Interpretation of Pile Load Test Results

Three stages of interpretation:

1. Assessing results presented in test report
2. Processing the data from strain to force
3. Making sense of the test results

WKS 28/9/2017 3

Stage 1: Assessing results presented in test report

Example 1
Design: fp = 4000 kPa & fs = 2.5N
Measured: fp = 4000 kPa & fs = 2.7N

Response from relevant parties:

• Designer (QPD)
• Client (Consultant)
• Piling Contractor
• Instrumentation Specialist

Is everybody happy?

In addition to plotting all the

data in one plot (see below), it is
informative to plot the data at
each strain gauge level. This plot
reveals whether the skin friction
is fully mobilised at each level.

WKS 28/9/2017 17

These two sets of plots will provide invaluable information to the reviewers.

✓ Stage 1  fp & fs too low!

Need detail checking!
✓ Stage 2  Data reduction ok!

Why are fp & fs so low?

Need Level 3 check!

Pile Load Test

Why is the skin friction so low?

 Poor workmanship
 Mud cake from bentonite slurry
 Strain gauge faulty
 Wrong strain gauge factor
 Data recording error
 Piling contractor please explain
 Instrumentation contractor

Moving Forward . . . Average

1. Conduct independent interpretation when

in doubt. Adopted

2. Request relevant intermediate plots to be

included in report.
3. Request plots of load distribution curves
before and after adjustment.
4. Use N60 i.e. must apply correction to
hammer efficiency.
5. Request automated data logging instead of
SPT N Value
manual recording. 0 20 40 60 80 100

Last but not least . . .

The instrumentation sub-contractor should

be an independent party working directly
under the client. Once the report is done, it
should be sent to all parties involved.
