Lord of the Flies Book Review

Rating: 4.2
A group of schoolboys are stranded on a deserted island and it is up to them to survive and
get rescued.
Lord of the Flies is an amazing and bestselling book by the British author William Golding
and is a very good book to read.
The general conflict is the rivalry between Jack and Ralph, and other problems
are the savagery in Jacks tribe when they steal things and go on wild hunts to kill a pig, which
Jack thinks is the number one priority to survive. The setting is a deserted island which the
author describes exceptionally well, like, “All ‘round the place of the assembly the grey trunks
rose, straight or leaning and supported to the roof of leaves.” on page 83.
The main characters in Lord of the Flies are Ralph, Piggy, and Jack. Some side characters are
Simon, Sam, Eric, Roger, and Maurice. Piggy is fat and smart and he wears glasses. Ralph is a
fair boy with black hair and Jack also has coarse black hair. The characters develop throughout
the story in a bad way since they become more and more uncivilized and crazy. Ralph is the
leader with Piggy by his side. Later, Jack “steals” the boys the boys from Ralph’s tribe and goes
off to make his own tribe. Jack is uncivilized and irresponsible since he needlessly hurts others.
Piggy is smart because he showed everyone how to make fire using his “specs” or glasses. Ralph
is kind and responsible because he calls assemblies and assigns jobs to the boys.
The island and the problems the boys face are adventurous because of how they are trying to
survive, hunting and searching for the beastie, and bad relationships among the characters. Also
the book provides plenty action-packed moments like when the whole group goes hunting and
chanting “Kill the pig! Kill the pig!” Furthermore, it is also filled with emotional moments like
Ralph frantically calling assemblies after Jack claimed them, and crying with Piggy while saying
“I want to go home, oh god I want to go home!”
Lord of the Flies would generally not be recommended for very young kids due to violent
and tragic scenes. An example could be how they kill animals and beat each other. Also, some
long and difficult words would make the writing uneasy to comprehend.
Lord of the Flies has been made into a movie; one in 1963 and another one in 1990. It is an
overall pleasing book to read and share with others.
