for Year 7-9 English (Central Foundation Girls’ School)
Met with assistant headteacher to collaborate on adapting her originally math-based activities
for the English classroom.
Attended PD sessions on “Poundland pedagogy” and fostering a sense of play in the
classroom. Shared ideas from both sessions in department meetings.
Integrated new activities (e.g. skits to predict plot, folded paper races to list rhetorical
devices) into department-wide unit plans and created resources to share with colleagues.
PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
2017 Drawing out the best in your students: I revamped parts of my ELA 9 poetry unit to
incorporate this session’s techniques of using drawing to spark creativity. Students used
drawing activities to explore imagery and compare and contrast tone, culminating in an
open-ended artistic project on one of the poems studied.
2017 Addressing the needs of marginalized youth: I used this session’s information, on best
practices for supporting transgender youth in schools, to mentor and support a transitioning
student; re-evaluate my own use of gendered language; and create a more welcoming
learning environment for gender divergent students.
2016 Revamp how you teach reading: I ran weekly reading workshops with my ELA 9 classes
using the framework from this session, which provided tools to help students engage more
deeply with their personal reading.
