b) write the fractions; and
Learning c) compare the unit fractions for halves, thirds, fourths, sixths, eighths, and
tenths.
Students will be able to…
● Explain and know the difference between halves, thirds, fourths, sixths,
Objectives eighths, and tenths.

I will review my knowledge of fractions and know the difference between all
Learning Target fractions.

● Students will be completing the Read and Color the Fraction worksheet
to refresh their knowledge of fractions
○ One of the fractions is Twelfths the students have not learned it
Introduction/ yet but this would be a good pre assessment to see if they can

1. Students will complete the Read and Color the Fraction Worksheet
2. Students will work on Fun Fractions with…
a. Students will work by themselves
b. Each student will receive a napkin with M&M’s
c. After getting their worksheet checked the students may eat the
Instructional M&M’s
Activities 3. Students will then complete the exit ticket
a. What are fractions and where can they use it in everyday life?
i. Students can either draw or they can write
Accommodations No accommodations for this lesson.
Exit Ticket: Kids will explain how fractions can be used in their everyday life. Commented [2]: And you also did a little post-
Closure Activity discussion on the carpet, right? That was a cool way to
end!
None needed for this Lesson. Teacher will be assessing fractions next class.

Reflection on a Lesson Plan Taught

Intern Name: Katie Rybolt
Topic/Subject of Lesson: Fractions
Grade: 2nd Grade
Date of Lesson Taught: May 10, 2018
Cooperating Teacher: Ms.Hunt
Cooperating School: Woodstock Elementary School
Time of Day: Morning

1. What steps did you go through to create this lesson? With whom did you talk, discuss, or edit your
lesson?
I have asked several VTFT students as well as one of my teachers here at THS to help make changes to
the worksheets I created. I also shared it with my cooperating teacher to get her take on what I should change
for the students to understand my lesson better.

2. How did the SOLs and Objectives help focus your instruction?
The SOL requirements have helped me understand what exactly about fractions they need to learn and
know by the end of this year/unit.

3. What parts of the instructional plan worked as you anticipated?

The read and color the fraction worksheet went over like it was planned, the students moved through
the worksheet very fast which was expected. Also the m&m worksheet really intrigued the students and they
loved the assignment.

4. What, if any, adjustments needed to be made once you began?

I should have changed how I approached the lesson, for example I should have explained it more clearer
so the students could have had a better understanding of the worksheet I made.

5. How well did you anticipate the materials needed?

I sorted all of the materials such as printing all three worksheets, pre sorting the m&m’s for the
students, as well as pre cutting them.
6. How effective was the assessment you chose to use? (If no assessment was used, what will the future
assessment be and how will you gauge its effectiveness?)
I did not do an assessment due to the fact my cooperating teacher was going to test them on fractions the
day after I teach them this review. If I were to have done an assessment I would have created a quiz to be able
to gauge what I taught them actually made sense and they were able to understand what fractions really are. Commented [4]: This is true, but technically you did
7. To what degree do you feel that this lesson was a success? What evidence do you have for the success of assess, just informally! Anytime you as the teacher try
to gauge what students have learned so far, it's
the lesson? (Hint: Student learning is the key to a lesson’s success!) assessment! So looking at their papers is an
I feel as though it was a success when I attended lunch with the students and asked how they liked it informal/ungraded assessment, as well as talking with
and if they understood it. They all agreed and also by the students filling out the exit ticket shows how they students about what they learned. :)
understand the use of fractions. I looked over all of the exit tickets and all of the students understood the
material.

8. How did the time spent preparing for your lesson contribute to its success?
I spent two full days working on my lesson plans and it really prepared me for what life would be like
in the future. My work contributed to my success by allowing me to make adjustments majorly.

9. If you could do this lesson again with the same students, would you do anything differently? If so, what?
I would show them a model, they were having a hard time visualizing my directions I gave them.

10. Any last comments/reflections about your lesson?

I was more worried about the execution of the lesson but lessons aren’t that bad to plan or teach. The
lessons go faster when you do it than when you plan it.
