The projects highlighted in this publication were made possible because anglers and boat-
ers pay special federal excise taxes and import duties on fishing equipment and motorboat
fuels. The N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission receives a share of these federal monies,
which are matched with 25 percent state or other non-federal money and invested in im-
portant fishing and boating projects across the state. Without your support for the Federal
Aid in Sport Fish Restoration Program, the agency’s ability to provide fishing and boating
opportunities in North Carolina could be curtailed severely.
Under Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of
1973, Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, the Age Discrimination Act of
1975, Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, the U.S. Department of the Interior
and its bureaus prohibit discrimination on the basis of race, color, national origin, disabil-
ity, age or sex (in educational programs). If you believe that you have been discriminated
against in any program, activity or facility, or if you desire further information, please
write to: Equal Employment Officer, 1703 Mail Service Center, Raleigh, N.C. 27699-
1703; or call (919)707-0101.
Your purchase of fishing equipment and motor boat fuels supports Sport Fish Restoration
and boating access facilities.

Introduction
Public waters in the Piedmont Region of North Carolina provide good fishing for
striped bass, largemouth bass, American and hickory shad, crappie, assorted sunfish
(redear, redbreast, bluegill, warmouth and pumpkinseed), white and yellow perch, and
channel, blue, white and flathead catfishes.
The sites listed in this publication are found in the Piedmont Region (see map on pages
6,7). Sites are listed alphabetically by county and then by water body. Sites include:
• Community Fishing Program sites developed through partnerships between the
Commission and local municipalities and organizations.
• Public Fishing Areas developed through partnerships between the Commission and
local municipalities, state and federal agencies and private landowners.
• Boating Access Areas managed by the Commission, which provide free 24 hour access
to boat ramps on more than 80 waterbodies in NC.
• Other public access areas not affiliated with the Commission. These include sites
operated by federal agencies, N.C. State Parks, municipalities, local organizations, etc.
While some areas include a small maintenance fee, as noted in the “More Info” section,
the sites listed do not include for-profit entities, such as marinas.
Information for sites is broken down into a table that includes the following categories:
• Site name and the entity that owns or maintains the site;
• Directions;
• More Info, which includes universally accessible amenities (if applicable), loaner
tackle (if applicable), type of access (boat, canoe, pier, shoreline), and fishery present.

Roanoke Bass: Roanoke Bass are uncommon in North America.Their native range is restricted
to the Tar and Neuse River drainages in North Carolina. In the Piedmont, good places to catch
Roanoke bass are the Eno River, the Little River, the Tar River and Fishing Creek. To catch Roa-
noke bass, anglers should use light spincasting tackle. Popular lures include tiny jigs, doll flies,
streamers, small crank baits that imitate minnows, small spoons and spinners. If live bait is used,
small-to-medium minnows work best. Anglers should also try fly-fishing for Roanoke bass.

White bass: In North Carolina, white bass are native to the rivers in the western part of the
state that flow to the Mississippi. However, they have been widely introduced into rivers that flow
to the Atlantic Ocean, such as the Yadkin and Catawba Rivers. In the Piedmont, good fisheries for
white bass include Jordan Reservoir, Falls of the Neuse Resevoir and High Rock Lake.
White bass: Anglers often have success fishing for white bass using live minnows or shad and
artificial lures, such as jigs, spinners, spoons and small crankbaits. Look for spawning white bass
in the spring and schools of feeding white bass, or jumps, during the summer and fall.

Largemouth bass: In the Piedmont, the best places to fish for largemouth bass are ponds and
reservoirs. Use a wide variety of fishing methods. Artificial baits such as crankbaits, spinnerbaits,
topwaters, jigs and soft plastic lures imitating minnows, crayfish, salamanders and worms are
good choices. Live baits such as minnows, nightcrawlers and crayfish also can be effective.
Flathead catfish: Flatheads are most common in large rivers and lakes where they often
inhabit deep, slow stretches near submerged logs, brush, rip rap and underwater piles of debris. In
the Piedmont, the most popular places to fish for them are impoundments of the Yadkin River.

Channel catfish: Highly adaptable, channel catfish are found in ponds, streams, rivers, lakes
and reservoirs throughout North Carolina. In the Piedmont, the Neuse andYadkin/Pee Dee rivers
and many of the N.C.Wildlife Resources Commission’s Community Fishing Program sites are good
places to fish for channel catfish. Channel catfish feed mostly at night and are especially active
from sunset to midnight.“Stink” baits (cut fish, chicken livers, cheese, shrimp, crayfish blood baits,
etc.) are some of the best natural baits to use. Deep-diving crank baits fished slowly along the
bottom, spoons and, occasionally, spinners are popular artificial lures. The best months to fish for
channel catfish are April, May, September and October.

Bluegill: Bluegill are found in all types of habitats, except high-gradient trout streams. They
are most abundant in ponds and reservoirs and are found in rivers, creeks, backwaters and swamps
in the state. While garden worms and crickets are the preferred baits, bluegill (bream) will hit
almost any natural bait or small spinner. They can be caught on a number of different lures, us-
ing a small hook (No. 10). Fly-fishing is another popular way to fish for bluegill. If you haven’t
caught a bluegill within 15 minutes after fishing a spot, move on — they probably aren’t there.

Know the Differences Between a Snakehead & Bowfin - Northern snakehead, which
are native to Asia, have been known to displace native fishes in waters where they have been
illegally introduced. Northern snakehead are often mistaken for the bowfin, but unlike native
bowfin, they can have devastating impacts on resident fish communities by competing with them
for food and habitat, preying upon them and transmitting disease. Find out how to report a pos-
sible snakehead sighting by downloading the “Do You Know the Difference?” flier.
