Q. No. Question Description MM

1 A 3-m-high and 5-m-wide wall consists of long 16-cm x22-cm cross 15
section horizontal bricks (k = 0.72 W/m • °C) separated by 3-cm-thick
plaster layers (k = 0.22 W/m • °C). There are also 2-cm-thick plaster
layers on each side of the brick and a 3-cm-thick rigid foam (k =0.026
W/m • °C) on the inner side of the wall, as shown in Fig. The indoor and
the outdoor temperatures are 20°C and -10°C, and the convection heat
transfer coefficients on the inner and the outer sides are hl =10 W/m2 -
°C and h2 =25 W/m-' °C, respectively. Assuming one-dimensional heat
transfer and disregarding radiation, determine the rate of heat transfer
through the wall.

10
spaced logic chips, each dissipating 0.12 W. If the heat transfer from the
back surface of the board is negligible, determine (a) the amount of heat
this circuit board dissipates during a 10-hour period, in kWh, and (b) the
heat flux on the surface of the circuit board, in W/m 2.

to store iced water at T,„1 = 0°C. The tank is located in a room whose temperature is T4,2 =22°C. The
walls of the room are also at 22°C. The outer surface of the tank is black and heat transfer between
the outer surface of the tank and the surroundings is by natural convection and radiation. The
convection heat transfer coefficients at the inner and the outer surfaces of the tank are h1=80 W/m 2
•°C and h2 =10 W/m 2 °C, respectively. Determine (a)
the rate of heat transfer to the iced water in the
tank and (b) the amount of ice at 0°C that melts during a 24-h period. The thermal conductivity of
steel is given to be k =15 W/m • °C. The heat of fusion of water at atmospheric pressure is
h4=333.7
kJ/kg. The outer surface of the tank is black and thus its emissivity is 1.

3 a) Obtain a relation for the fin efficiency for a fin of constant cross-
sectional area Ac, perimeter p, length L, and thermal conductivity k
exposed to convection to a medium at T, with a heat transfer coefficient
h. Assume the fins are sufficiently long so that the temperature of the fin
at the tip is nearly T.. Take the temperature of the fin at the base to be
Tb and neglect heat transfer from the fin tips. Simplify the relation for

b) Saturated steam at 30°C condenses on the outside of a 4-cm-outer- -

diameter, 2-m-long vertical tube. The temperature of the tube is

maintained at 20°C by the cooling water.
Determine L
(a) the rate of heat transfer from the steam to the cooling water,
(b) the rate of condensation of steam, and
(c) the approximate thickness of the liquid film at the bottom of
the tube.
Assuming wavy-laminar flow, the relations given in Q4 can be used to
determine Reynolds number and heat transfer coefficient. Fig 5

x6.2 cm wide polished aluminum heat sink (emissivity = 0.03) to its top surface. The heat sink has
seven fins, which are 5 mm high, 2 mm thick, and 10 cm long. A fan blows air at 25°C parallel to the
passages between the fins. The heat sink is to dissipate 20 W of heat and the base temperature of the
heat sink is not to exceed 60°C. Assuming the fins and the base plate to be nearly isothermal and the
radiation heat transfer to be negligible,
(a) Determine the minimum free-stream velocity the fan needs to supply to avoid overheating.
(b) Repeat it, assuming the heat sink to be black-anodized and thus to have an effective emissivity
of 0.90. Note that in radiation calculations the base area (10 cm x 6.2 cm) is to be used, not
the total surface area.
