The Netherlands

The Netherlands a country located in Western Europe. The country


is a part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, which also consists of
the Netherlands Antilles and Aruba. It is bordered by the North Sea
to the north and west, Belgium to the south and Germany to the
east.

The official language in The Netherlands is Dutch, but Friesland has


it’s own official language, Fryslân, and there are several dialects that
are spoken in the different regions of The Netherlands. A substantial
number of inhabitants also speak English, and a lot of Dutch schools
teach their students German and French.

The Netherlands is often referred to as Holland, which is formally


incorrect, but most Dutch citizens are aware of the widespread
usage of this name, and often refer to the country in this way
themselves.

The dykes, one of the major things The


Netherlands is famous for, are used to
protect the low-lying and flat lands
against flooding. Other things the
Netherlands is famous for are windmills,
tulips, clogs, cheese and legalised
usage of soft drugs.

With about 16 million inhabitants


spread across 12 provinces, The
Netherlands is the 25th most densely
populated country in the world.
Although the cities are modest in size
compared to other countries, there are
a lot of small and middle sized villages
and cities.

Amsterdam is the capital of The Netherlands and located in North


Holland, although the government is located in The Hague in South
Holland.

A few of The Netherlands many traditions include visiting your


neighbour, friends or family for a cup of coffee or tea, eating
“beschuit met muisjes”, a form of form of rusks with small sugared
aniseed balls, whenever a baby is born and celebrating
“Sinterklaas”.
North-Holland

North-Holland is a province between the North Sea and the


IJsselmeer. A large part of the province is reclaimed land in the form
of polders and is located below sea level. North-Holland hosts
several big cities like Amsterdam, Hilversum, Den Helder, Alkmaar,
Zaandam and Hoorn, the island Texel is also part of North Holland.

Rijksmuseum Amsterdam

The Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam is the largest


and most imported museum in The Netherland.
In the more then 200 rooms you van find
paintings by Dutch painters Rembrandt van
Rijn, Jan Steen, Johannes Vermeer and many
more. One of the main attractions is Rembrandt
van Rijn’s painting “The Nachtwacht”.

Afsluitdijk (Enclosing Dyke)

The afsluitdijk is a 32 kilometres long dyke


connecting North-Holland and Friesland. It was built
in 1930 to keep the IJsselmeer from being flooded by
the North Sea, creating the province of Flevoland in
the process.

Madame Tussauds

Madame Tussauds is a famous wax museum in


Amsterdam. It contains several wax figures of famous
people. New figures are added often, and the
possibility of taking a photograph with your idol
makes it a fun place to visit.
Circuit Park Zandvoort

Circuit Park Zandvoort is a motor sport racetrack


located in the dunes near the town of Zandvoort. It
is used mostly for car races and hosted The
Netherlands Formula 1 Grand Prix until 1985.

Flower Auction Aalsmeer

The flower auction is Aalsmeer is the largest


flower auction in the world. As a visitor, you
can walk over a gallery 6 metres above the
work floor, so you can see with your own
eyes how the auction process works and
watch millions of flowers, plants and seeds
find their way to their customers around the
world.
South-Holland

South Holland, located on the North Sea coast is the most densely
populated province of the Netherlands. It contains several big cities
like The Hague, Rotterdam, Dordrecht, Leiden, Delft and Gouda. Two
of European’s major rivers flow through South-Holland; the Rhine
and Meuse.

Keukenhof (Garden of Europe)

Keukenhof, also know as the Garden of Europe


near Lisse is the world’s largest flower garden. It
attracts about 750,000 visitors per year. There
are approximately seven million flowers planted
every year, including The Netherland’s best
known flower, the tulip.

The Harbour of Rotterdam

The harbor of Rotterdam is Europe’s largest


harbour and used to be the largest harbour in the
world until Shanghai took over in 2004. The
harbour has many points of interest, like the
Euromast and the bridges of Rotterdam.

Madurodam

Madurodam is a miniature city in Scheveningen


that draws hundreds of thousands visitors
yearly. It contains typical Dutch buildings and
landmarks on a 1:25 scale and several moving
vehicles like cars, boats, airplanes, trains and
trams.
Mauritshuis

Mauritshuis is a Museum in The Hague. It has a


large art collection, including paintings by famous
Dutch artists. It used to be a state museum, but
was privatised in 1995. The building was almost
completely destroyed by a fire in 1704, but was
completely rebuilt.

Diergaarde Blijdorp

Diergaarde Blijdorp in Rotterdam is one


of the oldest zoos in the Netherlands. It
celebrated it’s 150th birthday in 2007.
The Oceanium is a massive aquarium
that lies in the zoo.
Zealand

Zealand is located in the south-west of The Netherlands and


consists of a number of islands and most of the land is below sea
level. The capital of Zealand is Middelburg. Tourism is very import
and one of the main economic activities. The sunny beaches makes
Zealand a popular holiday destination in the summer.

Zeeuws Museum

The zeeuws museum is a museum about


Zealand in Middelburg. It’s the largest
museum in the province. One of it’s main
attractions are famous Zealandish tapestry’s
and the historic collection of the “Koninklijk
Zeeuws Genootschap der Wetenschappen”, a
society that was started in 1769 that
stimulates the practice of art and sience.

Miniature Walcheren

Miniature Walcheren, which is located in


the Middelburg town centre contains the
whole of Walcheren on a scale of 1 to 20.
It also has a number of unusual and
original playground facilities for children.

Historical Museum De Bevelanden

The Historical Musem De Bevelanden is located


in an old building that used to be a monestary
and an orphanage. It’s located in the centre of
Goes.
Neeltje Jans

Neelte Jans is a fantastic water theme park. You can


visit the delta works, walk through the inside of the
storm surge barrier and enjoy some of Zealand’s
local specialities.

The Arsenal

The Arsenal in Vlissingen is a museum in


Vlissingen. It has a pirate park, an aquarium with
sharks and rays and a lookout tower.
North-Brabant

North-Brabant is located in the south of the country, bordered by


The Meuse river in the north, Limburg in the east and Zealand in the
west. A few of the big cities in Brabant are Eindhoven, Breda, Den
Bosch and Tilburg.

Safari park Beekse Bergen

Safari park Beekse Bergen is a Zoo near


Tilburg. It’s the biggest wildlife zoo in the
Benelux and has around 150 different species
of animals. One of the special features of the
park is the ability to drive through the park in
your own car, giving the impression of being
on a safari.

Efteling

The Efteling is a theme park in Kaatsheuvel. It’s


the largest and one of the most popular attraction
parks in the Benelux. The park originally had a
fairy tale theme for young children, but nowadays
it appeals to both young and old with its variety of
amusement rides.

Het Land van Ooit

Het Land van Ooit, which translates to The Land of


Someday is a theme park in Drunen. The park has
a medieval theme and focuses on theatre by hiring
actors who played a character in the park.
Tilburg Funfair

The Tilburg Funfair is the largest and most


expensive funfair in the Benelux, with over a
million visitors yearly. It’s is held in the
summer and spans around 5 days.

The Textile Museum

The Audax Textile Museum in Tilburg is a museum


about textile. It has working machines that show
how people used to experience working with
textile in the past, a textile shop and various
informative presentations.
Limburg

Limburg is the most southern province of The Netherlands, bordered


by Brabant to the north, Germany to the east and south and
Belgium to the east and south. It’s capital is Maastricht. A few other
big cities are Heerlen, Sittard, Kerkrade, Valkenburg and Weert.

Drielandenpunt

The “Drielandenpunt” is a point in Vaals where the


borders of Belgium, Germany and The Netherlands join. It
is also the highest point of the Netherlands. There are
two lookout towers and a maze.

The Caves of Valkenburg

The caves of Valkenburg are caves that were left


after the mining of marl stopped in Valkenburg.
The marl originates from a time where Limburg
was still covered by sea, and it contains a large
amount of fossils. There are various pieces of arts
scattered throughout the caves.

The Valkenier

The Valkenier in Valkenburg is a theme park that, for


the most part, focuses on small children. The parks
slogan translates to “the cheapest amusement park
in Europe”.
Bonnefanten Museum

The Bonnefanten Museum in Maastricht is a


museum for old masters and contemporary fine
art in the province of Limburg. It’s also a
recognizable landmark of Maastricht.

Thermae 2000

Thermae 2000 is a resort with spa’s, sauna’s,


fitness and beauty treatments. It’s located in
Valkenburg and is one of the few places in
The Netherlands where you can enjoy
refreshing, caring power of ultra-healthy
thermal water.
Gelderland

Gelderland is The Netherland’s largest province. Germany and the


provinces Limburg, North-Brabant, Utrecht, Flevoland and Overijssel
border it. It’s capital is Arnhem. Other large cities include Apeldoorn,
Doetinchem, Nijmegen and Zuthpen.

Apenheul

The Apenheul in Apeldoorn is a zoo that specializes in


apes and monkeys. It was the first zoo in the world
where monkeys and apes could walk around freely
between the visitors.

Burgers Zoo

Burgers Zoo in Arnhem is one of the biggest zoo’s


in The Netherlands. It has several theme sites,
including a safari park, a tropical rainforest, a
swamp, a desert and a seawater aquarium.

Arnhem’s Open Air Museum

Arnhem’s open air museum is a museum in a


wooded park on the outskirts of Arnhem. It has
more than 80 historic houses, farmhouses and
mills. There are actors reinacting old jobs like
the fisherman, blacksmith and miller.
Dolfinarium Hardewijk

The Dolphinarium in Hardewijk is a theme park with


lots of aquariums. There are shows where trainers
show tricks they learned to sea animals like dolphins
or killer whales.

Het Loo

Museum Het Loo in Apeldoorn is a former


royal palace. It has beautiful gardens a great
collection of carriages and more.
Utrecht

Utrecht, located in the centre of The Netherlands, is the smallest


province of the country. It’s bordered by Gelderland in the east and
north, South-Holland in the west and north, North-Holland to the
north and Flevoland to the north. Some big cities in Utrecht are
Utrecht, Amersfoort and Zeist.

The Dom Tower

The Dom Tower (Domtoren) of Utrecht is, at


112.5 meters in height, the tallest church
tower in The Netherlands and the symbol of
the city. It was one of the largest towers
constructed in Europe during the fourteenth
century. The carillon is currently Europe’s
largest, weighing in at 10000 kilograms with
a diameter of 2.7 metres.

Dutch Railway Museum

The Dutch Railway Museum (Nederlands


Spoorwegmuseum) in Utrecht is the Dutch national
railway museum. It’s located in a former railroad
station, the “Maliebaan Station”.

Dierenpark Amersfoort

Dierenpark Amersfoort is a zoo in


Amersfoort. It was founded in 1948
and was initially a small zoo wit a
monkey, a bear, a camel and some
farm animals. It has since grown
and currently has an area of
approximately 10 hectares with
more than a hundred different
species and about 650000 visitors
yearly.
Museum Van Speelklok tot Pierement

The Museum van Speelklok tot Pierement is a


national museum in Utrecht. It has a collection of
automatically playing musical instruments, most of
which still work. On display are music boxes,
pianolas, music clocks, barrel organs and more.

Paleis Soestdijk

Palijs Soestijk is a palace in Soestdijk.


From 1937, it was de residence of
princess and queen Juliana der
Nederlanden and prince Bernhard.
It’s now owned by the state. In 2006
it was opened to the public for a
period of 3 years. It contains an
exposition about the history of the
palace and it’s inhabitants.
Flevoland

Flevoland, located in the centre of the country was established as


the twelfth province of The Neterhalnds in 1986. It is bordered by
North Holland to the west, Utrecht and Gelderland to the south,
Overijssel to the east and Friesland to the north. Some of the big
cities in Flevoland are Almere, Dronten and it’s capital Lelystad.

Walibi World

Walibi World is a theme park in Biddinghuizen.


It’s gone through several name changes. It
started out as Flevohof, which changed to Walibi
Flevo, which then changed to Six Flags and
finally Walibi World. It has several attractions
and themed areas.

Batavia Stad

Batavia Stad (Batavia City) is an outlet centre at the


coast of Lelystad, named after the Batavia. It’s built in
the style of seventeenth century fortifications and all
the houses are made of wood.

Batavia

The Batavia was a seventeenth century ship


that was built in Amsterdam and shipwrecked on
her maiden voyage. It was made famous by the
mutiny and massacre that took place among the
survivors. In 1995, a replica of the ship was put
to water and it now rests in the harbour of
Lelystad and is open to the public.
Nieuw Land Erfgoedcentrum

The Nieuw Land Erfgoedcentrum (New Land


Heritage Centre) in Lelystad is a museum about the
Flevopolders in Lelystad. The building is shaped like
a dyke. It exhibits an exposition about Cornelis Lely.

Museum De Paviljoens

Museum De Paviljoens in Almere, is a museum


about modern art. It contains the Almere
Collection, a collection of pieces of art that
belong to the city of Almere.
Overijssel

Overijssel is in the central eastern part of The Netherlands. The


name means “Lands across the river IJssel”. It’s bordered by
Gelderland in the south, Flevoland in the west, Friesland and
Drenthe to the north and Germany to the east. Overijssel’s capital is
Zwolle, other big cities are Almelo, Deventer, Enschede and
Hengelo.

Avonturenpark Hellendoorn

Avonturenpark Hellendoorn, or Adventure Park


Hellendoorn, is a theme park near Hellendoorn. It was
founded in 1936 and has grown to a amusement park for
young and old.

National Park De Weerribben

National Park De Weerribben is a huge park


and contains one of Europe’s biggest swamps.
Until 1920, the area was used to harvest peat.
In 2004, the park was exclaimed to be the
most beautiful place in The Netherlands.

Twents Techniekmuseum HEIM

Twents Techniekmuseum HEIM is a museum


in Hengelo. It gives an image of the Twents
industry, from steam machines to space
travel. The museum’s mottos translates to
“Discover! Play! Enjoy!” and “Forbidden not
to touch”.
Peperbus

The Peperbus is a well-known tower in Zwolle. It


got it unusual because it looks like a pepper
container (a Peperbus). It’s 75 metres high and was
the biggest tower of Zwolle until the IJsseltoren was
built.

Ecodrome Zwolle

Ecodrome Zwolle is a unique theme park that


revolves around nature. It has various
playgrounds for children and exhibitions.
Drenthe

Drenthe is located in the nort-east part of The Netherlands. It is


bordered by Overijssel to the south, Friesland to the west,
Groningen to the north and Germany to the east. It’s capital is
Assen. Other big cities include Emmen and Hoogeveen.

Traffic Park Assen

Trafic Park Assen is a theme park that focuses on


traffic. It’s located in Assen. Children can drive
around the park in several vehicles and learn about
traffic rules.

Museum Village Orvelte

Orvelte is a small village near Hoogeveen. It


presents itself as a museum village. There is a
saw mill, a blacksmith and a wooden shoe (a
klomp) maker. There live less than a hundred
people in the village.

The Drents Museum

The Drents Museum in the centre of


Assenis a museum with a vast
collection about the prehistory of the
province. On display are several bog
body’s, like the girl from Yde, several
artifacts from the funnelbeaker culture
and the oldest boat, the Canoe from
Pesse.
Emmen Zoo

Emmen Zoo (Dierenpark Emmen),


formerly known as Noorder Dierenpark
in Emmen is the only big zoo in the
northern part of the country. One of the
main specialties of the park are hurds of
animals on relatively large plains.

Camp Westerbork

Camp Westerbork in Hooghalen was a


concentration camp during World War
2. It’s function was to assemble Dutch
Jews for transport to other Nazi
concentration camps. Anne Frank’s
family was one of the last family’s put
on a train for Auschwitz. The camp was
demolished in the 1970s and turned
into a museum and monument of
remembrance.
Groningen

Groningen is the most north-eastern province of the Netherlands. It


borders Germany to the east, Drenthe to the south and Friesland to
the west. The capital of Groningen is Groningen, other big cities
include Appingedam, Delfzijl and Veendam.

Groninger Museum

The Groninger Museum is a museum


located on an artificial island in
Groningen. The building has three areas;
the main area with the entrance and the
gold coloured depot, the pavilion of
Michele de Lucchi and Philippe Starck and
finally the pavilion of Alessandro Mendine
and Coop Himmelblau.

National Carriage Museum

The National Carriage Museum (Nationaal Rijtuigen


Museum) in Leek shows the history of carriages in The
Netherlands. With more then 300 carriages, it has the
largest collection in the world. The museum receives
15000 to 25000 visititors yearly.

The Hanging Kitchens

The hanging kitchens in Appingdam


are actual kitchens that were built
above the water because there wasn’t
enough room in the warehouses when
they were converted to homes where
people could live.
Seal Rehabilitation Centre Lenie't Hart

Lenie ‘t Hart (Zeehondencrèche Lenie 't


Hart) is a seal rehabilitation and
research centre in the village of
Pieterburen. It has been rehabilitating
sick and injured seals since the 1970s.
It has evolved from a simple crèche to a
scientific research-based seal hospital
where hundreds of seals are cared for
yearly.

De Vier Winden

De Vier Winden, which translates to the


four winds, is a mill in Pieterburen. It was
used until the 1960s, and was restored in
1972 and 1973.
Friesland

Friesland is located in the north of the country. It is bordered by


Groningen and Drenthe to the East, Overijssel and Flevoland to the
north and North-Holland to the west. The province has it’s own
official language, Fryslân. It also has several Frisian islands.

Fries Museum

The Fries Museum in Leeuwarden was


opened in 1881. One of the main attractions
is the solver popta treasure from the
seventeenth century.

Harlinger Aardewerk- en Tegelfabriek

The Harlinger Aardewerk en Tegelfabriek is a


factory that was opened in 1972. It produces and
sells earthenware and tiles.

Jopie Huisman Museum

The Jopie Huisman Museum in Workum is a


museum that shows the works of artist Jopie
Huisman. The current museum is actually the
second museum and was opened in 1992 and
expanded in 2001. The first museum used to
be located in the old Sleeswijckhuys. The
museum is supported by a group of friends.
Het Vrouwtje van Stavoren

Het Vrouwtje van Stavoren, or the woman from


Stavoren, is a tale from the sixteenth century. In
1969 a statue was erected in Stavoren in honour
of the story.

Brandaris

The Brandaris is a lighthouse on the island


Terschelling. It is The Netherland’s oldest
lighthouse. It’s 54 metres high and it’s light
reached for 55 kilometres. It was also the first
lighthouse in The Netherlands that received
electric light.
