Germany announces the renewal of
unrestricted submarine warfare in the
Atlantic as German torpedo-armed
submarines prepare to attack any and
all ships, including civilian passenger
carriers, said to be sighted in war-
zone waters.
Convoys
driven by the spectacular
success of the German U-
boat submarines and their
attacks on Allied and neu-
tral ships at sea, the British
Royal Navy introduces a
newly created convoy sys-
tem, whereby all merchant
ships crossing the Atlantic
Ocean would travel in
groups under the protection
of the British navy.
Poison gas
On April 22, 1915, German
forces shock Allied soldiers
along the western front by
firing more than 150 tons of
lethal chlorine gas against two
French colonial divisions at
Ypres, Belgium. This was the
first major gas attack by the
Zeppelins
On the afternoon of
Sunday 1 October
1916, eleven
Zeppelins took off
from their North
German bases on a
bombing raid against
