STEEL COLUMN DESIGN: (as per IS 800:1984)
REV: 0
Notes: SHEET NO : 3 OF 6

1 This workbook has been developed in Microsoft Office Excel-2003 on Microsoft Windows XP Operating System.
This workbook may be used for the design of steel column subjected to combined axial compression & bi-axial bending as per the IS 800:1984,
2
which uses Allowable Stress Design.
3 Major axis for the column section is x-x and Minor axis for the column is y-y
4 This workbook is not applicable for design of built-up steel columns i.e. columns built out of either section+plates or entirely with plates.
5 This workbook is applicable for sections ISMB 100 to ISMB 600 & ISMC 75 to ISMC 400
Property table ( as per IS 808 : 1989 ) for the column section listed under point no. 5, is attached to the spreadsheet, therefore user is advised not to
6
input properties for the same.
Table for Maximum Permissible Bending stresses as per IS 800 Table 6.1-B Page no. 58, is linked to this workbook. Therefore user does not have to
7
input the same.
8 This workbook does not perform deflection check, however user is advised to check the deflection manually especially under heavy lateral loads.
9 User must verify the availability of sections before using, especially section MB350, MB550, MC350 & MC400.
10 User is advised to make a trial section first, to check the requirement of minimum area and section modulus.

Following colour key is used.
