Servicios de Agua y Drenaje de Monterrey I.P.D.

ANNUAL CONFERENCE AND EXPOSITION (ACE) 2018, SESSION POSTER

CONTEXT

BACKGROUND

During the last few decades the Modulation of Pressures projects have achieved a hydric
equilibrium in the potable water supply systems obtaining favorable results against the increasing
demand for water, dry seasons, and reduced yields and overall considering the environment
sustainability. In addition, this innovative technique provides great benefits like:

Deferred capital investments, reduction of corrective maintenance, energy savings, reduction of

residual water to be treated and improvements in the service to the customers. This has been
demonstrated successfully in different water companies worldwide, such is the case of the city
Coast Australia, a tangible example.(Girard 2007)

The Modulation of Pressures add great benefits since work hypotheses have been stablished like
deferred capital investments, reduction of corrective maintenance, energy savings, reduction of
residual water to be treated and improvements in the service to the customers. These work
hypotheses resulted to be a reality.

Many of the hydric problems that we encounter nowadays are the results of the legacy due to
Global Warming and the population’s culture; guarantee security of supply is what drives the
potable water system to work seeking the system’s greatest efficiency.

METODOLOGY
IMPLEMENTATION

The state of Nuevo Leon is located towards the north region of Mexico and the area for the case
of study is located within the Metropolitan Area of Monterrey, for this example 2 of the 53
Modulated Macro Sectors were taken into consideration, which are: The Macro Sector Sendero
and the Macro Sector Center. The Macro Sector Center is formed by 13 sectors and its point of
input and control is located at the street Sebastian Lerdo de Tejada with an initial average
consumption of 65.98 Ltr/s. Starting from the data obtained from the measurement and knowing
there is a discharge that exists at the end of the sector with a flow of 50 Ltr/s an internal
consumption of 87.44 Ltr/s is obtained. At the moment of carrying out the control and canceling
the sector’s discharge, the internal consumption is reduced and the minimal nocturnal flow is
minimized. The final performance of the sector reflects direct savings of 35.37 Ltr/s equivalent
to 40% in just one sector. The Macro Sector Sendero, located at the Central San Nicolas has its
input and control point at Avenue Nueva Escocia intersection with Carretera Colombia in San
Nicolas de los Garza N.L. The sector has an initial medium consumption of 56.952 Ltr/s (LPS) and
4,076 takes. Once the control was made, a reduction of 13.25 LPS was achieved in the medium
usage, recovering 23.39%, leaving a medium Q of 43.627 LPS.
