Builds Upon & Advances Ongoing Environmental Efforts

•page 1
SLATE BELT HEAT RECOVERY CENTER
• Fully permitted facility
• Exceeds environmental standards by using state-of-the-art technology
• “Good-neighbor” design elements including process air- and water-quality control
features
• Slate Belt Heat Recovery Center will use the waste heat from GKEDC’s Energy
Center to create:
– Temporary and permanent local jobs and;
– A manufactured product that will be sold as a renewable fuel for cement kilns,
as a component in blended fertilizers, and as a fertilizer marketed under the
Granulite brand.
®

• Grand Central Sanitary Landfill has been serving communities and protecting the
environment by providing solid waste disposal services for more than 60 years.
SLATE BELT HEAT RECOVERY CENTER COMMUNITY BENEFITS
JOBS IN THE COMMUNITY
• Construction will generate 40 jobs over 18-month period.
• Center operation creates approximately 16 permanent and family-sustaining full-time jobs.
• Permanent jobs in the community have a multiplier effect.
– Creating other supporting sustainable jobs and business opportunities within the local area
– Supporting the tax base and continued economic growth in the region

ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT
• Synagro will utilize waste heat from Green Knights Energy Center.
– This will create a new and steady source of income for the non-profit which exists solely to
support economic development in the area
• Sale of the waste heat allows the Green Knights to increase their investments in projects and
programs that build the local economy.
• Green Knight Economic Development Corporation’s success stories include:
– Attracting Techo-Bloc to Pen Argyl;
– Supporting the construction of the local YMCA
– Providing environmental grants and scholarships to the school district; and
– Reinvestment in the Green Knight power generating station.
SLATE BELT HEAT RECOVERY CENTER ODOR CONTROL

Odor control is inherent in the Center’s design

SYNAGRO AND WM UNDERSTAND THAT CREATING NUISANCE

CONDITIONS IN THE COMMUNITY IS NOT ACCEPTABLE

ODOR CONTROL
• Approved inbound source material transport will be covered and
in water-tight trailers.
• All of the Center process equipment is enclosed and will be
under negative air pressure to draw and convey the potentially
odorous air to be treated by a two-stage wet odor control
system before being released.

FOR MORE INFORMATION ON BIOSOLIDS USE

• Biosolids use has been intensely studied for more than 40 years by
many independent research institutions, including the U.S.
Environmental Protection Agency, the U.S. Department of Agriculture
and the National Academy of Sciences.
• The overwhelming body of scientific research has proven that
biosolids recycling and use is a safe and beneficial practice.

ODOR CONTROL SYSTEM
• A wet scrubber uses water, in two
similar stages, as a media to transfer
the odors from the air stream into
the liquid.
• The air stream is forced to take a
random path through inert media to
increase contact opportunity and
effectiveness.
• Fresh water is added to replace used
water that is drained from the system
to maintain the ability to absorb the
odors.
• The removal efficiency of the odor https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kfyWD_7-42s
stages is increased by tuning in the
water pH to control the acid/alkaline
reactions.
• For more information about how a
wet scrubber removes odorous
constituents, view this video from
Convergence Training.
