Dear Ms. Kapoor,

Sub : Response to questions as part of assessment criteria for Graduate Engineer.

1. As with Kerala, where I reside, the most prominent challenges faced by infrastructure sector
is related to land acquisition. With almost thrice the population density compared to rest of
the country (859 persons/sq.km), there is great pressure on available land. The land prices
that has plummeted in the past decade adds to the problem. As such, it has become
extremely hard for the authorities to get people’s faith in various projects. Land acquisition
at market rates would shoot up the development cost. A better model for land acquisition is
the need of the hour. To involve people losing land as participants in the development is one
measure to improve things.

Considering the national scenario, challenges are mostly related to the bureaucracy and lack
of funding sources. Excessive reliance on foreign agencies for funding public projects can
have adverse effects. Better models considering PPP or EPC based on risk profiles must be
considered.

2. Five years from now, I aim to be in a senior technical position in water resources modelling
sector with enough experience and skills to take up responsibilities concerning modelling,
assessment and design of projects. For this, I have to work on real world projects in the field.
The Master’s course I have done has introduced me to the concepts and some academic
projects were done during the period of course. However, real world projects would involve
more constraints, say, regarding government policies or societal requirement etc. The gap
would be bridged if I can work on multiple good projects for five years. I would have to
intentionally try for more responsible tasks as it is the only way to develop a holistic
knowledge of working projects.

3. I headed Google’s Map My Home 2.0 project (a voluntary involvement joint project by
Google Inc and Land Survey Board of Government of Kerala) at my institution level during
August 2016. The project was a pilot run in selected districts of Kerala. It aimed at bringing
businesses and public amenities online by geotagging them with contact information on
Google Map. It was devised in the form of intercollege competition.
Being a local, I knew the places and routes well. However, about half of the team members
were from other states; language was a barrier for them to collect information from locals.
Working in pairs was not optimal due to different class schedules. We worked on it by
providing the non-natives with some training in essential phrases along with copies of
authorization letters in Malayalam. However, since non-native’s field work was not as
efficient as that of Malayali students due to language barriers, we assigned the whole of
documentation to non-natives. This way, we could get everyone involved to their
maximum capacity.

Along with another local team member, I worked out optimal routes considering travel
facilities and density of shops and markets. We got an achievement award for bringing
more than 1500 locations on Google Maps.

4. In the Map My Home 2.0 project mentioned in response 3, there were some issues
regarding security of students during field data collection. Due to prevalent suspicion of
terrorist activities, people were skeptical about data collection and photography of public
places, which was part of the project. We anticipated this and raised the issue during initial
meetings itself. As a result, we were provided with an authorization letter from the Land
Survey Board, which eased our task.

It was the experience of working on similar projects in the past and the knowledge of the
attitude of local people that helped me anticipate the problem and get a solution in the
initial stages itself.

5. The Map My Home 2.0 project mentioned in response 3 was the best time I got to showcase
my leadership skills. Despite having issues of language barrier and team members not
familiar with the locality, we could tap all the available resources most efficiently and end up
in the top 10 achiever’s list. As a leader, I was able to bring together team members of
different semesters, in spite of their different academic schedules.

6. Most important goal that I myself set was to reduce my idle time. I had taken up part time
tuition for professional courses during my B.tech. Hence, during the occasional breaks, I was
able to keep myself engaged through these classes. It also helped me stay in touch with the
subjects and was bringing in a small revenue.

Thank you
Jawaz I K
