Q1.What is master and slave specifications.

ARe they really needed to use into analysis to get

correct results?

Ans: Master Slave is a way to use mathematical equations to simulate a rigid connection for one
or more degrees of freedom between 2 points. Examples are pedestal beneath a column, floor
slab (infinite inplane stiffness), a composite roof deck (infinite inplane stiffness), etc. In these
cases, the underlying entity which produces that high stiffness is substituted with the master-
slave relationship and hence makes for a smaller model.

See Help-Contents-Application Examples-Example 26.

Q2: We have in STAADPRO for the analysis of LATERAL LOADS(wind or earthquake loads)
equivalent static method(ESM), response spectrum and time history methods.
My doubt is under which case the MASTER SLAVE JOINT is to be made use of?
That is if we model a frame with plate element as slab is it necessary to use the Master-slave or
is it necessary for both the ESM and RSA methods used?

Ans: In building type structures, the floor and roof slabs have a very high stiffness for lateral
movements. Modeling those slabs using elements would mean a large number of elements
would be needed if there are many floors. To reduce the size of the model, the master-slave
feature can be used to rigidly link the various joints of the respective floors for lateral
displacements (Delta-X and Delta-Z) and rotation about the vertical axis (Theta-Y). While the
inplane stiffness of the slabs is considered, their bending stiffness is set to zero for the analysis.
So, master-slave is a tool to create a smaller model by avoiding using hundreds of plate
elements to represent the slabs in the structure.
If you have already modeled the slab using plate elements, there is no need to use master-
slave.

Q3. Is it necessary to use it in ESM if we modeled the structure with no plate elements?
Or is it to be used for RSM.i.e for Dynamic Analysis?

Ans:The decision to use master-slave should be dictated not by whether it is an ESM or RSM,
but by whether there are entities in your structure which have a condition that requires the use
of master-slave.
If the structure has a slab, and, if you want to consider their stffness, and, if you have
decided not to use plate elements, then, master-slave would be necessary. This is true
whether the analysis is static or dynamic.
