Universal Design for Learning (UDL): The Universal Design for Learning principles could be addressed to
extend and support the learning experiences for all students because the what, the how and the why of
learning are all explored in the online technology game selected for the students. They will use the laptop to
go online answer drill and practice questions, print them out on worksheets, cut the answers out and hurry to
the back of the room to place the names in the appropriate places.
-They explore “what” will be addressed/Spelling by using technology.
-They explore “how” by actually engaging in hands-on activities, using manipulatives and physical tangible
objects, which help students make “real-world” sense of the task.
-They also investigate the “why”, by realizing that one of the key elements to becoming a productive citizen
and member of society is to acquire the basic spelling and computer skills.

Lesson idea implementation:

As I address the standards, will listen attentively and be nudged to write down some of the main points to
think about. The teacher will act mainly as the facilitator. I will introduce the project by bringing into the
classroom my “hook”, as a way to lure their minds into the lesson and make it exciting. I will bring in a huge
brightly-colored picture of a computer with the words, “SPELLING IS FUN, YAYYYYY”, in huge letters with
smiley faces all around it and also some miniature laptops they could hold in their hands. The complete lesson
plan will take about 45 minutes.
Student learning will be assessed in the form of formative and summative worksheet “drill and practice”
activities that I will have printed out for them. The final product will be used to inform/differentiate instruction
by showing all the students at the end of the lesson, how being allowed to move around the room, hurrying to
the back, to print out and place their appropriate answers, was very strategic, being that the class has 4
students who have ADHD and tend to have trouble sitting still. They greatly benefited from not having to sit
still the whole time. They were all obviously, less fidgety and were able to learn a lot more. That allowed me to
differentiate the instruction by fashioning it around my prior knowledge of having 4 students diagnosed with

ADHD. I will you extend the student learning to a higher learning level by allowing the students to,
afterwards, work on two more worksheets, on which they will have practice. I will conclude the lesson by
passing out the additional worksheets as a form of summative assessment and lesson extension and finish up
with a 10-minute closure time in which we will all gather at the back of the room, in circle time, and have a
whole-class, group discussion over the lesson, how and what students felt and learned from it and take any
remaining questions. I will provide feedback to students about their work by passing out the grades at the end
of the class, but they will have also already had some formative assessment mini-quiz grades from the results
from the summative drill and practice activities.

Reflective Practice: After designing this lesson idea, I feel the activities I created could impact student learning
by providing valuable evidence that prior and built knowledge are very effective in the formulation of effective
strategies in the classroom. Also, it is always very important for instructors to remember that the over-arching
theme to what we’re doing, focuses specifically on “inclusion”. Creating and differentiating lesson planning to
encompass tools and activities needed for all students, including LD and EL students is the key. You may have
designed this idea as an introductory activity to a unit of study. With that in mind, what could be done to
further extend the lesson? To further extend the lesson, I printed out additional drill and practice activity
sheets for the students to take home and work on with their parents. This will also give the parents the
opportunity to engage the students in their activity time, which is very important. Though learning to spell by
using technology, the students are at the same time being assisted by the incorporation of UDL tools and
strategies. One strategy I would institute to further enhance the project would be the pedal exerciser. Being
that several of the students had been previously diagnosed with ADHD, were fidgety and did not prefer to sit
still in one spot, the pedal exerciser machine would be the perfect add-on. It would allow them the movement
they need in order to allow them to learn more efficiently.
