During the last few decades the Modulation of Pressures projects have achieved a
hydric equilibrium in the potable water supply systems obtaining favorable results
against the increasing demand for water, dry seasons, and reduced yields and
overall considering the environment sustainability.

In addition, this innovative technique provides great benefits like:

Deferred capital investments, reduction of corrective maintenance, energy savings,

reduction of residual water to be treated and improvements in the service to the
customers. This has been demonstrated successfully in different water companies
worldwide.

Many of the hydric problems that we encounter nowadays are the results of the
legacy due to Global Warming and the population’s culture; guarantee security of
supply is what drives the potable water system to work seeking the system’s greatest
efficiency.

The state of Nuevo Leon is located towards the north region of Mexico and the area
for the case of study is located within the Metropolitan Area of Monterrey. Fifty three
Modulated Macro Sectors were installed and in this document two of them are
shown, which are: The Macro Sectors “Sendero” and “Centro’’. The Macro Sector
Center is formed by 13 sub-sectors and its point of input and control is located at the
Sebastian Lerdo de Tejada street, with an initial average consumption of 65.98 l/s.
Starting from the data obtained from the measurements and knowing there is a
discharge that exists at the end of the sector with a flow of 50 l/s an internal
consumption of 87.44 l/s is obtained. At the moment of carrying out the control and
canceling the sector’s discharge, the internal consumption is reduced and the
minimal nocturnal flow is minimized.

The final performance of the sector reflects direct savings of 35.37 l/s equivalents to
a 40%. The Macro Sector Sendero, located at the Central San Nicolas has its input
and control point at Avenue Nueva Escocia intersection with Carretera Colombia in
San Nicolas de los Garza N.L. The sector has an initial medium consumption of
56.952 l/s (l/s) and 4,076 takes. Once the control was made, a reduction of 13.25 l/s
was achieved in the medium usage, recovering 23.39%, leaving a medium Q of
43.627 l/s.

Through the simulation it was possible to project a continuous operation with

satisfactory quality results for the system users during the following 20 years. Also,
the correct sectorization of pressure zones where the pressures are guarantee by
using controllers which maintain the pressure at adequate levels for all users
regardless of their location. Inside the real and profound study of the demand and
consumption patterns, both spatially and temporally it is indispensable for the right
decision making and a reliable design. In addition, it will be included an oxidation
system to assure the potabilization in the system from a microbiology point of view.

Even though this technology has been applied in different cities around the world,
the Modulation of Pressures technique yields favorable results in cities with a steep
topography because it generates the right pressures for the modulation of pressure
and flow in the potable water distribution network.

A significant characteristic that draws attention to this investigation during its

implementation was the inconformity reaction from the population when they
noticed a decrease in the excess of water pressure in their homes. This perception
started to diminish when the benefits associated with the Modulation of Pressures
program were presented, and where it can be highlighted: economic savings in the
service and less damage to the hydraulic installations at their homes. It was
favorable to count with a sectorized distribution network limited to 500 average
users being this an intense dynamic labor since 1998 that still continues.

The use of this technique of Modulation of Pressures has been a case of success
regardless of the region’s adverse climate conditions, not having the sufficient
economic resources for these programs and the lack of awareness from the
community on how to use water efficiently.
