Designed to be used from the first day of class, the book docs not assume any prior vocabulary knowledge. All vocabulary items ars glossed on first occurrence except borrowed words whose meanings are obvious to speakers of English. Borrowed words which have been combined witklndonesian prefixes or suffixes, those which have undergone radical change in the course of being ‘Indo- nesianized? and those whose meanings differ from what the English reader might expect are listed as new vocabulary items. The glossary at the end of the book follows the usual practice in readers of pro- viding ont, those English equivalents which are appropriate to the specific c:ntexts in which the items occur. The ¢ ossary is arranged in straight alphabesical order, a depar- ture from custom inIndonesian dictionaries, whereitems arenormally listed alphabetically. by ‘root form, all other forms based on the root being listed under it. A special problem in reading Indonesian newspapers is the extensive use of abbreviations for words, phrases and nanes of organizations. Coinage of new abbrevia- tions and she discarding or replacement of old ones is an active process, particularly in coverage of locat =>. xt5. An attempt has been made in preparing this volume to limit the selection of local news items to those containing only more or less stable abbrevia- Joseph M.
