Psychometric Test
1. Test on Synonyms and Antonyms (40
questions, 20 minutes: Also Q’s on Sentence Completion).
2. Aptitude Test (32 questions, 40 minutes: General
Questions on Mathematics).
3. Critical Reasoning (30 Minutes: 3 Analysis
Paragraphs and 12 questions Relating them).
4. Psychometric Test (150 Questions, 30 minutes: only
if you qualify in the above tests).
Details about How to prepare for the above tests:

From GRE BARRON’S 12 Edition & upward…30-50% of them will
be repeated from previous TCS papers. Few Questions on Sentence
Completion were also there..for these also refer BARRON’S.
NOTE: During the Exam..you should be careful..because on the
computer screen the names Synonyms & Antonyms will be placed
side by side so that we may by mistake choose an antonym instead
of a synonym…so Be Careful..

2. Aptitude Test:

 6

This test will consist of very general questions…This is the easiest
section Compared to the Other Two. Almost 70-80% Questions will
be repeated from the Previous TCS Papers…just learn the method
from those papers. same model will be

given..(This happened almost all the times). If you have time

refer to any Aptitude book of your interest…it may be
R.S.AGARWAL or any Other……

Here Starts your Problems…30 Minutes…12 questions..don’t think

that there is a lot onTime..these will be somewhat tougher those
who has some touch with such kind..and will be Very Tough.. if you
haven’t seen this kind before..so,you should have some practice
relating this kind of questions…3 paragraphs will be given.. 3X4..
12 questions.. first 2 paragraphs will be some twisty questions…
like our arrangements questions… routes between cities.. like that…
and the last one will be on Data Interpretation…

You prepare Data Interpretation again from BARRON’S…. but the

th
remainingfrom R.S.AGARWAL-Reasoning…. Or from Barron’s 13
Edition

4.Psychometric Test:

This test comes up only if you qualify in the Aptitude test… This
test consists of 150 questions which we should answer in 30
minutes (of course, that much time is not required) Don’t think
that this test has no weightage.. there is filtering in this test
too… this test tests your psychology.. Remember among 150 many
questions were asked again & again in a

 7

variety of ways.. so don’t get trapped… be honest while attempting
this test.. choose whatyou’re your heart says.. it will take you
through the test..
This ends the Tests……

worry.. They will be Very supporting & Friendly.. First they ask us
to Introduce ourselves… then they’ll go into your project details…

project only…so be confident on every aspect of your project… then
you should have some basic knowledge on C language.

There will be some questions like “what is the o/p of this code?”,
“what are the errors in the code?” Like that… so be prepared for
all the basic concepts.. If needed you have to write some small
codes too.. at the end they will ask some general questios like

no technical questions… it just dwell into your inner self… so, be
confident and frank while facing this round…They generally ask
questions like “Tell about yourself?”, “Who r your role models?”,

is very to do Quantitative & logical section.

My interview was on 26th of November 2006.In my panel one gentleman. He

took the interview to me. My technical was around 30 minutes.

He asked the fallowing questions.

1. Tell me about your self?

18. Some questions on personal details..
19. Finally he offers me to ask any question you want. I ask one
question he explained very well.

Finally he was given shake hand and say wait out side. The interviewer
was quite impressed by my answers then I went outside with enormous
joy... because I answer all the questions, finally a man came and said you
are selected for next round. At that moment iam very happy.

M.R interview:

My interview was on 30th of November 2006In my M.R panel also one

gentleman I think interviewer was a project Manager. He was very friendly in
nature. Don’t think M.R is H.R round. It contains both tech &HR questions.
Be prepared technical questions very well. Prepared your project very well.

TCS PAPER ON 7th NOVEMBER AT CHENNAI

Hai friends,
The general placement procedure of TCS is:
1. Aptitude Test
2. Technical Interview
3. HR

APTITUDE ROUND (Online Test)

I was asked to appear for the TCS Recruitment process for the first
round. I was sent a username and password and asked to log on to the
website and fill in a few more details and then generate a Hall Ticket
(PDF) format. I took 2 prints of the hall ticket and 2 copies of my
resume along with me. A photo identification proof is also required
(Driving License / Voters ID / College ID card / Passport etc)

The Aptitude Test was conducted at SRS College of Multimedia,

th
Avadi, Chennai on 12 October. No. of students appeared: Almost 18,000
Since the test was an online test I might not be able to remember some of
the questions.. but heres what I can recall. The section actually consisted of
three sections namely

1) Verbal Section. (20 minutes)

 37

Ø 10 synonyms
Ø 10 antonyms
Ø 6 fill in blanks
Ø 6 reading comprehension
Prepare GRE words as much as possible. But don’t waste lot of time
going through this section. Prepare a high frequency GRE Barron’s word
that’s enough.

2) Aptitude (40 minutes)

Ø 38 questions
In this section almost all the questions were from previous year papers. So
for aptitude just practice previous year papers. That alone is enough. Be
thorough with all the aptitude questions and especially the method of doing.
Make sure that u get 35 questions correct out of the 38 questions.
3) Analytical & Critical Reasoning. (30 minutes)
Ø 3 passages

This section was exactly from GRE Barron’s (12th edition). The questions
order was also not changed. So MUG it up.

4) No Psychometric Test.
Try to get 85% in aptitude, 20% in Verbal and 20% in Analytical &
Critical Reasoning and then u can be confident that you will get short
listed in the first round.

TECHNICAL INTERVIEW
No. of students short listed for Technical Interview: 2937 The Technical
Interview was conducted at St.Joseph College of Engineering, Chennai on

 38

st
31 October. Getting short listed in the Technical Interview is quite an
uphill task. If u doesn’t know the answers for his questions jus be frank to
tell him that u don’t know. Don’t try to make up with the answer that
will create a bad impression on you. Before attending the technical round
prepare well about what you have mentioned in your resume.

Also prepare well the basics of C, OOPs Concepts, Data Structures, Core
Java, CPU Scheduling and Memory Management, S/W Engg., RDBMS Basics,
OSI Ref. Model.

If they ask you to write a program don’t say u don’t know, try writing it and
don’t worry about syntax and minor mistakes as don’t expect 100% perfection
from us. There were 20 panel of H.R for the technical interview. Majority of
the panel has 2 H.R and remaining has 1. I was send to a panel with single
H.R. These are the questions the interviewer asked me and my answers and
it went around 35min.

1. Market Yourself?

2. Tell me abt your project and the role u played?

Ans: I told him abt my project in detail. As my project was on ATM
n/w he asked me some questions in that and also abt TCP/IP.

3. What is polymorphism? Give examples?

Ans: A OOPs Concept. It’s the ability to take more than one form. I
told him abt Method Overloading and Method Overriding.

 39

4. What are constructor and destructor?

Ans: Constructors are member function with same name as that of
the class and are invoked automatically when an object is created.
Destructors are used to deallocate the resources allocated by the
object.

5. Write a program for Operator Overloading and factorial?

6. So u know Java? Write a program to swap two no. is java without

using temp. Variable?
Ans: When I was trying to write this program he asked me the logic
and proceeded to the next question

7. Do u know SDLC?
Ans: Ya. Software System Development Life Cycle

8. Explain me the phases in detail?

Ans: I told him abt the Requirement, Analysis & Design, Program,
Testing, Operation & Maintenance Phases. As I have mentioned S/W
Testing as my Elective subject he asked me what are the testing
methodologies to be considered before starting a Testing Process and
I told him the 8 testing methodologies.

9. What is CPU Scheduling? Types

Ans: It’s used to increase the CPU utilization. Types are preemptive
scheduling and non-preemptive scheduling.

 40

10. Do u know abt Data structures?
Ans: Yes. (Even though I didn’t mention anything abt data structures
in my resume he asked questions from that)

11. What is a Data Structures? Types

Ans: Way to organize data. Linear Data Structure consists of Arrays,

Linked Lists, Stack and Queue. Non- Linear Data Structure consisted
of Tree, Graph and Set.

12. What is diff between Array and Linked list?

Ans: Both are Linear Data Structures. Array is used to store
homogeneous data elements and memory is statically allocated. Linked
list contains no. of nodes each node contains the element and address
of next node and memory is dynamically allocated and so no wastage of
memory.

13. Explain abt Stack and Queue?

Ans: Stack is an ordered collection of data elements and where
insertion and deletion operation takes place in top of stack and it

Follows LIFO methodology. Insertion operation is called PUSH and

deletion is called POP. In Queue insertion takes in back end and

Deletion operation takes place in front end, it follows FIFO

methodology. Insertion operation is called QSTORE and deletion is
called QDELETE.

14. Write a program for POP operation in Stack?

 41

Ans: I told him it will take some time as the program is long and
asked him, I ll write the pseudo code is it enough ,sir(Actually I don’t
know to write a program but I know the logic and algorithm). He said
ok and I wrote the algorithm.

15. Why is sorting used?

Ans: Process of arranging a set of elements in increasing or
decreasing order.

16. Explain some Sorting methods?

Ans: I explained the logic of selection, insertion and bubble sorting.
The result of this technical interview was announced in 1hr and the HR
interview was rescheduled to another day due to lack of time.

HR INTERVIEW
No. of students short listed for HR Interview: 1256
The HR Interview was conducted at St.Joseph College of Engineering,
Chennai on 7th November. We generally tend to take the HR round less
seriously, but beware friends…It’s not any rule that they wont ask u
technical questions here. He was knowledgeable and friendly- but u r
subjected to lots of pressure during the whole interview. So be prepared to
handle REAL pressure. U can be subjected to pressure thru small gestures &
even a nod of head can make u pretty nervous at such times…… When I say
REALPRESSURE, I mean it……. (My tip to everyone: Friends, Be thoroughly
prepared. It’s not easy at all. But most importantly “be EXTREMELY
confident”, composed & have a smiling face almost always.).They are mainly
looking for good presence of mind

These are from my personal experience, besides ask the interviewer as many

 42

questions as u can. Show the interviewer u r dying 2 get in his organization.

1. What is your father doing?

2. Mention some point abt yourself not written in your bio-data?
3. Tell me about the school you studied?

4. Tell me about your project?

5. What is difference between C++ and Java?
Ans: Java is platform independent.
6. Why can’t you try job in Technopark? (as my native place was in kerala)
Ans: I tried some companies there but they are encouraging only kerala
based Candidates, those who have finished degree there.

Have u applied to any companies earlier? Why u were rejected?

Ans: Yes. Yes. They've not given me any proper feedback on why I
was rejected. So I don't know. Maybe there were better candidates
than me.

8. Where r u staying here?

9. Do you know what Quality management is?
Ans: It’s the management approach of an organization with the
participation of all members of that organization to achieve long term
success through customer satisfaction.

10. Tell some Quality systems?

Ans: I told him abt the ISO: 9001:2000 and ISO: 14000.
11. What are quality awards given to an S/W Company other than
these?

 43

Ans: Its ISO 9001:2000.Then he asked me other than that, when I
was thinking he asked me have u heard of CMM. Ya, Capability
Maturity Model for Software is to identify best practices useful in
helping them increase the maturity of their processes.

12. Will u switch over to any other company after joining TCS? If NO
then why?
Ans: I don't think so. As a rule, if I join a company, I'll stick with it
for long term. I think that switching companies often is not good for
my career.

13. In what situations would you leave a company?

Ans: When I see lack of growth and career advancement opportunities.

14. Do u have any question?

Ans: I asked him what you think of me, How was my performance? He
told me that Iwill know the result of my performance in 15 days (as
the result will be published in15 days) and also he told he can’t judge
me as he has not asked me technical side andI replied to him the hr
who interviewed me during the technical interview went through almost
all the subjects and if you want sir u can very well ask me
technicalquestions and am ready to answer. For this he told me he
likes my confidence.

15. How can I improve myself? For this he told me to read a lot of
books ifdon’t have a habit of reading frequently.

would like to share my experience with al of u so that it will b useful 4 u in
your preparation.
I attended the tcs off-campus in the month of october. I cleared the
written test

To clear the written test just go through

1.Gre Barrons(for verbal part)
2.Previous Papers(for aptitude part)
3.GRE Barron’s 12th edition (for reasoning part)

Verbal part:
My verbal part consisted of synonymns, antonyms, sentence completion and
reading comprehension

Synonyms and antonyms:

For this part go through Barrons complete wordlist(preferable) or u can go
for the wordlist tests which r given at the end of each wordlist.
Note: Read the instructions properly.Dont get confused with synonyms and

 45

antonyms. Many people lose marks in this by marking synonyms for antonyms
and vice-versa. Dats why im asking u to be careful.

Sentence completion:
Im sorry i don’t know any particular book frm where itis given but im sure
dats very easy u can easily get them correct.

Reading Comprehension:
This section is time taking. So does it at the end. For me only 1 passage was
given 5 times for al the 5 questions don’t get confused and don’t waste ur
time reading the same passage every time .I think this is given to test the
alertness and sharpness of the candidate. Im not sure whether u wil get only
frm this but it realy helps u increase speed n doing it fast . As we al know
time plays a very important role in clearing the test.
Note:For RC its better if u go through Barrons RC part

Aptitude:
Coming to aptitude part ,its enough if u go through the previous question
papers frm freshers world.

Reasoning:
th
Coming 2 reasoning just go through GRE Barrons 12 edition exclusively the
5 model tests. Dats enough 2 clear this section. My written test results were
announced by the end of october n I cleared the test.
Note:This is the stage where most of the candidates get filtered so prepare
wel n be cool .

 46

Interview Experience
My interview was scheduled in the month of November. I had 3 interviews.
1. Technical
2.Managerial (MR)
3.HR

My technical interview was scheduled in the evening. I was asked the

following questions.

1. Tell me abt urself

Note:This is the time where u need to come up with strengths and
achievements apart 4m educational qualifications and other technical skills.

2. what r favourite subjects(they wil ask most of d questions from fav

subject)
(As I said my fav sub 2 b java most of d questions were posed frm java)
3.Why is java unique?
4. What makes java different 4m other programming languages?
5. What r the differences between C and Java?
6. What is the concept of paging?
7. Why do we use the concept of swapping although it imposes overhead ?

8. Say one real time example for polymorphism

9.What r the types of algorithms used in operating systems?
(As i kept unix, dbms in my cv ,I was asked on these subjects. So plz b gud at
the subjects which u mention in ur resume especially d subject which u say as
ur fav subject)
10.what is d command dat is used to check the IP address in the command

 47

prompt?

11. He gave me 2 tables and asked to join dem using a query with som
conditions
12.Draw the internal structure of UNIX operating system

My tech interview lasted for nearly half-an-hour and I had to wait 4 the
results for around 20 minutes. In dat mood full of tension 5 minutes seem 2
be 5 hours. My results were announced n i cleared the tech round .I was
asked to come 4 MR and HR

Managerial Round:

On my day of MR I had to wait for nearly two-and-half hours bfore I was

called 4 my interview. It lasted 4 nearly 20 minutes. In MR they mainly
check body language, confidence level, problem solving ability

I was asked technical questions in my MR also. So MR was also elimination

round 4 us .So to get my result I had to wait 4 two hours

With full of tension. My results were announced and I was called for HR .
My HR lasted for nearly 15 minutes and I was asked to explain my project in
HR.

placed in one of the best IT companies in .

smile costs u nothing but fetches u a lot.

HARDWORK+CONFIDENCE = SUCCESS

I would like to thank fresher world for maintaining such a helpful site n

Especially those who take time 2 contribute papers with the intention dat
they might b useful 2 others. Really friends the papers that are posted by
our friends do play a very important n a useful role in getting thro’ the
selection process. Great job friends

Hi….with the name of GOD here I m Nizam writing these words which may
help you more and give confidence to clear the TCS interview….
First of all make urself clear that u r quite confident that u r going to enter
into TCS when u feel that u r real hard worker….
Online Aptitude test, Direct Technical Interview & Finally MR(Management
round)…Don’t confuse between MR and HR both r same…

The pattern will be as usual u r expecting…

Section 1) Verbal
Section 2) Quantitative
Section 3) Critical Reasoning
Section 3) Critical Reasoning

I got the questions only from these…So follow this and also if u try to solve

 49

by ur own it really consumes time more so practice wel here…

TCS PAPER ON 10th OCTOBER AT CHENNAI

Synonyms & Antonyms

Here I felt little difficult at this section as basically am poor in

vocabulary…..If u have very strong school background its enough…I think so…
any how i struggled my best for this section by reading thru same GRE… Here
the antonyms may be easy but the synonym only little difficult….

And also u don’t expect the High frequency words only wil come they r
changing ther questions frequently only at this section…So u cant expect from
previous paper alone but chances are also ther to com…So note this idea…
According to me u go thru….

Wordlists that starts with letter

 50

A,B,C,D,E,F,I,P,S,T,V(Definitely u will get 80% from this if u r thorow)
Don’t confuse between synonyms and antonyms differentiate and study so it
may helpful for both….

Sentence Completion

Here I felt easy and I filled correctly…U should not require any high
preparation for this… with presence of mind u can solve… Read the para by
giving contiguity and analyse the meaning so automatically ur mind feel which
option suits best and make it…If u cant then u don’t waste ur time more
here…jus mark as u feel….and go… They r giving paragraph of certain general
issuea like women rights…politics… like that so it wil be easy only….

Reading Comprehension

Atlast after doing the best leave the left to the almighty definitely u l get
shortlisted…Ya… ofcourse I accept the word ‘Hardwork never fails…..’As
I had written online test the results r displayed on the screen as soon as I
completed my whole test… Really I m happy when I got “Congratulations…! U
cleared first round” in the monitor…

Technical Interview

Try to answer more for each question threw over u…So he may satisfy that
realy u hav good technical ability…Ya…Of course what r al the things abov I
described I had done those….
The tech interview is nominally taks 20-30 mins…But for me he asked for
40mins… the reason was we talked some story abt my family peoples, etc…
When I finished my interview 100% I m satisfied that I wil b shorlisted for
MR… Yes, definitely while u r attending u also feel the same if u r satisfied

 51

urself def u wil get thru… Now here I admit wat r al the quest I got….

Interviewer was a gent with some 35 yrs age… I think so…

1)Conference starts as usual with common quest like introduce urself…and I
introduced myself in a good manner…which I already practiced…so u better
practice for expected quest…

2)Then he asked my project description…

Ya…I described all my projects clear and in brief manner…(and also don’t
describe in story…don’t go in depth of the project also…if u tel story def it
wil mak them running out of time so they cant put further quest to u…and ur
credit wil fall)

3)Then, he asked my programming skills….

I told C and C++.. I know java also but I didn’t said it bcos I m not very
much proficient in that and also currently java is in peak they may be
experts in java so we cant tackle all questions…

4)After that he asked me rate myself in C…

I rated 5 out of 10 then…

5) He asked me to put a simple swapping program without temp variable…

It is easy…
Jus this following stmts…
a=a+b
b=a-b
a=a-b
And at the same time this works only for integer range -32767 to 32767
if they ask lik this to swap 50,000 and 60,000..then u just use ^ operator in
the places of + operator it works for all range of values

 52

6) He asked me to speak out on the data types in C…?

Here I explained him all the data types and storage classes of C…

7) Then he asked me how much familiar in JAVA…?

I told 3 out of 10..the reason is even thou u know java very wel b cool an
gredit less urself bcos wat we studied is academic level…Wer as they r
currently ding projects in java so they may b very experts in java…So they
may ask som critical ques..So better note this…If u really feel tat u can ans

Section-3: Critical Reasoning

Questions 1 to 4: Small University and Large University problem of GRE

th
Barron’s 13 edition. This can be found in the model papers.
Three persons J.K,L belongs to Small University with some subjects
like English, Mathematics and Electronics assigned to them. M,N,O and P
belongs to small university and M deals Maths, N deals Psychology. O and P
have been assigned Latin. Then four questions based on this data. Its so
easy. (Not same data, but names of persons are same and pattern is also
same).

Even no need to do any arrangements with the given data to solve

 68

problems based on this. We need to just write down the given data in a
conventional form. That’s all. We can answer the questions very easily.

Questions 5 to 8: A group of 5 people A, B, C, D, E are there.

A knows Telugu and Hindi.

B knows Oriya and Malalayalam
C knows Telugu and Malayalam
D knows English and Oriya.
E, who is a native of Andhra Pradesh, also can speak Oriya.
(Not same assignments, but pattern is same)

Q1. If A and B need to communicate, whose help they should take. (Ans: C,
Since C know one language of A and another language of B….. like this)

Q2. Among all of these languages, what are the languages that are known to
many people? (Ans: Telugu-3 and Oriya-3)
The questions are like that. Even there is no need to do any
arrangements are also. So, no need to worry about this section also.

Questions 9 to 12: Sorry. Third passage I didn’t remember it. Even I didn’t
get time to see it. But it seems to be some what difficult. I didn’t have time
to answer this question, so I left it.

Also I want to share a few more details with all of you regarding the
TCS test. I thought of it to be online test. But because it was a large
recruitment drive, they are not capable of conducting online test for that
many numbers of aspirants. It was manual test.

And coming to the test, for verbal section, GRE Barron’s of any edition is

 69

th th
enough. And for Critical Reasoning, Barron’s 12 or 13 is enough. Then
finally, for Quantitative section, the same problems will be given with only
changes to the data.

th
These problems can be solved by even a 7 class student also. But the thing
here is the Time Factor. How fast we are able to do them is the thing here.
The same problems can be given every time. So don’t neglect to solve each
and every problem of previous papers, if you want to crack TCS test. After
that, try to improve the speed ving the problems

If you do so, I’m sure that you’ll be half way into TCS, one of the top IT
firm in the world.
