It’s been an eventful 100 years and has seen New York rise to become one of the most
influential cities of the twenty-first century. Read on to find out more.

Level

How to use the lesson

1. You may want to find out from your students how many of them have been to New
York and what their impressions were of the city.

2. Tell your students you are going to ask them to read a text and then answer some
questions about the text. Give each student in the class a copy of the worksheet and ask
them to fold along the line indicated and place on the table so that only the top half is
showing. Then give them four minutes to read it and remember as many facts as they can.

3. When they have finished reading, ask your students to work together (in pairs or small
groups) to answer the questions on the bottom half of the worksheet. Encourage them to
try to answer as many as possible from memory.

4. Check answers in open class.
