Information about de giant panda:

General Facts:
The scientific name for the giant panda is Ailuropoda
melanoleuca.

Female pandas raise babies on their own (the male leaves
after mating).
They are good climbers. They climb trees and mountains.

Where do they live?

Pandas live in the mountains and forests of China. They like
big and cool forests with a lot of bamboo. They prefer cold
habitats such as mountains.
The pandas live in six small forest regions.
What do they look like?
A giant panda is a black and white bear. They look like
smaller bears. People think they are very cute. The panda's
thick coat is white, with black patches over its ears, eyes,
legs, shoulders and muzzles. This coat provides warmth in
its cool habitat. It is believed that this coat helps camouflage
the pandas.

How many are left?

Scientists think there may be around 1800 pandas left in the
wild, and 200 in captivity. About 60 zoos throughout the
world have Giant Pandas. China recently loaned the National
Zoo in Washington D.C. a pair of pandas for one million
dollars per year.

What do they eat?

They eat bamboo, insects, mushrooms, fish and fruits. They
are omnivores. This means that they eat meat and plants.
The bamboo plants finish very quickly because the Panda
eats huge amounts of it.

How does the Panda interact with other

animals?
The Giant Panda doesn't interact with many species because
it likes to be alone. The only time it interacts with other
pandas is when it gives birth to a baby, or during the
breeding season. In zoos the Pandas like to play with each
other. They will play and share toys. In the wild, this does
not happen often.
People, especially caretakers (people who take care of
pandas) have a very close relationship with pandas because
pandas are cute and friendly. Throughout a panda baby's
lifetime the caretaker will always be close with the Panda.

Interesting facts about the panda

Every day Pandas eat bamboo for up to 12 hours, and they
can eat up to 12 kilos of bamboo a day!
The giant panda’s scientific name is Ailuropoda
melanoleuca, which means “black and white cat-foot. They
are called “cat-foot” because their eyes look like a cat´s
eyes. Instead of having round pupils like other bears do,
they have slits as pupils.
Giant pandas grow to between 1.2m and 1.5m, and weigh
between 75kg and 135kg. Scientists aren’t sure how long
pandas live in the wild, but in captivity they live to be around
30 years old.
Baby pandas are born pink and measure about 15cm – that’s
about the size of a pencil! They are also born blind and only
open their eyes six to eight weeks after birth.
Pandas are black and white so that they can hide using
camouflage in the mountains of China. The snow in the
mountains is white, and the rocks and vegetation are black.
So the pandas use camouflage to hide from other pandas.
The panda became a very important animal for China, and is
now used in Chinese gold coins.
The Giant Panda is the symbol of the World Wildlife Fund
(WWF), a conservation organization.

Why are they endangered?

Pandas are endangered because people kill them. They are
also endangered because of Habitat destruction.
One the main reasons that panda populations have declined
is habitat destruction. When the habitat is destroyed, there is
not enough food for pandas. Pandas feed on several
varieties of bamboo that grow at different times of the year. If
one type of bamboo is destroyed by people who want to
build dams or houses, it can leave the pandas with nothing
to eat. The pandas can starve.

A way how to help giant pandas

We can grow bamboo and donate it to some zoos.

We can also stop destroying bamboo forests. Some companies
let you adopt a panda or a different endangered animal. The
money you pay is used to save panda.
We can also educate people about the problems the panda is
facing.
We can make magazines like this one and other things to educate
people.
We can write letters to the government of china and ask them to
donate more money to help the pandas.

Story of the giant panda

I´m a panda, I live in the mountains of china. I like eating
bamboo. We are endangered because of pouches poachers
and hunters are hunting us so our families are dying and
becoming endangered destroying trees so the majority don´t
have food so they die.
My family died from deforestation and because the hunters
killed them so I get very, very, very sad and furious. With my
other companions we agreed that we have to attack and kill
the hunters.
In the news the reporters said that we are so dangerous
because we killed the hunters so some helicopters of the air
force are searching in the mountains of china for to kill us.
I´m so intelligent so I said to my companions that we should
go for going to the South Pole so we can stay one week and
die so no one is going to bother us again.

GUYS: I do not like this story. The panda does not kill people!!!
Why don´t you write a story where the whole group (Bauti,
Agus, Gero, and Gonzalo) go to China for holidays. In China
you go for a hike in a bamboo forest in the mountains, and you
see an injured panda. And you have to save it and protect it
from poachers and deforestation. Maybe your group decides to
plant bamboo plants to make his new home, and in the end of
the story you tell us why it is important to save the pandas.
