Mount Rainier
Without question, Mount Rainier is the single most
recognizable landmark in the Pacific Northwest. It attracts
more than two million visitors each year. It’s been viewed
through camera lenses by more visitors to the area than any
other single site or event. At 14,410 feet at the Columbia Crest
summit, Mount Rainier is the 10th tallest peak in the nation,
the fifth tallest outside of the state of Alaska. The mountain
is a volcano believed to have been dormant for hundreds of
years. There are 25 named glaciers and numerous smaller,
unnamed glaciers on Rainier. It has the greatest single-peak
glacial system in the United States.
About 58 percent of the Mount Rainier National Park
is covered by forests with trees that can range from young
growth, less than 100 years old, to old-growth which is 1,000
years old or more. For the plant lovers, the park holds some
heather communities that have endured for up to 10,000 years.

species from the Columbian Black-tailed deer, to mountain Park. The 93-mile Wonderland Trail encircles the mountain

Skamania features dramatic geography

By Philip L. Watness
DeVaul Publishing
Skamania County visitors may only see mountains and rivers
but they can learn about the dramatic geography and history of
the Columbia River Gorge, Mount St. Helens and the Gifford
Pinchot National Forest as they traverse the ancient landscape.
Museums, roadside plaques and online resources can apprise
them of the region’s marvels. They will learn that the Columbia
River is the only one in the world which cuts through a major
mountain range. That’s because the river predates the Cascades
Mountains.
They can also learn about the Bridge of the Gods, a mythical
land bridge that was said to straddle the Columbia River near the
site of the Depression-era bridge of the same name. Geologists
have debunked the story of a land bridge and visitors can still
see evidence of the massive landslide that once blocked the
river near Cascade Locks. Greenleaf Peak and Table Mountain
loom over Stevenson, their sheer rock faces showing where the
Bonneville landslide carved off the rock and mud that blocked
the river. Geologists have found that the debris covered more

a forest of trees for about 35 miles.
Visitors may also enjoy learning the Native American lore in north Skamania County, Mount Adams in Klickitat County,
about the creation of the Bridge of the Gods, Mount St. Helens and Mount Hood in Oregon State.
Tourists who visit the Columbia Gorge Interpretive Center
Museum in Stevenson or the Cascade Locks Museum across the
river will learn not only about the Native American legends but
also about the history of the white settlers who followed in the
footsteps of the Corps of Discovery, also known as the Lewis
and Clark Expedition.
The diaries from the expedition relate that the explorers
could hear the cascades from miles away. When they finally
reached the three-tiered falls, they had to portage their boats
around them because they were too dangerous to run.
The deafening roar of the cascades in the heart of the
Columbia River Gorge has long since been silenced by the pool
formed behind the nearby Bonneville Dam. Before the dam was
built in the 1938, though, a series of locks was built at Cascade
Locks. Visitors can visit the narrow passage and imagine the
huge gates used to control the flow of water through the locks.
Three historic buildings, including the Cascade Locks Museum,
are aligned with the three locks used until the dam made them
obsolete.
The Cascades rapids blocked sternwheelers and steamboats
from going upriver or down before the locks was constructed.
A few brave captains ran the cascades with only a handful
surviving the 40-foot drop over the two miles. Boat travelers
were forced to either portage boats and supplies or pull boats
up with ropes.
The Oregon Pony steam locomotive was the first railroad
engine used to carry supplies around the cascades. The small
gauge locomotive is housed in a building adjacent to the locks
and the museum in Cascade Locks.

Emulate tightrope walkers at Skamania

Lodge’s new aerial park
By Philip L. Watness
DeVaul Publishing
Skamania Lodge offers people the chance to practice their
funambulism skills – if they have the courage to walk on a
tightrope wire 20 feet above the ground.
They might also discover a propensity for acrophobia,
though, as they try to navigate the perplexing array of obstacles
of the new aerial park at the lodge.
Tightrope walking (funambulism) and fear of heights
(acrophobia) both come into play for anyone who ponies up
$69 for two hours of sheer terror (for some) and thrills (for
others).
Park-users foray up into the canopy of trees where they can
follow several routes across tightropes and around obstacles.
In one direction, they will step onto a tightrope and grab wood
frames hanging loose along the stretch of wire. In another
path, they will walk across a canoe strung between trees.
Another direction presents the challenge of walking across
wobbly planks while holding an overhead wire for balance.
The aerial park has 19 platforms connecting 22 elements Photo by Philip L. Watness / DeVaul Publishing
with varying degrees of difficulty. From the start-off platform, The Aerial Park presents numerous physical challenges
three loops of challenging elements confront users. Designed like the eight vertical logs with footholds and handholds
by Shayne Large, owner and designer of the Skamania Lodge which people navigate to cross the abyss.
Zip Line Tour, the park allows users to scramble or amble at
their own pace.
Unlike the tightrope-walking Flying Wallendas, though,
participants are hooked to anchor safety cables throughout
the adventure. At the start of the adventure, users connect to
a cable from which they cannot unhook more than one end at
a time until they’re back on solid ground.
The knowledge that falling to the ground is impossible
soon overcomes the natural fear of heights. That doesn’t
mean the heart stops racing, the blood stops rushing and
the fear evaporates – but that just makes the experience that
much more exciting.
For those who overcome the fear of heights, they can
climb a wooden ladder to the “Eagle’s Nest” for an expansive
view of the Columbia River Gorge over the roof of Skamania
Lodge. It’s not a climb for the faint of heart, though, as the
extra height causes more heart-pounding.
People who clamber along the tightropes and obstacles
tend to hug the trees which anchor the course when they
make it across one of the elements.
Unlike the zipline tour, which has individuals flying
downhill in groups, users of the aerial park move at their own
pace and choose their own path. As many as 20 people can
traverse the elements at a time – any more bodies aloft would
strain the ability of the course.
Users gear up with hardhats, safety harnesses and hooks.
They practice clipping on and off the safety wires as well as
intentionally falling from a wire strung only a few feet above
ground to gain confidence that the safety gear will keep them

out of harm’s way.
Park Monitor Jonathan Johnson familiarizes users with
the safety system after checking they’ve suited up properly,
then leads groups up a flight of steps to the first platform from
which people can choose one of the three routes.
“I’ll have you walk through this ground school, and we’ll
make sure everyone feels comfortable,” he said to a group of
a dozen journalists trying out the aerial park on Wednesday,
Sept. 20. “With it being wet out today, it’s going to be slick.
There’s a risk involved in this. If you slip, it happens. You
might bang your shoe a little bit but you’re not going all the
way to ground.”
