The student’s program of study which he prepares with the help of his program
committee, follows either of two plans, depending on his dissertation problem.

Dissertation: The Literature of England and America

A. Core Courses 9 units


1. A graduate research and bibliography course
2. History of the English Language
3. Readings in Middle English or equivalent

B. Areas (4) to be covered in the comprehensive examination 21


1. Dissertation area
2. Renaissance literature
3-4 Any two of the following:
a. English Language
b. Medieval Literature
c. 17th Century Literature
d. 18th Century Literature
e. 19th Century Literature
f. 20th Century Literature
g. American Literature

C. Electives 6
To be chosen from Comparative Literature (including
Third World Literature); Philosophy, Linguistics, and
Other related fields.

Total 36 units

D. Language Requirements: The student must pass a reading


Examination in two foreign languages – French, German
and/or other language/s approved by his dissertation
committee

NOTE:
1. At least five courses must be on the 300-level.
2. Except for the core courses, the student is relatively free to distribute the other 27
units as he wishes.

Dissertation: The literature of England, America or nay other country coming under Anglo-
American influence (provided that literature is in English) as seen in the total
framework of the culture which produced it.

B. Areas to be covered in the Comprehensive Examination

1. Dissertation Area 12
This examination will be given in two parts.
The student will be examined in (a) the literature of his
area and (b) the historical (including social and political)
and philosophical (including religious) contexts of this
literature.

Asian literature
Philippine literature
Third World literature

C. Electives 6
To be chosen from Philosophy, Sociology, and other
related social sciences
