How can we avoid conflicts and create sustainable futures for all? Do we need to rethink the
relationship between people and territories? Should we focus on fears or on human resources?

For 3 days, artists and thinkers will meet in a public square in Palermo to open up a dialogue
about the cultural consequences of globalization. The team behind the Arts & Globalization
Platform will build a Global Garden in Piazza Magione in Palermo. We would be pleased to see
you and we invite you to give your contribution.

In the context of Manifesta 12, this collateral event will host an ambitious talk and performance
program and a number of installations, video projections and Special Projects with artists and
speakers from most parts of the world.

We will together with the public investigate and discuss issues related to our time:
How are artists and curators dealing with concepts such as migration, digitalization and mobility,
or lack of mobility? What role does the image and representation play in our digital world? How
does hyper-connectivity affect our cultures? What kind of strategies, narratives and methods can
artists and intellectuals deploy in the current phase of globalization?

Rikke Jørgensen, founder of the Arts & Globalization Platform and Valentina Gioia Levy, Italian co-
curator, say this about the program:

"We have been inspired by the term "Connectography" that was invented by the global strategist
Parag Khanna, who puts together two words: "connectivity" and "geography". He argues that
supply chains today prevail on national borders and interests, while mega urban conglomerates,
with their complex infrastructural systems that sometimes go beyond national boundaries, can
now compete, in terms of connectivity, even with nation-states. According to the Indian expert in
international relations, this trend is destined to further increase in the future. Khanna claims that
the world is going towards a new kind of hyper-connectivity that is unprecedented in the history
of human civilization. However, despite his optimistic attitude, we are witnessing an escalation of
fears connected to globalization, which are consequently stimulating a resurgence of nationalism,
xenophobic sentiments, and even economic protectionism. In many countries, voters are moving
towards conservative and populist political forces, prompting governments themselves to take
increasingly rigid measures to protect their borders in a more aggressive and intrusive way. But it
seems clear that globalization is moving towards a new phase anyway. What this phase will look
like is yet to be seen".

The Arts & Globalization Platform is a nomadic interdisciplinary platform, which was founded in
2015 after the Arts & Globalization Conference in Copenhagen. The platform was part of the 57th
Venice Biennale with an independent pavilion and is dedicated to transnational questions in
relation to globalization and contemporary culture.
