With the optoelectronic internal arc detection system, it is possible to locate arcing in a particular gas
compartment of metal-enclosed switchgears.
The diagnostic system can be used in both attended and in remote-controlled unattended high and
very high-voltage switchgear systems.
By virtue of discriminative protection, the system control centre is informed of the precise location of
the fault. With no risk of maloperation, transfer measures can be initiated. This accurate location of
the arc means that only short service interruptions occur in the event of such a fault. A high degree
of switchgear plant availability is ensured. There is also no need for conventional methods of fault
location, which might require considerably more effort.
The range of applications runs from kA arcing currents in solidly earthed neutral system to A currents
in compensated systems and to the detection of experimental flashovers in the course of a local
high-voltage test.
Arcs occurring are detected in the relevant gas compartment and individually, local signalled on the
unit. Floating contacts and a serial interface are available for the remote transmission.
The detection system is suitable for use in new substations and as well for retrofitting in existing
substations.
These above mentioned and documented diagnostic system G02 is suitable for use in isolated SF6
switchgear (60kV - 1000kV).

4. Function description
4.1.General
The optoelectronic arc detection system for SF6-insulated high and medium-voltage switchgear is
made up of the following three components.
a) Light sensor
b) Fibre-optic transmission link
c) Electronic unit (evaluation)
Electronic
fibre-optic cable
Light sensor
Using of passive components (light sensor and fibre-optic link) as sensor and transmission link in
the high-voltage switchgear installation has two advantages as follow:
The transient overvoltage across the enclosure when switching disconnectors and circuit-
breakers have no influence on the system.
4.2.Light Sensors
A light sensor is screw-connected gastight to the coupling of the high-voltage switchgear housing.
The optical phenomena occurring inside the switchgear are transmitted through the light pipe to
the light sensor, which is connected to the far end of the light pipe.
Attention: Work on the light sensors may only be allowed for trained technical staff.
4.3.Fibre-optic link
Transmission of the optical phenomena is optimized by the use of a polymer cable. Notable
features of the latter are simple plug connection and uncomplicated laying in the duct.
4.4.Electronic unit
4.4.1. Tasks
As shown in the block diagram, the electronic unit converts the light signals arriving from the
fibre-optic link into electrical signals, evaluates them and displays them with specific
reference to a particular gas compartment. In case of power supply failure, the signals are
stored.
4.4.2. Structure
The arc detection unit is made up of different electronic modules of the ES 902 (19“)
packaging system.
The receiver module (EB) converts the light into voltage signals, evaluates them and
transmits them to the indication and storage module.
The indication and storage module (ASB) displays the individual signals by means of LEDs and
stores these signals, even in the event of a power failure by means of latching relays.
The switching module (UB) performs the reset, test or operating functions on the unit. This
module also performs self-monitoring, self-testing and other functions which are described in
the following (4.4.5).
The test output module (PAB) produces various signal specimens with which the receiver
modules and the indication and storage modules are checked.
The processor module (CPU) monitors, evaluates and processes internal signals.
The remote switching module (FUB) permits remote implementation of functions S1, S2 and
S3 of the switching module.
The group signal module (SMB) indicates the following states via floating contacts:
The power supply module (DC/DC) produces the voltages required for the electronics.
The serial coupling module (CPU S) converts the information into a serial optical signal. This
signal can be transmitted by means of a connected fibre-optic cable ( IEC 103-5) ..
The coding module (CB) permits the output of a maximum of 40 single or group signals.
The single or group signals conditioned by the coding module are made available by means of
the relay module (RB).
With a jumper on the PCB you can choose of volatile contact or constant contact.
Self-test button
S1 By means of a changeover switch, the unit can be operated in two different modes:
a) "Operation“ mode
For the HV test on site, this mode of operation has special advantages: quick and
phase-accurate determination of flashovers results reduce testing and repair times.
The exact location of the flashover will be displayed at the ASB.
Caution: After the high voltage test is to switch back to the "Operation" mode (S1).
H3 By means of a switch on the module (actuation possible just after pulling out the
module), transmission of the indicated signals is prevented. Switching in this
position, inspection or testing work can be performed. The LED H3 indicates the
inspection state.
Caution: Switch off the power to the unit before pulling out the modules.
S3 After activating this button, self-testing is initiated, checking all receiver and
indication modules. Any fault determined is indicated as either a over function (H4)
or a under function (H5). An internal arc occurring during self-testing is detected by
the unit.
The self-test starts with test of lamps following by test of signals for each single
channel, confirming their correct functions. Finally the self-test controls over- and
under function for mode switch and mode indication.
H4 A over function is indicated after completion of the self-test in connection with the
appropriate channel of the indication and storage module (H4 also lights up).
The unit is then returned to the normal operation mode by reset the button S2.
6. Maintenance
6.1.General
The attenuation measurements (finding below at 6.3.) and test criteria for the electronics
(finding below at 6.4) respectively must be implemented every 5 years.
6.2.Light sensor
In case of the need of opening the gas compartment in the scope of SF6-insulated switchgear
maintenance, the light sensor should also be subjected to a visual inspection. If necessary, the
part of the light pipe which protrudes slightly into the gas compartment should be carefully
cleaned with a soft cloth.
Attenuation measurements in the transmission link must be performed by means of the test
components Libo-T2 and Libo-T3. The light source Libo-T2 and the attenuation test set Libo-T3
must be connected to the sensor side end and the electronics side end of the fibre-optic link
respectively. The descriptions of the test set form part of the appropriate operating instructions.
6.4.Electronic unit
The Libo-T4 set can be used to test 1 channel of a light receiver module. The individual test steps
are described in the operating instructions for Libo-T4.
7. Fault diagnosis
Check the power supply (power supply to the unit has failed or the unit has been switched
off).
Check the correct position of the switching module or the DC/DC transformers.
In the case of a fault at the DC/DC transformer, an appropriate fault signal is transmitted. In
this case, the LEDs (green) of the two DC/DC transformers must be checked. If one of the two
LEDs fails to light up, these DC/DC transformer concerned must be replaced with a new one.
If LED H1 (unit fault) lights up on the switching module and the DC/DC transformers (green
LEDs) are functional, the switching module must be replaced with a new one.
If a signal cannot be reset, either the receiver module or the indication module concerned
must be replaced.
