CHAPTER I

PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction

Nowadays, people are now very prone to sickness and diseases due to some factors

that can affect the health of the people. Climate change, pollutions, airborne diseases,

viruses and some other untoward incidents that may affect someone’s life. It is the reason

why medicine drugs are in demand in the market.

Synthetic medicines or drug medicines were the very first thing that people tends

to think whenever they feel sick or having a bad condition in health. In this cases doctor’s

prescription is a great help especially if the person does not have enough knowledge about

medicines.

A prescription (also prescription medication or prescription medicine) is a

pharmaceutical drug that legally requires a medical prescription to be dispensed. In

contrast, over the counter drugs can be obtained without a prescription. The reason for this

difference in substance control is the potential scope of misuse, from drug abuse to

practicing medicine without a license and without sufficient education. Different

jurisdictions have different definition of what contributes a prescriptions drug.

Prescription drugs are often dispensed together with a monograph (in Europe a

Patient Information Leaflet or PIL) that gives detailed information about the drug.
The use of prescription drugs has been increasing since the 1960s in the US 88%

of older adult (62-85 yrs. old) use at least prescription drug, while 36% take at least 5

prescription concurrently.

Half of the older adults take one or more prescription medication on a regular basis.

Doctors, pharmacists and other healthcare professionals can help care gives better

understand the benefits and risk associated with the medicine that your love one takes, but

it is important to pay extra attention to prescription medicine safety for seniors. Healthcare

professionals doing the homework on your loved one’s prescription medication is a great

way to become a more informed caregiver. (Dr. Monique, 2011)

To prevent and lessen the possibilities of misusing drugs that may cause their

sickness and diseases worst.

Background of the Study

In the locality of Tiaong, Quezon there were many pharmacies and drugstores

where everyone can purchase medicines for their needs. However, some of the medicines

were not being allowed to be sold without a doctor’s prescription. It is for the safety of the

individuals who will take these medicine drugs for medication.

Doctor’s prescription does have a very important role in medication, it is to secure

and to make sure that patients receive the right medicine, right dosage, and the right time

and how long will the patient take the medicine.

An overdose means having too much of a drug (or combination of drugs) for the

body is not able to cope with. There are number of signs and symptoms that show someone

has overdose, and these differ with the type of drug used. All drugs can cause an overdose,
including prescription medication prescribed by a doctor. It is important to know the

correct dosage, what drugs definitely not to mixed, and most importantly is to know how

to seek help when feeling not in control. (International Overdose Awareness, 2017)

Adults, children, infants, old ones, and even pregnant can be harmed and be in

danger in overdosing drug medicines

This problem is possibly occurring in the locality of Tiaong, Quezon for their were

instances that people are purchasing medicines without having a right knowledge and

without knowing what is their illness really is. It is in this light that the researchers would

like to help lessen and help in solving this problem in the locality.

Statement of the Problem

This study aims to determine the percentage level of Thea’s Pharmacy customers

in buying medicine with and without doctor’s prescription.

Specifically, it seeks answers to the following question:

Quantitative and Qualitative

1. What is the percentage distribution of the customers who buy medicine with

doctor’s prescription?

2. What kind of illness it is intended for?

3. What is the perception of the customers about the advantages and disadvantages in

buying medicine with and without the doctor’s prescription?

Significance of the Study

This study can hopefully contribute to lessen and solve the problem existing in the

locality and the country.

Self-medication is the use of nonprescription medicines by people on their own

initiative. Self-medication have several disadvantages when not taken action properly. The

risks when self-medication persist are misdiagnosis, use of excessive drug dosage or

overdose, prolonged duration of use, drug interactions and poly pharmacy that may lead

and cause liver failures, heart failure, hepatitis, renal failure and may cause side effects and

also may delay the recovery and is ultimately more costly. (Mostinside, 2017)
People mostly think that self-medication can make their expenses cheaper not

knowing that it may also cause their financial losses and worst is that life would be at risk

specially patients that cannot speak for themselves like the infants and old patients that

they cannot express what they really feel. Symptoms and signs are not enough to know

exactly their illness, they need a further check-up to have a reliable findings.

This study may help in keeping the safe medications with the doctor’s prescription

and improve the quality.
