Title : >>>IVF Treatment & Procedure

In vitro fertilization(IVF)

What is IVF mean? In vitro fertilization is an process of fertilization where an egg is

combined with sperm outside the body(in vitro).
The process involves monitoring & stimulating a woman's ovulatory process, removing
an ovum or ova from the woman's ovaries & letting sperm fertilize them in a liquid in a
laboratory.
Fertilized egg zygote undergoes embryo culture for 3 –5 days, & is then transferred from
day 0 till day 5 or another woman's uterus, with the intention of establishing a
successful pregnancy.

IVF (In vitro fertilization) is a type of assisted reproductive technology used for
infertility treatment including gestational surrogacy, in which a fertilized egg is
implanted into a surrogate's uterus, & the resulting child is genetically unrelated to the
surrogate.

The first successful birth of a child after IVF treatment in 1978. Louise Brown (first
successful birth) was born as a result of natural cycle IVF where no stimulation was
made.
Success rates (IVF) :

Depending on the type of calculation used, this outcome may represent the number of
confirmed pregnancies, called the pregnancy rate, or the number of live births, called
the live birth rate.
IVF success rates, the percentage of all In vitro fertilization procedures which result in a
favorable outcome.
The success rate depends on variable factors such as lifestyle factors, maternal age,
embryo status, a cause of infertility, reproductive history.

Because of advances in reproductive technology, In vitro fertilization success rates are

substantially higher today than they were just a few years ago.

Live birth rate(IVF)

Live birth rate is the percentage of all In vitro fertilization cycles that lead to a live birth.
The rate does not include miscarriage/stillbirth & multiple-order births such as twins &
triplets are counted as one pregnancy.
A 2012 summary compiled by the Society for Reproductive Medicine which reports the
average IVF success rates in the United States per age group using non-donor eggs
compiled the following data

<35 35-37 38-40 41-42 >42

Pregnancy rate 46.7 37.8 29.7 19.8 8.6

Live birth rate 40.7 31.3 22.2 11.8 3.9

Predictors of success(IVF)

Main potential factors that influence pregnancy rates in In vitro fertilization have
been suggested to be maternal age, duration of infertility or subfertility, bFSH &
number of oocytes, all reflecting ovarian function. Optimal woman’s age is 23–39
years at a time of treatment.

1) The number of embryos transferred in the treatment cycle

2) Caffeine intake increases the success rate.

3) Tobacco smoking reduces the chances of In vitro fertilization producing a live

birth by 34% & increases the risk of an IVF pregnancy miscarrying by 30%.

4) Level of DNA fragmentation as measured e.g. by Comet assay, advanced

maternal age, & semen quality.

5) Some studies also suggest the autoimmune disease may also play a role in
decreasing IVF success rates by interfering with proper implantation of the
embryo after transfer.

6) The Factors of semen quality for the sperm provider.

7) Success with previous pregnancy & or live birth increases chances

In India, Each In vitro fertilization treatment cycle takes around
six weeks.
