1.1 Overview
There are two options for the Backup and Recovery Management in NetAct: The NetAct Disk
Based Solution and the Open Backup Solution.

1.1.1 NetAct Disk-based backup

With the disk-based backup solution it is possible to take both online and offline backups of
the file system and databases. The backup disk can be located on separate backup disk
storage or it can be a part of the online disk storage.
In the file system backup, the file system online and offline backups can be configured to be
stored on the backup disk for a longer or shorter time. System Administrator can do this by
defining the number of backups kept. In file system offline backups, the expired backups are
removed immediately after a new successful offline backup. In file system online backups,
the removal of expired backups is delayed and done just before a new online backup is
executed.
In the database backup, an online backup of the database can be taken while the database
is running. This is the usual way of taking a backup of the database. The disk based backup
application uses Oracle's Recovery Manager (RMAN) to perform database online backup
and restore operations. An offline backup of the database is taken when the database is not
running.

TIP
Offline backups are typically taken after the installation of the database or when
changes that require a shutdown have been made to the database or before an
upgrade to ensure that the system can be restored.

Disk-based backup only backs up the Oracle database and the global disks. Backup images
of all virtual machines are created using the vCenter Data Protection (VDP) component of
VMWare.
A virtual machine running the nfs service hosts the global filesystems /d/oss/global
and /home serving the NetAct8 infrastructure. A virtual machine running the nfs-
<vmhostname> service hosts the global filesystems /packages,
/etc/opt/nokia/oss, /var/opt/nokia/oss/global, /home, /d/repnb,
/d/corenb, and /d/mvi. that are part of the PM area of NetAct 8.

1.1.2 Open Backup Solution

With the open backup interface, network operators can build their own backup solution and it
also helps to use a backup system from a third-party vendor without using the backup
solution delivered by Nokia Solutions and Networks.
Open backup data volume
The volume of data to be backed up consists of two parts:

 Data on the file system

 Data in the Oracle database

The data in the file system includes the data on the root disks of all servers and on the high-
availability package disks in the SAN disk storage.
The data in the Oracle database includes network configuration and measurement data. The
amount of data depends on your parameters, for example, the size of the managed network
and the configuration of the system.

WARNING
The amount of data located in the file system and in the Oracle database depends on
the system configuration, installed features, and your parameters.

2.1 File Systems Backups

File system backup includes the backups of all files on the NetAct global file systems. File
system backup is done by taking a copy of the file system data to the backup location on the
virtual backup disk. The virtual backup disk then contains a copy of the directory structures of
the file systems to be backed up.
The virtual backup disk is located in a virtual backup storage. The virtual backup storage disk
can be located on separate physical backup disk storage or it can be a part of the physical
online disk storage.
In connection with the file system backup, both online and offline, backups of the directory
server are taken automatically. WebSphere Application Server (WAS) profile backup files
need to be created manually into the global disk. WAS profile backup files are copied to the
virtual backup disk during online and offline file system backup. For more information, see
Taking WebSphere Application Server backups.
For instructions on how to exclude files from the file system backup, see the section
Excluding files and directories from the file system backup.
For instructions and more information, see also backuptool.pl -help and
backuptool.pl -longhelp.
The file system backup in the disk-based backup solution can be configured to store the file
system online and offline backups on the backup disk for a longer or shorter time. System
administrator can do this by defining the number of backups kept. In file system offline
backup, the expired backups are removed immediately after a new successful offline backup.
In file system online backups, the removal of expired backups is delayed and done just
before a new online backup is executed.

2.2 Oracle disk-based backups

Disk-based Backup application uses Oracle's Recovery Manager (RMAN) to perform
database online backup and restore operations. For more information about RMAN, see
Oracle Database Backup and Recovery User's Guide. Oracle documentation index can be
found in http://www.oracle.com/technology/documentation/index.html.
An online backup of the database can be taken while the database is running. This is the
usual way to take a backup of the database
The Oracle online backup in the disk-based backup solution can be configured to use a
desired number of Recovery Manager (RMAN) channels. An RMAN channel represents one
stream of data to the backup disk. Each channel establishes a connection from the RMAN
client to a target database instance by starting a server session on the instance. The server
session then performs the actual backup.
For more information on RMAN and RMAN channels, see http://www.oracle.com.
The disk-based backup can also be configured to store the Oracle online and offline backups
on the backup disk for a longer or shorter time. This is done by defining the number of
backups kept. In an Oracle offline backup, the expired backups are removed immediately
after a new successful offline backup. In Oracle online backups, the removal of expired
backups is delayed and done just before a new online backup is executed. In addition, you
can define the maximum size of RMAN piece files in Oracle online backups.

2.3 Configuring disk-based backups

Prerequisites
The default configuration file for the disk-based backup is
/opt/cpf/install/template/butool.cf.template. This file must not be modified.

When you need to modify the disk-based backup configuration, edit a customized
configuration file /etc/opt/cpf/conf/butool.cf.
Before configuring the disk-based backup, check that the configuration file butool.cf.template
contains the following information:

backup_fs_keep: 7
backup_fs_keep_offline: 1
db_retention: 2
db_parallelism: 4
db_piecefile_maxsize: 2000M
db_offline_keep: 1

2.3.1 To modify the disk-based backup configuration

Since the customized configuration file resides in the local directory of the node, edit the
configuration file separately on virtual machines hosting the database, nfs, and PM
nfs-<vmhostname> services.
1. Locate or create a customized configuration file.

 If a customized configuration file exists, you can find it in:

/etc/opt/cpf/conf/butool.cf

 If the customized configuration file does not exist yet:

As a root user, create a copy of the default configuration file
/opt/cpf/install/template/butool.cf.template and save it into
/etc/opt/cpf/conf/butool.cf.
2. Edit the parameter values in the customized configuration file.

When configuring the database backups you can edit the following parameters:

Parameter Description

db_retention Defines how many online database backups

are kept on the backup disk

db_parallelism Defines how many Recovery Manager

(RMAN) channels are used in online
database backup

db_piecefile_maxsize Defines how large one backup file can be in

online database backup

db_offline_keep Defines how many offline database backups

are kept on the backup disk

db_incremental_mode Defines if incremental database backup

mode is on or off. This setting can be
overridden with command line options: -
incremental and -full

db_incremental_levels Defines the incremental backup level for

each weekday. The value of this parameter is
a list of seven numbers separated by
comma. First number is the level for Sunday,
second for Monday, third for Tuesday, etc.
Incremental level can be 0 or 1.

2.3.2 Excluding files and directories from the file system

backup
Prerequisites
By default, the file system backup contains all files in the system. You can exclude some files
and/or directories from the backup by using an exclusion configuration file.

WARNING
Excluding important files and directories from the file system backup can make the
backups useless. Be very careful when defining the files and directories in the
customized butexclude.cf file. Test the backup afterwards to verify that the
exclusion worked as intended.

WARNING
Some system services and applications may bring their own exclusion files into an
exclusion plug-in directory /etc/opt/cpf/backup.d/exclude/. Disk-based
backup always excludes files and directories listed in these files. Exclusion plug-in
files must not be edited.

Note: Since the customized configuration file resides in the local directory of the node, edit
the configuration file separately on virtual machines hosting the database, nfs, and the PM
nfs services.
1. Locate or create a customized exclusion file.

 If a customized exclusion file exists, it is located in

/etc/opt/cpf/conf/butexclude.cf

 If a customized exclusion file does not exist, create it in

/etc/opt/cpf/conf/butexclude.cf with any text editor available in the Linux
system.
2. Edit the values of the customized exclusion file on each of the virtual machines
mentioned before.
Each line in the file contains a file name matching pattern used to filter out file and
directory names from the list of files to be included in the backup. For example, to
exclude directory /tmp, the following line could be added to the butexclude.cf file:
/tmp/*
This effectively excludes all the files and directories in /tmp.
To exclude also all files and directories whose path start with /tmp, you can leave out
the slash and add the following line:
/tmp*
This would exclude also, for example, the file /tmpfile and directory /tmp2.

18
Administering Backups

To exclude also all files and directories that have /tmp/ in the full path, you can add an
asterisk to the beginning of the line and add the following line:
*/tmp/*
This would exclude also, for example, all files and directories in /var/tmp and
/usr/tmp.
3. Save the settings.
The next time the backup is executed the new settings are being used.

WARNING
You must edit the exclusion file parameters on each VM mentioned before.

2.4 Scheduling online Backups

It is recommended to schedule the taking of online backups into the off-peak hours so that
the load caused by this action does not interfere with the operation of the system.

To schedule online backups, execute the following procedure in the VM running the database
and the VM hosting the PM-nfs service.
1. Log in to the VM as the omc user.
2. Change into the root account using the su command.
3. To schedule a backup, run the following command:
[root]# /opt/cpf/bin/backuptool.pl -schedule [<hh:mm>]

For example:
[root]# /opt/cpf/bin/backuptool.pl -schedule 04:00
In the example above, backups of both the database and the file system are taken at the
scheduled time.

Examples of other commands for scheduling online backups:

 The following command schedules an automatic database backup:

[root]# /opt/cpf/bin/backuptool.pl -schedule <hh:mm> -backup db [-
incremental] [-level=<n>] [-full]]

 The following command schedules an automatic file system backup:

[root]# /opt/cpf/bin/backuptool.pl -schedule <hh:mm> -backup fs [-

3.1 Taking file system backups

3.1.1 Taking online backups of the file system
An online backup is taken when the system is up and running. Online backups are taken
automatically as scheduled in the cron.
Normally, the files that are included in the backup are updated incrementally, that is, only the
files and directories that have changed since the previous backup are updated to the backup
disk. Files and directories that have not changed are linked to the previous backup set.

To take an online backup of the whole file system: Execute the following procedure on the
VMs hosting the database service, the NFS service and the PM-NFS service.
1. Log in to the corresponding VM as the omc user.
2. Change into the root account using the su command.
3. To take an online backup of the whole file system, enter:
[root]# /opt/cpf/bin/backuptool.pl -backup fs

To take a forced full online backup: Execute the following procedure on the VMs hosting the
database service, the NFS service and the PM-NFS service
You can take a forced full file system backup instead of using the default incremental mode.
The full backup takes a backup of all files whether they have been modified or not.
4. Log in to the corresponding VM as the omc user.
5. Change into the root account using the su command.
6. To force a full backup, enter:
[root]# /opt/cpf/bin/backuptool.pl -backup fs -full

3.1.2 To take an offline backup of the file system

Execute the following procedure on the VMs hosting the database service, the NFS service
and the PM-NFS service
1. Log in to the VM. Logging in varies depending on whether you are allowed to log in to a
VM with the root account using the SSH protocol or not.
If the root user login with SSH is allowed:
a) Log in to the NFS VM as the root user.
If the root user login in SSH is not allowed, then do the following:
a) Connect to a vSphere Web client using the URL
https://<IP_address_of_VMware>:9443/vsphereclient/
b) Log in to the vSphere Web client as the root user.
c) In the main view, click VMs and templates in the Home tab.
d) To see the VMs, expand the list on the left pane.
e) Right-click the NFS VM, and then select Open Console.
f) If the console is blank, click the console, and then press Enter.
g) Login as the root user.
2. Shut down the following services: cron and Network Cache Daemon. To shut down,
enter the following on the database and NFS VMs separately:
[root]# service crond stop
[root]# service nscd stop
3. Shut down all NetAct services.
a) Log in to the virtual machine (VM) hosting the dirsvr service, and switch to the root
user.
b) To stop the services, enter the following command:
[root]# smanager.pl stop NetAct
Note:
◦When the VMs are restarted later, the services are also restarted automatically.
Some services may be unstoppable. This is expected, especially if the service had a
(u) when you checked its status.
c) If you plan to manually restart the services later, then enter:
[root]# smanager.pl maintenance all on

3.2.1 To restore a single file from the online backup
1. Log in to the database or NFS VM as the omc user.
2. Change into the root account using the su command.
3. To restore a single file on one VM, enter:
[root]# backuptool.pl -restore file \ <file to be restored> [-
backupset <set number>]
Where <file to be restored> is the absolute path to the original file and the name of the file
that is missing. The file is automatically retrieved from the backup.
4. Repeat steps 1 through 3 in all VMs running NFS and PM- nfs services

3.2.2 To restore a single directory from the online backup

1. Log in to the database or NFS VM as the omc user.
2. Change into the root account using the su command.
3. To restore a single directory on one VM, enter:

Restoring data from online backups

To restore data from online backups:

1. Log in to the database or NFS VM as the omc user.
2. Change into the root account using the su command.
3. To restore data on one VM, enter:
[root]# backuptool.pl -restore [file, directory, file system] \ <item to be
restored> [-backupset <set number>]
Where <item to be restored> is the absolute path to the original file or
directory or the name of file system to be restored.
The information is automatically retrieved from the backup.
4. Repeat steps 1 through 3 in all VMs running NFS and PM- nfs services

In the case of restoring File Systems, the backuptool.pl command does not
create or mount the file system. If the whole file system is missing, it must be
created and mounted before executing this command .

3.3 Taking directory service backups

Directory service backup files are created by daily cron jobs in the global disk. These
backups files are then copied to the backup disk in connection with the file system backups.
The directory service backup files are created using the following path names:
Latest directory service database backup:
/d/oss/global/var/dirsrv/backup/latest/oss_bak/
Latest directory service database backup in ldif format:
/d/oss/global/var/dirsvr/backup/latest/oss_bak.ldif
Latest directory service configuration backup:
/d/oss/global/var/dirsrv/backup/latest/oss_config.ldif
Directory service backup also keeps the 10 latest compressed backups in the disk ( <n> is a
number between range 1 to 10):

Directory service database backup:

/d/oss/global/var/dirsrv/backup/oss_bak.<n>.tgz

Directory service database backup in ldif format:

/d/oss/global/var/dirsrv/backup/oss_bak.<n>.ldif.tgz

Directory service configuration (database) backup

/d/oss/global/var/dirsrv/backup/oss_config.<n>.ldif

To manually execute a directory service backup, log in to the NetAct VM running the LDAP
service, switch to the root account, and enter the following command:
[root]# /opt/cpf/bin/cpfrhdsconf_create_and_rotate_backup.sh --
dir=/d/oss/global/var/dirsrv/backup/ --keep=10 --instance=oss

3.5 Taking WebSphere Application Server backups

WebSphere Application Server profile backups are not executed automatically. However,
after manual execution they will be automatically backed up in connection with the file system
backups, both online and offline file system backups.
In order to take manual backup of the WebSphere Application server profiles:
1. Log in to each WebSphere Application Server (WAS) VM as the omc user.
2. Change into the root account using the su command.
3. To take WebSphere profile backups, enter:
[root]# /opt/cpf/bin/cpfwas_backup_profiles.sh
Note:
Running the script activates the backup process. During the backup process, the script will
stop all the WAS services, take a backup of the WAS profiles, and then restart all the WAS
services.
Profile specific backup zip files are available at
/d/oss/global/var/cpfwas/backup/<profilename>_BU.zip ..

Server Profiles. Profiles can be thought of as a specific server runtime

environment operating within a separate instance of the Java Virtual
Machine .
Each runtime environment has its own configuration files, logs, properties,
and other attributes. Profiles can make each Java 2 Enterprise Edition
(J2EE) application server runtime unique and separate from the server
binaries and from other profiles

3.6 Taking Database backups

3.6.1 Taking Online backups of the database
An online backup of the database can be taken while the database is running. This is the
usual way to take a backup of the database.
Disk-based Backup application uses Oracle's Recovery Manager (RMAN) to perform
database online backup and restore operations.

To take a full online backup of the database

1. Log in to the the VM where the database is running as the omc user.
2. Change into the root account using the su command.
To take a full online backup, enter:
[root]# /opt/cpf/bin/backuptool.pl -backup db

To take an incremental online backup

In the incremental backup you take a backup of those files only that have changed since the
previous backup.
You can enable fast incremental backups by enabling block change tracking in Oracle. This
makes incremental backups more useful.
1. Log in to the the VM where the database is running as the omc user.
2. Change into the root account using the su command.
3. If block change tracking is on, you can skip this step. If it is not on, to enable block
change tracking, enter:
[root]# /opt/cpf/bin/backuptool.pl -bct on
4. To take an incremental online backup, enter:
[root]# /opt/cpf/bin/backuptool.pl -backup db -incremental
You can override the default RMAN incremental level settings by using the command
options [-level=0] or [-level=1].
For more information about RMAN incremental levels, see Oracle Database Backup and
Recovery User's Guide, chapter RMAN Backup Concepts. Oracle documentation index can
be found in

3.6.2 Taking Offline backups of the database

Prerequisites
Before taking an offline backup of the database you must shut down the database. An offline
backup of the database is usually taken after the installation of the database and when
changes that require shutdown have been made to the database. Offline backups are also
typically taken before an upgrade to ensure that the system can be restored.
1. Log in to the VM where the database is running. Logging in varies depending on whether
you are allowed to log in to a server with the root account using the SSH protocol, or
not.

 If the root user login with SSH is allowed:

Log in to a server as the root user.

 If the root user login with SSH is not allowed:

a) Connect to a vSphere Web client using the URL
https://<IP_address_of_VMware>:9443/vsphereclient/.
b) Log in to the vSphere Web client b. as the root user.
c) In the main view, select VMs and templates in the Home tab
d) Right-click the database VM, and then select Open Console.
e) If the console is blank, click the console, and then press Enter. Log in as the root
user.
2. To take an offline backup of the database, enter:
[root]# /opt/cpf/bin/backuptool.pl -backup db offline
3. Start the database.

4.1 Overview
vSphere Data Protection (VDP) is the tool used in NetAct to execute the backup on the
virtual machine level. VDP is designed for the vSphere platform and deployed as a virtual
appliance. Using vSphere Data Protection (VDP), you can specify which virtual machines
(VM) to backup, how often backups are done, and how long backups are stored. Using the
Virtual Machine Restore, you can specify which virtual machines to restore, how they are
restored, and where they are restored.
It is recommended to schedule daily VDP backup jobs to take backups of all NetAct VMs and
vCenter server VM..

WARNING
VDP’s File Level Recovery is not supported in NetAct. You can only restore whole virtual
machines from the backup image.
Additionally, when a backup job is performed, the VDP virtual machine CPU utilization
becomes very high and may generate an alarm. This alarm is automatically cleared when the
backup job is completed and the CPU utilization goes down.
For more information on using VDP to take and restore backups of virtual machines, see the
vSphere Data Protection Administration Guide. VMware vSphere documentation can be
found in http://www.vmware.com/support/pubs/vdr_pubs.ht.

1. Connect to a vSphere Web client using the URL
https://<IP_address_of_VMware>:9443/vsphereclient/
2. Log in to the vSphere Web client as the root user.
3. From the Navigator pane, select vSphere Data Protection.
4. From the vSphere Data Protection welcome page, click the VDP appliance menu, and
then select vSphere Data Protection.
5. Click Connect.
6. Select the Backup tab, and then click Backup Job Actions → New.
The Backup Job Wizard appears.
7. From the Virtual Machines tab, expand the inventory tree until all the objects and virtual
machines appear.
8. Select the virtual machine (VM) you want to back up, and then click Next.
9. Select your preferred schedule settings for the backup job, and then click Next.

Aside from scheduling online backups during off-peak hours, it is recommended that
you schedule three VDP backup jobs: one for the virtual machines running
Performance Management (PM) services, one for the rest of the NetAct virtual
machines, and one for the vCenter server VM. To know which VMs are running PM
services, log in to any NetAct VM, switch to the root account, and then enter the
command:

10. Select your preferred retention settings for the backup job, and then click Next.
11. In the Name field, enter a name for the backup job, and then click Next.
12. Review your settings, and then click Finish to create the backup job. Otherwise, click
Back to modify your settings.
Expected outcome
The new backup job is created successfully
