Lesson Topic: ___ Day 2 - Forces and Motion/Pushes & Pulls – Introductory Lessons____

Write a brief summary of your experiences teaching this lesson, addressing the following
questions:

 What went well? What did not go well? (Cite specific examples)

The graphing activity was good reinforcement of math concepts we had not
reviewed in a while and helped reinforce usage of graphing to help visually represent
data. While some students were enthusiastically collecting data throughout the day,
other students had forgotten and did not have good information to share. They were
still able benefit from other students’ data.

 How well were the lesson’s student performance objectives attained?

The writing activity allowed me to assess whether students were recognizing forces
used in so many common activities throughout their day. The activity was designed
to encourage them to write a “small moment,” forcing them to really look closely
and narrate the small details of a moment in time, thus correlating with the second
grade L.A. standard for narrative writing. The activity was great for most of my class,
but I did have a few students who continue to struggle with seeing small details. This
activity actually forced them to do this; however it was hard for them.

 Did classroom activity center on science understanding, inquiry, and sense-

making by all students?

Yes, again it required students to really consider the forces of motion in their every
day lives and environment, this encouraging a more cognizant existence and inquiry.
Applying these ideas with use of vocabulary in a writing assignment reinforces their
understanding and ability to “talk the talk,” while meeting the standard of
constructing an explanation.
 Did your scientific content knowledge enable you to support students’
construction of knowledge and understanding of important scientific concepts
and processes?

Yes.

 When you have the opportunity to re-teach this lesson, what will you do
differently (strategies, teaching tools, assessments, etc.) to improve student
learning for all students?

To improve student learning for all students, especially those who have a more
difficult time with writing small moment narratives, I might have them work with a
partner to write a story together.
