Specific Purpose: To inform my audience that bad breath is one of the regular medical
conditions that happen to millions of people.

Central Ideas: Bad breath is simply related to bacteria in the mouth, as well as lifestyle
and personal hygiene issues.

INTRODUCTION

I. Imagine these parting words from your ex-boyfriend, “And by the way, your
breath smells” if the break-up was not depressing enough, realizing you have
bad breath will certainly have you down in the dumps.
II. Surprisingly, many who suffer from bad breath or halitosis are unaware that they
have this condition.
III. And those who do, however, do not know how to treat it.
IV. Even professionals who suffer from this condition do not realize that they have
bad breath.
V. The woman who was told that she has bad breath by the ex-boyfriend is actually
a dentist.
VI. Today I would like to inform you about the symptoms of bad breath, the cause
that affect many people and the options for treatment that available.

(Transition: Let’s start with the symptoms of bad breath.)

BODY

I. There are several symptoms to show that the person has a bad breath or
Halitosis disease.

A. It is obvious that as we speak, people tend to react by recoiling.

1. This is accustomed to the constant flow of bad breath from our

mouth.

B. Other associated symptom indicate that person has bad breath is from
the infection in the mouth.

1. These infections include, that gum may be red and swollen.

2. It is also easily bleed especially after brushing and flossing, since
wrong brushing and flossing technique that lead to gum bleeding.
C. Addition to that, having a dry mouth also one of the symptoms that show
one has bad breath.

1. If one have a dry mouth it would be difficult for them to swallow

dry foods.
2. In fact, it would be hard for them to speak as the consequences of
mouth dryness.

(Transition: Now you know something about the symptoms of bad breath, let’s look at
what would have cause them.)

II. Bad breath or Halitosis is caused by odor-producing bacteria that grow in the
mouth.

A. According to Dr. Geoffrey Speiser, bad breath, or halitosis, can be a

major problem, especially when you’re about to snuggle with your sweetie
or whisper a joke to your friend.
B. Technically, there are three common causes of bad breath.

1. Certain foods, especially ones like garlic and onions that contain
pungent oils, can contribute to bad breath because the oils are
carried to your lungs and out through your mouth.
2. Poor oral hygiene leads to bad breath because when you leave
food particles in your mouth, these pieces of food can rot and start
to smell.
3. The use of tobacco products can cause bad breath where
smoking is also a major cause of bad breath.

C. There are a few other underlying causes that lead to bad breath

1. Gum disease is also known as periodontal disease

2. Sometimes sinus problem, rarely liver or kidney problem can
cause bad breath too.
3. As you get older, your saliva flow starts to slow.
4. Saliva is the mouth’s natural defense mechanism against bacteria
and if you continue to have a dry mouth, you will have chronic bad
breath.

(Transition: Given the general causes of bad breath that affect people, I’m sure you are
wondering how they can be treated.)
III. Bad breath can be treated by that available treatment for those suffering from
Halitosis and some simple prevention steps.

A. Dr Speiser, who runs a breath clinic in Sydney, Australia, says there is a

machine that is able to detect the different smells.

1. The doctor will be able to gauge the strength of the smell,

determine its causes and find out where in the mouth the bacteria
exist.

B. Don't smoke or use tobacco products.

1. Do take care of your mouth by brushing your teeth at least twice a

day and flossing once a day.
2. Brush your tongue, too, because bacteria can grow there.
3. Flossing once a day helps get rid of particles wedged between
your teeth.
4. Also, visit your dentist twice a year for regular checkups and
cleanings.

C. In order to prevent bad breath, we need to reduce the intake of protein in

every day’s meals.

1. If we clean the protein from the tongue and the gum, teeth and
back of the throat, then obviously we remove a lot of food source
and bacteria that cause the smell.

CONCLUSION

I. It is important for us to know what the symptoms of bad breath, so the

disease can be prevented.
II. Those underlying causes might inherit from other disease that they might
not know. Identifying the cause also help those suffer from halitosis
disease to seek for treatment that available and ensure that related
disease not get worsen.
III. If you are concerned about bad breath, go and see your doctor and
dentist. A dentist and Halitosis expert can help figure out any potential
problem that can cause the bad breath.
IV. So do not take things for granted, it is their job as professional to help
people to prevent and become aware of their medical condition. Thus,
let’s do yours.
