KORG microKONTROL Controller Template

Using a hardware controller with Stylus RMX gives you maximum control
over your groove production. You can edit, re-mix, and manipulate RMX
grooves instantly in real time. It’s powerful, fun, and musically rewarding!

There are two main steps to perform in order to get started; loading the data
for the microKONTROL, and selecting the template in Stylus RMX.

The microKONTROL has several illuminated displays that function as labels

for the main controls and scenes. Our template takes full advantage of these
features.

As an added feature, you’ll find our microKontrol Scene data for Atmosphere
and Trilogy with this file set.
STEP 1 – SET UP THE microKONTROL

Make sure you have installed the hardware and software for the
microKONTROL according to KORG’s documentation.

The microKONTROL holds twelve controller “scenes” in memory. Scenes can

be stored individually (.mkd extension) or as a Scene Set (.mks extension).

A Scene Set is a collection of twelve Scenes. We have provided a Scene Set

file as well as the individual Scene file. (You’ll also find Scene data that has
been programmed for Atmosphere and Trilogy as a bonus!)

Should I use the Scene Set file or the individual Scene file?

Select the Scene Set file named RMX_microKONTROL Scene Set.mks if

wish to load all of the Scenes for RMX into the microKONTROL in one easy
step.

Alternatively, you can customize your own Scene Set using the
microKONTROL Editor Librarian. This allows you to mix and match RMX
scenes with those you already have. We’ve provided the individual Scene
data for this purpose. Consult KORG documentation for details on how to use
the Editor Librarian to create custom Scene Sets.

TRANSMITTING A SCENE SET TO THE microKONTROL

IMPORTANT - This procedure will overwrite the contents of the

microKONTROL memory.

1. Launch the microKONTROL Editor/Librarian.

2. From the File menu, select “Open Scene Set…”.

3. Select the Scene Set file you wish to use.

(For example, RMX_microKONTROL Scene Set.mks). The file is

located in the KORG microKONTROL support directory within the
MIDI Learn directory.

…/SAGE/Stylus RMX/Patches/MIDI Learn/KORG microKontrol/microKONTROL Scene Set.mks

4. Click “Open”.
The Editor/Librarian now shows the following:

5. Click on the Transmit button to send the data to the microKONTROL.

After a few seconds, the data transmission is complete.

Press the Scene button on the microKONTROL to enter Play mode.

STEP 2 – SET UP STYLUS RMX

Make sure you have Stylus RMX version 1.5 or above installed.

SELECT THE CONTROLLER TEMPLATE IN RMX

From the Stylus RMX Utility menu (the button denoted with a Floppy icon),
select MIDI Learn / Load Template.

Select the template Korg microKontrol.ctl_rmx.

You are ready to control Stylus RMX from the microKONTROL.

USING RMX AND THE microKONTROL

The Korg microKontrol.ctl_rmx template works with one Scene in the

microKONTROL.

Scene Pad 1, which contains the RMXremix Scene, is designed to work with
all eight Stylus RMX parts simultaneously.

Be sure that your host application is sending MIDI to RMX; then load grooves
into all eight parts.

On the microKONTROL, select the scene named “RMXremix”. (See KORG

documentation for instruction on how to select a scene.)

Press the Joy-SW switch on the microKONTROL – and RMX will “ALL Play”.
Press it again to stop playback.

The table at the end of this document shows how the microKONTROL
hardware controls are mapped to Stylus RMX. Have fun exploring the
amazing features of Stylus RMX from your hardware controller!

Note to Logic Pro 7 Users:

When launching Logic Pro 7.1 with a microKONTROL connected to the computer,
Logic will assume that the microKONTROL is a native Control Surface. You can
defeat this behavior by deleting the microKONTROL icon in Logic’s Control Surface
Setup page (in Preferences), or you can follow the steps below to permanently
disable this behavior.

1. Ctrl+Click on the Logic Pro application icon on your Applications folder.

2. Select “Show Package Contents”
3. Delete the file microKONTROL.bundle located in

…/Logic Pro/Contents/MIDI Device-Plug-ins/microKONTROL.bundle

4. Delete the preference file com.apple.logic.pro.cs located in

~/Library/Preferences/Logic/com.apple.logic.pro.cs
CREATE AND SHARE YOUR OWN TEMPLATES

The template we have provided is only the beginning of what you can do with
your hardware controller and Stylus RMX. We’ve provided a blank table for
you to document your own Controller Template creations. You will find it in
the User Template Tools folder, which is located inside the MIDI Learn
directory on your hard drive.

We encourage you to create your own templates, and then share them at the
Yahoo Spectrasonics User Group:

Enjoy using Stylus RMX with your microKONTROL.

Best regards,

The Spectrasonics Team
