Blake Boles - What does it mean to be educated? Self-Directed, 17th May, 2017. https://www.self-
directed.org/tp/what-does-it-mean-to-be-educated/
In Blake Boles’ article, he defines education through the perspectives of different educators. They all take
a negative approach to the subject “what does it mean to be educated?”. Education is viewed as a waste of
time, and how a diploma is not an impressive achievement. The author shares his own experiences
growing up with a certain view on education, and as he grew older, how that view changed.

TheHuffingtonPost.com, 25 Mar. 2017, www.huffingtonpost.com/scott-carlin/why-we-need-
education-for_b_9543390.html.
The author goes into detail on how education is a burden in middle eastern countries. In this case, children
are not to blame for their lack of education. This is an example of how an environment can affect the
potential growth of children as citizens and students. s

Chapter 13: “Doing Better” focuses on the bad aspects of education in the United States and how
education differs between countries, including on how other countries “do it better.” One flaw that the
author states is the habit the United States has, to give students standardized tests on skills they acquired
throughout a whole school year. Their argument is that those tests only damage the possible thinking
capabilities of children. Schools are lacking to reach the goal of preparing young students to be good
citizens. (Not exactly about what it means to be educated, but this chapter digs deep into flaws that
contribute to faulty education [meaning even less educated people.])

People are convinced that Education is the pathway to success for their children. It is the norm in our
society. Since education is thrown at kids at an early age, it becomes a lifestyle for years. This article talks
about what a parent expects from their child attending school. Parents see school as a place that’s better to
throw your kids for a whole day, instead of being on the streets! For some parents it’s “Just what you
gotta do”
Ogden, Kirsten:
Professor Ogden opened up about the changed in family treatment once she graduated college. Saying
that she felt like her family acted a certain way because she had a college degree. (putting her on a
pedestal). This shows how education can cause changes in everyday life, even at home.

The American theoretical linguist, cognitive scientist and philosopher gives his view on what it means to
be educated. He says the meaning of being educated is being able to investigate and construct without an
external resource.
