The MG 2018 Gettysburg Address
Two score and sixteen years ago our mother country’s automotive
designers brought forth to this continent a new sports car, conceived in Liberty,
and dedicated to the proposition that all mankind should be able to own a roadster.
Now we are engaged in a great war of longevity, testing whether that car, or any
car so conceived and dedicated, can long endure. We are met on a great battle-field
of a previous war. We have come to dedicate a portion of our time to honor those
who dedicated their lives to producing that car, so that their dreams might live. It is
altogether fitting and proper that we should do this.
But, in a larger sense, we can not dedicate – we can not consecrate — we can not
hallow — this sports car. The brave men, living and dead, who struggled to design,
produce, and maintain this car have constructed it, far above our poor power to add or
detract. The world will little note, nor long remember what we say here, but it can
never forget what they did in Abingdon. It is for us the living, rather, to be dedicated
here to the unfinished work which they who labored there have thus far so nobly
advanced. It is rather for us to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before us
— that from those dedicated MG designers and builders we take increased devotion to
that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion — that we here highly
resolve that these men shall not have worked in vain — that this sports car, under
God, shall have a new birth of freedom — and that this sports car of the people,
by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.

WELCOME!
This booklet has everything you need to know, or tells you where to go for more.
Please look through it early to see what events we have planned, where to go for them, when they happen
and how to get into them. Early registrants received some local tourism brochures in the mail — if you’ve left
that packet at home or are a late registrant, additional copies are available at the registration table.
The digital version of this program includes hyperlinks to locations, maps and websites.
Security
We recommend you lock your vehicles when you are not with them, and to keep any valuables in your
room. This area does not have a crime problem, but a parking lot full of convertibles next to a busy
highway may look inviting.
Emergency Services
WellSpan Gettysburg Hospital — 147 Gettys St., Gettysburg, 717-334-2121. Turn left out of the hotel
complex, follow U.S. 30 W (York Street) past the center of town, turn left at Washington Street, and look
for hospital signs.
WellSpan Urgent Care walk-in clinic — 455 S Washington St., on the hospital campus. 717-339-2875.
8 am-8 pm every day. Go here for minor illnesses and conditions (minor cuts and burns, sunburn,
sprains, strains, etc.), not for anything requiring emergency services.
Wyndham Gettysburg – 717-339-0200 – 95 Presidential Circle, Gettysburg.
Courtyard Marriott Gettysburg – 717-334-5600 – 115 Presidential Circle, Gettysburg
Local Services
Gettysburg’s commercial strip is just down the road from Gateway Gettysburg — Turn left out of the
complex on Route 30 (York Road.) You’ll find an assortment of restaurants, gas stations, pharmacies, a
24-hour Sheetz convenience store and 24-hour Walmart, food, beer and liquor stores, auto parts stores,
and a U-Haul franchise. See the overview map on Pages 20-21.

TUESDAY 9 am – 1pm
TSD RALLYE SCHOOL
Salon B
ERIC SALMINEN
& DENNIS BLEVINS,
members of both the MGs of
Baltimore Ltd. (MGOB) club and
the LANCO MG Club in Lancaster
County, Pa., began rallying together
in 2001. Campaigning in Eric’s MGB,
they initially participated in events
organized by a group based in the
Washington, D.C., area and other
local events that they could find.
Wanting to be more competitive, they joined the Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) and began travel-
ling to SCCA sanctioned rallies held in Maryland, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, Connecticut and
beyond.
By 2004, through the experience that they gained, they won the “stock” class rally championship for
the Northeastern Division of SCCA. That year they also they took over organizing and handling all the
details of running MGOB’s annual “Get the Dust Off” rally.
In 2008, fellow rallyist and MGOB member Len Picton organized a group to hold a rally school so that
others could avoid the trial-and-error method of learning by experience that Eric and Dennis faced
during their introduction to the sport. That day-long school has been held seven times since, and Den-
nis and Eric have been “professor” and rally master, respectively, of it since 2015. They continue to rally
together, but most often using Eric’s Subaru WRX Sti rather than the MGB.
Those planning to run the MG2018 Time Speed Distance Rallye on Wednesday are encouraged to
attend the Rallye School session on Tuesday. Among the topics to be covered are the various presenta-
tions of route instructions, odometer calibration checks, maintaining an average speed, Monte Carlo
rallies, how to use clocks and instruments, how to win, self-scoring, and improving your skills. If time
permits, they may run a mini-rally in conjunction with the school, complete with checkpoints, and hold
a debriefing session afterward.
TUESDAY 9 am-Noon
MGC POLY BUSHING
& FRONT SUSPENSION REBUILD
Salon A
ALAN VINEGAR is a doctor of dental surgery and other things
mechanical. By day he fixes teeth, by night he works on his 1969
MGC-GT, a car he has owned since 2013. His previous car was a 1974
MGB-GT.
Alan will discuss how to disassemble, refurbish and rebuild an MGC
front suspension. He will also cover how to install poly bushings and
reset the trim height on your car
He is the MGC coordinator for the MG Car Club of Toronto, and he
and his wife, Barbara, enjoy taking their car for long summer drives
and visiting their grandchildren in Buffalo and Cleveland.
13
TUESDAY 1–2:30 pm
DOT 5 CONVERSION
& HYDRAULIC CYLINDER REBUILDING
Salon A
CHRIS HORANT will lead a session on DOT 5 brake fluid
conversion and hydraulic cylinder rebuilding. He will discuss DOT
3 and DOT 5 brake fluids and why don’t they don’t play well
together, and outline the advantages of each. He will also present
brake cylinder reconditioning methods and procedures, bleeding
techniques, and DOT 5 conversion “do’s and don’ts” for a successful
system overhaul.
Chris has worked four years as a line tech at Volkswagen, qualifying
as a master registered technician. He worked for 32 years as a fleet
maintenance tech at the U.S. Postal System, and 17 years working on
vintage British cars in private. He owns three little British cars right now: a 1969 Triumph Spitfire, a 1971
Triumph GT6, and a 1967 Morris Mini. He had to sell his first LBC, a 1975 Midget, shortly after purchase
because it was not the right size for a larger guy.
WEDNESDAY 9–10:30 am
TUNING & SET UP
OF SU CARBURETORS
Salon B
RANDY KEGG will discuss the tuning and set up of SU carburetors.
His presentation will include linkage adjustment, synchronization
of multiple carburetors, mixture adjustment, examining carbs for
wear and potential overhaul, variations among different models of
carburetors, plus other tips and techniques.
Randy’s first career was working for various shops and Volkswagen
dealers in the Baltimore area as a mechanic. After several years
of fixing cars and attending school, he began a second career in
information technology.
Now retired, he spends his time working on his own cars, mostly
MGs and VWs, and serving as the technical adviseor for the MGs of
Baltimore club.
WEDNESDAY 9–10:30 am
PAINT RESTORATION & DETAILING TIPS
Side Portico
STEVE WILLIAMS, MGs of Baltimore’s own master of sparkle, will
show you how to take that old, dull, weather-beaten paint and make it
shine like new. He is a three -time best-of-show winner, and shine and
detail are his passion.
Steve will demonstrate wet sanding and buffing, and will help
eliminate your fear of putting sandpaper on paint. He will also cover
the basic products and tools you need (and don’t need) to get your
LBC looking great and ready to go to a show.
14
WEDNESDAY 1–3 pm
POST ABINGDON TALKING TOUR
Side Portico
JOHN STEVENSON will deliver a brief history of the evolution of
the MG brand since 1980, when the last MG was imported to North
America, to 2005, when British ownership of the brand ended.
On site will be an MGF and an RV8, which will be used to explain
the development of these cars and the specifications and options of
each. Maintenance, availability of parts and cost of ownership will
be discussed for each model, and a question and answer period will
follow.
John is a member of the MG Car Club of Toronto and the Montréal
MG Car Club. He bought his first MG at the age of 14, a 1967 MGB
roadster that he and his dad restored by the time he was 17.
John has been collecting and restoring MGs ever since, from a 1952 MG TD to a 2005 MG SV. His
interest in modern MGs started in 1993, when he saw a brand new RV8 at the Scottish Motor show in
Glasgow.
In 2013, John imported his first RV8 from Japan. Along with various MGFs and RV8s, he owns a 1985
MG Montego Turbo, 1985 MG Metro Turbo and a 2001 MG ZT saloon.
As one of the founding members of the Canadian Modern MG Rover Car Club, John has a keen interest
in all MGs built before and especially after 1980.
WEDNESDAY 1–2:30 pm
WHY DID THEY DO THAT?
Salon B
KELVIN DODD is “the face of Moss Motors” to many enthusiasts
around the country. As the global sourcing product coordinator at
Moss, he is responsible for the technical aspects of parts fitment and
sourcing for the company.
In his illustrated and irreverent “Why Did They Do That?” discussion,
Kelvin will answer that question on many MG issues you may have.
Ever wonder why your MG requires a wide variety of wrenches? Or
why you can’t get exact replacements for your mid 1970s switches?
Come to Kelvin’s session for a fun and fascinating look at the British
parts market and the manufacturing forces that affected our cars.
Born in Wolverhampton, England, Kelvin moved to Denver, Colo., in 1973 and graduated from the
University of Colorado Boulder in 1980 with a bachelor of science in mechanical engineering.
In 1992 he moved to California and joined the wholesale sales team at Moss Motors, where he
previously worked as assistant wholesale manager and British marketing manager. He is a member of
the British Motor Trade Association, and serves that organization as secretary.

ROCKER COVER RACES
Parking Lot behind Wyndham Conference Center
Come watch the action as owners put their racers to the test.
Here are the Official Rules of NAMGBR Rocker Cover Racing.
THE COURSE
n The course shall consist of a launch incline eight feet long, followed by a level run of 20
feet
n The launch incline shall be divided into two lanes, each 18-24 inches wide. The incline
shall be two feet high at the rearmost part and level with the course at the front edge.
n The front edge shall be mitered so as to provide a smooth transition from the incline to
the run out area.
n The official “Starting Line” shall be two feet from the rear edge of the incline. A
mechanized starting gate may be provided.
n The run -out section of the course shall consist of two lanes, each three feet wide. The
lanes shall be clearly marked.
n The finish line shall be marked 20 feet from the front edge of the launch incline.
THE CARS
n The cars shall have no power source. All motive force is provided by gravity.
n Cars shall be based on an actual rocker cover from a British automobile engine.
n Wheelbase shall be no more than 24 inches.
n The car’s wheelbase must fit within the starting gate and the ramp’s rear-edge
n The cars body may “hang-over” the front starting gate or rear-edge of the ramp, but the
wheels must fit within the starting area of the track
n Wheel track shall be no more than 14 inches.
n Cars must have four wheels, each no more than six inches in diameter, and all wheels
must be in contact with the ground.
n A car may not “jettison” any type of object onto the ramp on its descent.
THE RACES
n As practical, awards will be presented in a Junior Class (16 and under) and an Adult Class
n Cars will be run in heats of two cars each.
n One alignment run down the course will be allowed prior to each heat.
n The cars are to be launched with their front wheels on the starting gate. The first car to
have its front wheels cross the finish line is the winner of that race. If neither car makes it
to the finish line, the car going the farthest in its lane wins.
n If the wheels of a car should cross over the lane marker, the car shall be disqualified. The
competing car immediately becomes the winner for that race.
n The car that wins two out of three races in that heat will be declared the winner and will
advance to the next round until all are eliminated except one car.

Cars will be grouped on the show field by classes established by the North American MGB Register.
VOTING will end at 1:30 pm Ballot boxes will be located at each class sign. Ballots are color-coded to
make tallying easier, and we ask that you place each class ballot in the appropriate box.
FOOD TRUCKS will be available for those who do not want to leave the show field, or bring your

This is an on-your-own event that all car enthusiasts will enjoy. The museum reflects the open-wheel,
dirt track racing so popular throughout the northeast, and exhibits a wide variety of machines from
many forms of racing — everything from sprint cars, midgets and stock cars to motorcycles, Indy cars,
NASCAR, drag racing and more.
SPECIAL HOURS FOR MG2018 — The museum is usually open only on weekends, but is opening on

DRIVE THE BATTLEFIELD | www.gettysburgfoundation.org
The Battle of Gettysburg (July 1-3, 1863) was a turning point in the Civil War, the Union victory that
ended Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee’s second and most ambitious invasion of the North. Often
referred to as the “High-Water Mark of the Confederacy,” Gettysburg was the war’s bloodiest battle,
and was also the inspiration for President Abraham Lincoln’s immortal “Gettysburg Address.”
Make sure to plan time to visit the Gettysburg National Military Park Museum and Visitor Center, only
1.5-miles from the hotel complex at 1195 Baltimore Pike (Route 15 south), and use the National Park
Service website to help with your planning.
Entry to the visitor center is free, but there is a fee for the film experience, cyclorama program and
access to the museum exhibits. The center hosts a massive book and gift store as well as the “Soldier’s
Rest” saloon that offers a full menu throughout the day.
The roads in the park are all public roads, so there is no admission fee to just drive around.
Pick up a free map and brochure at the visitor center to guide your way and help you find spots of
interest. You can rent a self-guided audio tour at the visitor’s center, or you can take a guided bus tour.
You can even hire a licensed battlefield guide to go with you in your car — although this may not be a
practical option in an MG.
See a map of Gettysburg and the battlefield park on opposite page.
Also located within the park is the Soldier’s National Cemetery (Gettysburg National Cemetery), the
final resting place of the Union soldiers who died at Gettysburg, and where President Lincoln gave his
famous address.
You may also be interested in visiting the Eisenhower National Historic Site, also in the park.
This is the farm home of President Dwight D. Eisenhower, and the only house he and Mamie ever
owned. Admission is by shuttle bus departing from the Visitor Center.

FREEDOM TRANSIT TROLLEY SERVICE | www.rabbittransit.org
If your driver is off somewhere with the car, don’t think you have to hang around the hotel. You can get
to the heart of historic Gettysburg on a local trolley service (OK, it’s really a bus) that stops at Gateway
Gettysburg at the Courtyard Marriott. From the transit center downtown you can transfer to the Red
Line to go to the National Cemetery and Visitor Center, and from either of those spots you can pick up a
Gold Line bus that circles the center of the battlefield area.
The current Gray Line schedule and map is below — Also check the website for details and check with
the hotel for advice and details on how to take advantage of this service. The trolley drivers are very
accommodating — they will pick you up and drop you off anywhere along their route.
