Natural disasters are inevitable. They result from naturally occurring processes of the Earth

and they could be catastrophic, in that they may cause losses of life, both economic and physical

damage. Earthquakes, being one of the natural disasters, will affect the environment at large.

Nurses deal with disaster management. They should be well trained, having excellent skills,

knowledge and experience to decide on the best interventions that will aid the patients suitably.

The interventions should be procedural in a way that they will help in fighting the calamity and

preventing any adverse effect that could result from it. The purpose of this article is to highlight

the prevention measures and interventions in primary, secondary and tertiary levels done by nurses

to this calamitous and devastating earthquake disaster as in the case of Haiti 2010 earthquake.

The nursing interventions in relation to the disastrous earthquake of Haiti cover primary,

secondary and tertiary levels of prevention. The intervention I propose at primary level is creation

of awareness on the effects of the disaster. The people should be educated to get to know the

adverse impacts related to the catastrophe and the necessary methods of prevention (Pyles &

Svistova, 2015). Significantly, effective immunization should be provided to the workers and

volunteers before they enter the affected area. The prevention during the primary level occur in

early phases. The people to collaborate with during this level are the volunteers and workers to

ensure immunization and other preventive measures reach all people.

I the secondary level of prevention, I would propose an intervention on screening of

diseases for treatment. Although the primary level plays a significant role in early prevention of

the related diseases, some diseases arise despite the immunization provided in primary level (Pyles

& Svistova, 2015). Therefore, it is of significant effect to invent advanced methods of screening

for diseases in order to suggest their treatment. Technology should advance the machines for

screening. The effective personnel to work with are the trained nursing workers and the volunteers

who can work with advanced technology. The advanced invention on screening and treatment of

the diseases is appropriate between the second and fifth phases of the disaster.

Tertiary level of prevention involves plans on follow-ups for the treated people. Those

treated for the infections screened during the secondary level of prevention should be followed up

to ensure that they adhere to the prescriptions of medication. Moreover, rehabilitation services

should be offered to aid in maintenance of improved standards of the people’s lives in addition to

reduction of probabilities of diseases evolution (Pyles & Svistova, 2015). Some advanced safety

measures should be maintained on medical care and healthy practices among the people. The

appropriate people to collaborate with are the healthcare workers and other safety volunteers. The

tertiary intervention of prevention occurs between the third and fifth phases.

Given the increasing global earthquake disasters, nurses should be able to respond

effectively. The ultimate traits of nursing practice are to provide care to the wounded, aiding

individuals to deal with physical and emotional matters and to improve health in the community.

The primary intervention level will deal with administering vaccines and creation of awareness to

prevent any effect that could result from the catastrophe. Secondary intervention levels entail

treatment of the patient, usually after the disaster has happened. In addition, the tertiary level of

intervention will help in the follow ups and in knowing the progress of patient, done after the

secondary levels. Nurses must therefore take initiative and display their skills in delivery of

lifesaving and emergency care to maintain the public health.
