PREFACE

First of all, the author wants to thank to God because of His guidance and
grace, the author can finish the English Final Report of Novel of “The Adventures
Of Tom Sawyer”. The author also wants to thank to his one and only English
teacher, Agustina Kurniawati Pinis that has taught the author since 2017 till now.
Her directions and ideas also led the author to do the author’s best for this final
report. The author also wants to thank to all of his friends that kindly helped and
supported him to finish this report.

This report is out of perfection. The author hopes that this report analysis of
“The Adventures Of Tom Sawyer” can be useful for the next grade and the juniors
who will also receive this kind of report for their final task. Eventually, the author
accepts all critics and advices. Thank you

ABSTRACT

Mischievous but good-natured Tom Sawyer lives life to the fullest. Join
Tom as he hunts for buried treasure, makes nighttime visits to the graveyard, and
explores the dark and secret caves near his home, turning even the mildest event
into an unforgettable adventure. The novel is talking about adventures as we can
find in our real life too that many people like an adventure activities. So, the author
interested to choose the novel “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer” to be analyzed.

To analyze this novel the author has purposes to fulfill the English
assignment. Besides, the author found the story of the novel was interesting.

To analyze this novel the author use library approach. To do it the author
read the novel, searching from the internet, and used dictionary and delivered the
analysis of the intrinsic elements of the novel in detail.

In conclusion, this novel is interesting to be analyzed. It is easy to be


understood because the author of the novel used simple language. It has colorful
hard-cover. But it lacks color pictures in the contents.

THE ANALYSIS

A. Summary
Tom Sawyer known mischievous and troublesome Aunt Polly with his
behavior that made Aunt Polly annoyed with Tom, although Tom naughty but
still dear Aunt Polly with Tom.
Tom liked the adventure when a when tom together with Huckleberry
Finn to the grave, without inadvertently they witnessed the murder Dr.
Robinson killed by Injun Joe.
After that, Injun Joe escaped, and Tom was terrified for her life. Terror
did not stop him from making trouble, though. While he and Huck treasure
hunting one night, they found that Injun Joe, disguised as a Spanish deaf-mute,
own property to bury. Huck agreed to spy Injun Joe to see where he buried the
treasure, while Tom went on a picnic with their class to McDougal cave.
During the Picnic , Tom and Becky were wandering and getting lost.
Injun Joe was planning to hurt Widow Douglas. Huck reported crimes,
and Injun Joe McDougal fled to the cave . Meanwhile, Tom and Becky were
missing for several days in the cave. Eventually they stumbled Injun Joe but
hiding before he saw them. Shortly thereafter, Tom figured out how to get out
of the cave with Becky. He told Judge Thatcher about Injun Joe inside, and the
city decided to close Injun Joe in the cave.
Then, Tom and Huck went back to the cave and found out where the
treasure were in store by Injun Joe.

B. Theme
This novel’s theme is about “Adventures” because the story tells about
Tom Sawyer’s life journey.

C. Characterizations
1. Tom sawyer as the main character
He was a tricky, romantic, brave, hesitate, confident, friendly.

“suddenly Tom got an idea.…” (p.13)

“I’m not afraid of anything….” (p.23)

“The next girl was Becky, Tom was trembling from head to toe”. (p.65)

“Tom hesitated and looked confused”. (p.75)

“As the days drifted on without any sign of Injun Joe, Tom felt less and less
scared”. (p.79)

“…Talking about their new gang and imagining all the wonderful
adventures they would have”. (p.145)

According to the evidences we can conclude that he was a tricky,


romantic, brave, hesitate, confident, friendly. The author stated that this
character tricky as he was rather cunning about other’s treasure. And brave
as he was not afraid of anything.

2. Aunt Polly as the minor character


She was an assertive, courteous.

“ …. She cried in disbelief, you must have a pound of sugar in there”.


(p.2)

“She passed by and said: good morning, Mrs. thatcher “. (p.121)

According to the sentences we can conclude that she was an


assertive, and courteous. The author stated that this character courteous as
she said good morning to Mrs.Thatcher.

3. Ben Rodger
He was an obstinate.

“... Ben started whistling again, this time even louder, but tom kept on
painting”. (p.5)

According to the text we can conclude that he was an obstinate. The


author stated that this character obstinate as he started whistling to Tom.

4. Mary
She was a helper.

“Mary helped Tom into his Sunday” (p.11)

According to the sentence we can conclude that she was a helper,


because she seemed like to help other people. For example, she helped Tom.

5. Mr. Walters
He was a patiently

“He listened patiently as the children stumbled thought their verses”.


(p.14)

According to the evidence we can conclude that he was patient. The


author stated that this character patiently as he listened patiently while the
children stumbled thought the verse.

6. Huckleberry Finn
He was a fearful, nervous.

“Huck stood there shaking badly. He knew just where he was: within five
feet of the path way leading to the widow Douglas house”. (p.112)

“Huck looked around nervously, that window can not too high, Tom”.
(p.138)

According to the statements we can conclude that he was a fearful,
and nervous. The author stated that this character is nervous as he said to
Tom that the window cannot too high.

7. Becky
She was busy, impolite.

“ …Who was busy with her studies”. (p.30)

“Becky was passing dobbin desk, she noticed that the key was in the lock
the next infant she had the book in her hands”. (p. 62)

According to the sentences we can conclude that she was busy, and
impolite. The author stated that this character busy because the novel told
us that Tom was looking at Becky while Becky was busy with her studies.

8. Muff potter
He was a grumpy.

“He cried angrily dropping his knife”. (p.45)

According to the evidence we can conclude that he was grumpy. The


author stated that this character grumpy because he cried and dropped his
knife.

9. Injun Joe
He was an irritable, revengeful.

“Joe grumbled a while before agreeing with his partner”. (p.100)

“Joe and his partner were planning to yet revenge on his widow by
robbing her or worse”. (p.113)

According to the proves we can conclude that he was an irritable,


and revengeful. The author stated that this character revengeful as he were
planning to revenge with his partner.

10. Mrs. Thatcher.
She was an affected.

“She could barely speak, she was still crying but now she was raining
tears of joy.” (p.130)

According to the statement we can conclude that she was an affected.


The author stated that this character affected as she could barely speak.

D. Setting

The story was happened in the bedroom, Aunt Polly’s house,


church, classroom, room, Cardiff Hill, Graveyard, Meadow lane, Jail,
River, Village, and Cave.

“Aunt Polly scrunched her eyes and carefully looked over the bedroom.”
(p.1)

“He looked at the fence in front of Aunt Polly house.” (p.3)

“at the door of the church, Tom saw Billy another friend.” (p.13)

“He saw that everyone was starting to ward the back of the classroom
at a chubby….” (p.14)

“Tom ran out of the room as the rest of his Sunday school….” (p.19)

” He ran on and on past Cardiff hill and behind.” (p.36)

“The boys were creeping through the tall grass of the graveyard.” (p.39)

“Becky walking down meadow lane.” (p.60)

” I wish we could get out of jail.” (p.69)

” The boys were back at Haunted House.” (p.89)

“look here, lad you go back up the river.” (p.93)

“early Monday afternoon, parties of weary men began to straggle back
into the village.” (p.122)

“Huck, it is the cave.” (p.133)

According to the evidences we can conclude that the story was


happened in the bedroom, Aunt Polly’s house, church, classroom, room,
Cardiff Hill, Graveyard, Meadow lane, Jail, River, Village, and Cave.

2. Time (s)

The story was happened on Saturday, Morning, Five minutes,


Sunday, Half an hour, Monday, Night, and Tuesday.

“The very next day was Saturday, and five summers Saturday it was.”

“The morning sky was bright and fresh and whole world brimmed with
life.” (p.3)
“Tom heard on Friday morning was a glad piece….” (p.107)
“Tom had not been at work five minutes when heard a sound he feared.”

“An agonizing half an hour later….” (p.10)
“Half an hour, the boys were creeping….” (p.39)
“Monday morning always made Tom miserable.” (p.20)

“Tuesday night came and the whole.”(p. 130)

According to the evidences the story was happened on Saturday, Morning,


Five minutes, Sunday, Half an hour, Monday, Night, and Tuesday. The

author stated that the time was on Sunday as Tom remembered that it was
Sunday.

E. Plot
The author told the story mix plot.

“Tom began slowly at first, but as he warmed to his story, his words flowed
more and more easily. In a little while, every sound ceased except for his own
voice, every eye was fixed only on him. And just after the doctor picked up the
board and hit muff potter and muff fell, Injun Joe jumped with the knife”. (p.77)

According to the evidence we can conclude that the author told the story
mix. Because the author told the story from beginning to end, and flashback in
chronological order.

F. Point of View
The author novel used third person omniscient point of view.

“Tom sawyer, we would not be alive two days if that got found out.” (p.69)

According to the evidence we can conclude that the author novel used
third person omniscient point of view. The author of the story described that
the author knew about the situations, the actions and the feelings of the
characters.

G. Language style
The author used Personification, and Hyperbole language style

“…as his mind raced wildly, hoping ….” (p.18-19)

“The night was quiet, but Tom could hear everything, From the creaking of the
wood rafters to the crickets chirping outside.” (p.38)

“the box! They were going to remove the treasure! Huck’s mind was racing.”
(p.111)

Based on the evidences above, it can be inferred that the novel used
personification language style. The author described the activities of human
being liked Tom’s Mind race wildly.

H. Moral Value
The moral value of the story is that we shall respect the older and do
not be afraid to do well.

CONCLUSION

After did the analysis. The author found that the story of the novel was quite
interesting. The author thought that the novel gave some influence too to the
author’s life.

For the truth the author is like to read the novel. Because this novel is
interesting to be analyzed, the novel has 15 chapters that are easy to be understood.
It is easy to be understood because the author of the novel used simple language. It
has colorful hard-cover. But it lacks color pictures in the contents.
