1 I NTRODUCTION
This document describes various aspects of the connection (interfacing) of the Philips CT
Brilliance Series (Scanners and EBW workstations) to an Agfa DRYSTAR 4500, 5500/5503,
AXYS, 5300 and 5302 (hereafter referred to simply as CT Brilliance Series and DRYSTAR)
via DICOM 3.0 Print Management Service Class.

1.1 CT Brilliance Series

The Philips CT Brilliance series is composed of CT scanners and dedicated EBW
workstation, i.e.:
 Brilliance CT Scanners (Brilliance-6, Brilliance-10, Brilliance-16, Brilliance-16P,
Brilliance-40, Brilliance-64, Big Bore)
 Extended Brilliance Workspace workstation (EBW)

The CT Brilliance Series is the successor of the Mx8000 series and MxView workstation.
It is a PC based application using Windows XP as operating system. The new and old
applications are using the same Dicom interface for printing.

The majority of Philips modalities are using the Vequion common imaging platform, CT
Extended Brilliance Workspace as well.

1.2 DRYSTAR
The embedded software of the new generation Agfa Drystar printers is based on an
operating system consisting of Portex-DOS and Portex-Java. The new generation
DRYSTAR’s are all using the same Dicom Interface.

The digital images will be printed on the dedicated high quality DT2 media.
This film medium is available in 5 film sizes, i.e. 8INX10IN, 10INX12IN, 11INX14IN,
14INX14IN and 14INX17IN. Drystar 4500 only supports 8INX10IN and 10INX12IN.

1.3 Summary of connectivity key-points:

 The connection is based on the DICOM Basic Grayscale Print Management Service
Class, with CT Brilliance Series acting as the SCU and Drystar acting as the SCP.
 CT Brilliance Series supports all film sizes supported by DRYSTAR.
 CT Brilliance Series can send 8 or 12 bit images.
 The image matrix sent by CT Brilliance Series depends on the Printer Configuration on
the modality, e.g. Film Resolution. Therefore image processing is generally done by
DRYSTAR.
 CT Brilliance Series doesn’t support True Size.
 CT Brilliance Series requests via DICOM attribute Configuration Information
(2010,0150) a ‘OEM001’ perception LUT.
 For limitations and system behavior, see chapter 6.

3 I NSTALLATION & C ONFIGURATION

This section describes the installation and configuration procedures for the connection of CT
Brilliance Series to DRYSTAR.

IMPORTANT:
Both Philips and Agfa trained service engineers should be present to perform the installation
and configuration of the equipment. This chapter is not intended to provide systematic
instructions on the configuration of each device. Its intent is to point out the device-specific
connection and configuration requirements. Consult each device’s service manual for
detailed instructions and procedures.

3.1 Ethernet configuration

Both sides of the network connection should be configured the same way. Preferably both
sides as auto negotiation (=default), otherwise both sides should be configured fixed at the
appropriate duplex mode. In case of a fixed network port, ask the network administrator
for the proper duplex mode as the printer cannot determine this.

If the network settings are not correctly configured, you might have slow image transmission
as well as image transmission failure (association aborted or modality lock up).

For more information about recommended network settings for Hardcopy Devices, refer to
Field Service Bulletin number DD+DIS160.04E.

3.2 CT Brilliance Series

3.2.1 Creation of a printer driver
The Agfa Drystar printer must be selected during configuration of the Dicom printer in the
modality. If it is not available as possible choice, the Philips Engineer can get the Agfa
Drystar property file from a Philips service CD or from the Philips intranet:
Pww.mimit.best.ms.philips.com  interoperability.

The Philips engineer is also able to create a new printer driver himself.

To create a new printer driver on CT Brilliance scanner:

A new Drystar capability file can be created from the generic_DICOM.cpb file. The capability
files (.cpb) are located in the directory ‘C:\usr\tamar.root\cfg\Film’.
1. Login as administrator (or Config); password: mxs (or mxconfig or another (?))
2. Using Windows Explorer go to C:\usr\tamar.root\cfg\Film. This directory contains
various *.cpb files.
3. Copy the file Generic_DICOM.cpb and rename it to <newprintername>.cpb (example:
drystarAXYS.cpb).
4. Open <newprintername>.cpb with notepad and modify the file with the settings for the
new printer. Save the file after modification.
5. Logout.

6. Reboot the system

Note:
In case you are not able to print using the new created driver, check line ‘StringP1-
printerprotocolid’. Replace the ‘M952P’ with ‘Dicom’.

To create a new printer driver on CT Extended Brilliance Workspace:

In the CT EBW, a printer driver needs to be created for each printer (e.g.
Agfa.Printer.Drystar.Axys).
The printer files can be found in directory ‘C:\pms\Config\Printers’. Make a copy of an
existing printer file and edit the contents with the settings of the new printer.

Example of a Drystar file for CT EBW on contents can be found in chapter Error! Reference
source not found. Error! Reference source not found..

3.2.2 Info to provide to Philips

 AE Title of DRYSTAR
 IP Address of DRYSTAR
 Port Number of DRYSTAR (The default Port number is 104)

3.2.3 Dicom Printer Configuration

The new printer driver should be integrated in the configuration template of the modality.
Now the connection with the Drystar Dicom printer will be established.

To integrate the new printer driver into the CT Brilliance scanner:

1. Start the Network configuration program by double clicking the desktop icon
‘LanConfig’. This opens the LAN configuration tool ‘lanconfig.bat’.
2. Click Network and OK.
3. Click on Add Node and select Other to create a new device.
4. Enter the name (drystarAXYS for example) and IP address of the Drystar.

3.2.4 Printing from CT Extended Brilliance Workspace

1. Start the print application clicking the Film button.

2. The Printers tab enables to select an Active Printer and additional Settings.

3. In the Configure Printer window more printer settings can be changed.

3.3 DRYSTAR
 Refer to the Drystar Reference Manual for entering the printers AE Title, the IP
Address, netmask and the router address. This is done via the printer’s front panel in
either ‘key-operator’ or 'service' menu.
 If more than 2 different film sizes are required to be printed from the CT Brilliance
Series, then the parameter ‘Print even if Film Size ID/Medium type not supported’
must be set to NO in the dicom host profile created in the Drystar. This will prevent the
Drystar to print on an incorrect film size when the requested film size is not loaded in
the printer.
 A Dicom Host Profile must be created for next parameters and values:

5.2 Image and Pixel Matrices

CT Brilliance Series sends the composed and processed image in page mode (with header
and footer annotations burned in) using Image Display format ‘STANDARD\1,1’.

Although image processing is already done by CT Brilliance Series, the sent image matrix
can be smaller than the printer’s Pixel Matrix ((see also chapter 5.4 Image quality).

Following table gives an overview of the supported Pixel Matrices for all new generation
Drystar printers.

5.3 True size printing

CT Brilliance Series does not support True Size for printing.

5.4 Image quality

For workstation CT EBW, 4 Film Resolution settings are possible (see chapter 3.2.4
Printing from CT Extended Brilliance Workspace):
 Auto: the modality sends an auto selected image matrix.
 High: the modality sends an image matrix that exactly fits the pixel matrix of the printer.
 Medium: the modality sends an image matrix that is half the pixel matrix of the printer.
 Low: the modality sends an image matrix that is a fourth of the pixel matrix of the
printer.

When the sent image matrix is smaller than the printer’s pixel matrix, the printer will magnify
the image using default Magnification Type ‘cubicHighRes’ and Smooth Factor ‘-0.7’ (or -2.5
for older sw. versions).

When Film Resolution High is configured at CT EBW, we expect that the printer shall not
perform additional image scaling. Though, an auto switch to Magnification Type ‘cubicBell’
with Smooth Factor ‘0.9’ is activated by default (see printer browser menu ‘Service Tools’-
>‘Scaling setup’ in the ‘Connectivity’ section).

If the images are to crispy/sharp, use Magnification Type ‘cubicBell’ and change Smooth
Factor from 1 to a maximum value of 2. Value 1 means that no smoothing is done.

5.4.1 Perception LUT OEM001

CT Brilliance Series requires that the printer applies LUT OEM001 (so called Philips LUT) on
the image data.

Here are the expected density values measured on a ‘DSI test pattern’ sent by CT Brilliance
Series when OEM001 LUT is applied on the image by the printer:

B EHAVIOR
1. There is a dental application called DentaCT on the Brilliance Series. This application
uses a different calling AE when printing to the Drystar. Therefore, if the customer
wants to print from this DentaCT, you will need to create an additional dicom host profile
in the Drystar (see chapter 3.3).
