Section A (36 marks)

1 Find the value of each of the following

7
(i) ( 4 )−2 (2)

3
(ii) 2435 (2)

2 (8𝑥 3 𝑦 2 )3
Simplify
(16𝑥𝑦)×(4𝑥 3 𝑦 8 ) (3)

3 A line L is parallel to the line y = -2x + 5 and passes through the point
P (2, -0.5). Find the equation of the line L.
Give your answer in the form ax + by + c = 0, where a, b and c are integers.
(3)

4 Solve the inequality 6x2 + x – 12 ≤ 0

(4)

5 Given that f(x) = x3 + ax + b.

and that f(3) = 14 and f(5) = 106, find the values of the constants a and b.
(4)

(4)

7 (i) Express √96 + √150 in the form a√𝑏 where a and b are integers.

(2)
3+3√7
(ii) Simplify 3− giving your answer in the form a + b√𝑐 where a, b
√7
and c are integers. (3)

8 Rearrange the equation 3x + 7y = z(5x – 2y) to make y the subject. (4)

9 Given that f(x) = (2x + 3)(x – 2)2

(i) Sketch the graph of y = f(x) indicating the values of x or y at the points
where the curve intersects an axis. (3)

(ii) Sketch the graph of y = f(x + 2) indicating the values of x or y at the

points where the curve intersects an axis. (2)
Section B (36 marks)

10 Given that f(x) = 2x2 – 10x + 10

.
(i) Express f(x) in the form a(x – b)2 + c. State the turning point of the
curve. (4)

(ii) Sketch the curve of y = f(x), marking the intersections with the axes
and the turning point. (4)

(iii) Solve the simultaneous equations y = 2x2 – 10x + 10 and y = 2x – 8.

Hence show that the line y = 2x – 8 is a tangent to the curve
y = 2x2 – 10x + 10. (5)

11 (i) A circle has equation x2 – 4x + y2 + 2y = 9

Find the centre of the circle and find the radius of the circle.
(4)

(ii) Another circle has centre (2, 2) and passes through the point A (5, 7).
Find the equation of this circle. Verify that the circle also passes through
the point B (-1, -3), and show that AB is a diameter of the circle. (5)

(iii) Find the equation of the perpendicular bisector of AB.

(3)

12 You are given that f(x) = x4 – 10x2 – 20x – 16.

(i) Show that x = 4 is a root of f(x) = 0, and express f(x) as the product of a (3)
linear factor and a cubic factor.

(ii) Hence, or otherwise, find another root of f(x) = 0. (2)

(iii) Factorise f(x), showing that f(x) = 0 has only 2 real roots. (6)
