Anne Hathaway speech

1. Anne Hathaway’s main idea in this speech is to create equal pay for both men and
women on paternity leave who recently just had a new born child.
2. I can make the connection that a cousin of mine had this same struggle where she had to
work and take care of her child because she wasn’t getting paid on paternity leave.
3. The author’s purpose is to persuade the UN Nations to create and give equal pay for men
and women on paternity leave.
4. The audience is members of United Nations and other politicians. I know because she
spoke to the United Nations members and politicians. The intended audience affects the
text because it puts more importance to it.
5. The most relevant arguments that the author uses is that women get 12 weeks’ unpaid
leave after giving birth and men get nothing forcing both parents to go to work to be
stable in those 12 weeks.
6. Pathos is the most prevalent in this text.
a. “American women are currently entitled to 12 weeks’ unpaid leave. American men are entitled
to nothing. That information landed differently for me when, one week after my son’s birth I
could barely walk, [...] when I was dependent on my husband for most things, when we were
relearning everything we thought we knew about our family and relationship. It landed
differently.” (Hathaway).

b. “In my own household, my mother had to choose between a career and raising three children- a
choice that left her unpaid and underappreciated as a homemaker- because there just wasn’t
support for both paths.” (Hathaway).

7. A possible theme of this text is that women should be able to get paid for when pregnancy happens or
anything else

8. It helped me understand how women who have jobs feel about unpaid leave when they have a good
reason to not be able to work

9. I don’t think i would change anything from this text, everything is well written

10. I think that women should be able to get paid on paternity leave as well as men. Since women and
men don’t get paid on paternity leave, women are forced to go to work 2 weeks after just have giving
birth. “American women are currently entitled to 12 weeks’ unpaid leave. American men are entitled to
nothing. That information landed differently for me when, one week after my son’s birth I could barely
walk, [...] when I was dependent on my husband for most things, when we were relearning everything
we thought we knew about our family and relationship. It landed differently.” (Hathaway). This quote
shows that since she gave birth to her child she was dependant on her husband to get everything they
needed to be stable for those 12 weeks because they were unpaid on paternity leave. Because of unpaid
paternity leave the man has to go to work and work more to get the family stable.
