ALL ART, WHETHER IT PLEASE US OR NOT, HELPS TO ADD COLOR, EXCITEMENT, JOY, OR SADNESS AND, MOST OFTEN,

A SENSE OF AWE TO OUR LIFE’S EXPERIENCE. –Henry O. Dormann

Dear Parents / Guardians,

Art is for everyone! How often have you heard your child, or perhaps even yourself, say, “I can’t draw”?
Not True! This idea is a concept most children have put into their head sometime around grade 3. Have
you ever heard a first grader say they can’t draw? Nope...that’s because they know they are art-filled –
and art isn’t defined by drawing. Only from their environment do children determine their “I can’ts”. So,
let’s begin the year in the positive.

This year your child will be experiencing the fundamentals of art. The curriculum being taught is designed
to enhance skills, instill learning, and express joy. The curriculum being taught is a for the visual arts that
has produced national scholastic winners. Your child can become one as well. The following steps will
ensure this process:

1. Bring material each day and be prepared to work.

Materials needed for the semester/year:

• #2 Pencil – 12 count

• Eraser

• Ruler

• Scissors

• Folder with pockets

• Colored pencils – 24 count

• Unlined paper

• Lined paper

• Flash Drive

2. Complete weekly exercise on time

Weekly exercises are 30% of the nine-weeks grades. They are handed out each Monday and
returned for grading the following Monday. Exercises are considered warm-ups. The first 10
minutes of the class are devoted to the exercise. The drawings are to be done in pencil only (no
pens), unless otherwise directed. A variety of exercises will be given over the semester/year,
including one-sheet exercises reinforcing shading skills and color schemes. Exercises turned in on
time have the possibility to receive 100%. If an exercise is turned in one day late, the resulting
grade will be minus two points. The third day and thereafter, the resulting grade will be 50%.

3. Projects given each nine weeks are concept-based. Generally, a project takes 2-4 days to
complete. A student may take homework at any time to ensure completion on time. The grade
expectations are the same as given for weekly exercises.

4. Art grades are determined by an art assessment. Assessments are based on concepts taught and
criteria completed successfully. Students assess themselves, and then submit the work to be
graded by the teacher.
