TYPICAL GRATING LAYOUT
SPAN DIRECTION

 Grating and expanded metal have to be supported in a specific way. The direction that
the load bars run is the important direction for grating and is referred to as the span.
 For expanded metal the span is in the direction of the strands or Long Way Mesh
(LWM).
 Span is always the last dimension given when referencing a panel size.
 Grating and expanded metal have to be supported 90° to the span direction and do not
require support on the other sides.
Span:
Overall dimension of a panel
measured parallel with load bar.
Indicated by this symbol

Width:
Overall dimension of a panel
measured at right angles to the
load bars. Always called “Width”
even if greater than the length.
Penetration & Cutout

1. CUT OUT
Grating areas removed from
panel to permit passage for
installation of pipes, plant
and structural and handrail
items.

2. PENETRATIONS
As for cut out but typically
within the grating panel and
not on the edge.

3. CUT TO SIZE ONLY

Refers to the process of
leaving the panels with a raw
cut edge and not banded as
described above.
STANDARD OPENING SIZES FOR PENETRATION
BANDED & FIXING OF GRATING

BANDING:-

Refers to the process of welding a flat bar

(normally 5mm) to the loadbars after they have been cut to
size to provide a uniform appearance around all sides of
a grating panel. This process also helps prevent injury from
laceration during installation and assists in keeping the
panels flat.

Welding of load bearing bar to banding is always an issue. Banding bar to bearing bar
connection may be any one of the following, every bearing bar welded to banding bar on
both sides, every bearing bar welded at one side only, every fourth bearing bar welded
on both sides and every fourth bearing bar welded on both sides and other 3 bars are cut
short by 3 to 5 mm gap. More the welding, more the distortion it causes

Type-T1---Welded –-Banded end---No Nosing
Type-T3---Welded –-Banded end---Plate Nosing
Type-T5---Welded –-Banded end---Abrasive Nosing

b) Bolted type
Type-T2---Bolted –-Holes end Plate--No Nosing
Type-T4---Bolted –- Holes end Plate- --Plate Nosing
Type-T6---Bolted –- Holes end Plate- --Abrasive Nosing

TYPICAL GRATING ARRANGEMENT
GRATING-TIP OFF
Normally client spec specifies the grating size and specification. Some Clients like ONGC has specific serration bars not commonly
available – order sufficient with extra allowance.
The gratings may be plain or with serrated bearing bars – check client spec.
Most of the clients require galvanization with 915 gm / sq. m (for Elf - 700 gm/sq. m), for galvanizing subcontract this need to be clearly
specified.
Preferably grating shall be purchased black and after fabrication and test fit sent it for galvanization. Some galvanized panels may be
required to do last minute modifications.
Some clients are very specific about banding bars at the edges of each panels, others specify at the perimeter only. Purchase sufficient
quantity of banding bars along with grating panels (banding bars may be serrated or plain depending on clients). Some clients specify only
exposed edges and penetrations alone to be banded. However for jacket and boat landing provision of banding bar is a technical
requirement ( or all the bearing bar need to be welded to supports )
Welding of load bearing bar to banding is always an issue. Banding bar to bearing bar connection may be any one of the following, every
bearing bar welded to banding bar on both sides, every bearing bar welded at one side only, every fourth bearing bar welded on both sides
and every fourth bearing bar welded on both sides and other 3 bars are cut short by 3 to 5 mm gap. More the welding, more the distortion it
causes.
Gratings are fixed to the support by welding, clips, hilti dx type fasteners. Decide this at the beginning of project. There are different types
of clips, yard prefers the type which gets locked between bearing bars and easy to install – get a sample to verify, before the entire
purchase.
Hilti fasteners require special attention as it requires special tools. DX type fasteners cause through penetration problem with thin flanges (
< 12 mm) and can get loosened during some period. The latest drill ( X-BT) type seems to be a good system, however yet to implement here
in yard.
The grating layouts at the stair access, ladder access need special attention (extension inside, side supports etc.).
The grating need to be minimum 25 mm overlapped on the supporting member UNO
For side access ladder areas make sure that the grating is extended till the edge of the access way – many times the grating is stopped at
the middle of the support.
Make sure that grating is extended to limit the gap between the ladder rung and the access platform for the front access ladder.
Some of clients ( Aramco ) may specify the grating panels to be galvanized and painted for some specific projects– check specs
Due to corrosion issues some of the clients specify composite gratings ( FRP) at jacket area. There are two types molded / pultruded
construction details, check client specs for the specific type. Proper fixing details to be developed based on vendor recommendations
At high temperature exposed zones ( flare tower ), SS gratings may be required ( check client specs ), galvanizing is OK for 300 deg C only.

TAKEN CARE IN MIND

WHILW USING FRP :-

Manufacturer: USA
When giving order for FRP
Should specify all cutouts,
Penatrations even 5mm
Cleareance also. Once item is
Manufactured can not alter.
Full panel is loss only.
