ConocoPhillips 2012 FEL-0 Projects

Project #2 (PWR – 810/089-11) – Improve Reliability of DU-19 & DU-20

Estimate Basis

Project Narative Summary

This project seeks to improve the reliability of Secondary Column Resid Pumps DU-
19/20 from recurring seal leaks and eliminate the requirement to throttle the pump
discharge valves to minimize downstream operating pressure and protect exchangers DU-
9 through 14 from exceeding shellside design pressure. This situation occurs when both
pumps are required to be in operation in order to get the warm resid to the Vacuum
Flasher at crude rates exceeding 110 MBPD.

Solutions under consideration to improve the operation include:

1. Relocation of Warm Resid Control Valve 16FC358 to upstream of the exchanger
train
2. Add a pump spillback line
3. Relocate the crossover line to the Hot Resid Control Valve FC-810
4. Replace one of the existing pumps with a pump sized to handle the higher rate
operation while not exceeding the maximum operating pressures for the
exchangers
Misc. Items
5. Add a PT on the suction of both Pumps DU-19 and DU-20 downstream of the
strainers to be readable on the DCS to allow monitoring of the pump suction
pressure.
6. Replace the 6” gate valve on the crossover line to Hot Residue Control Valve FC-
810 with a 6” globe valve to improve the operability of FV-810

Project Requirements
Items 1, 2, 4, 5 & 6 above are to be estimated for FEL-0 and should be itemized
separately.

Item 1:
See P&IDs C-Y-410-1060 & 1066 for details of moving FV358 to upstream of
Exchanger DU-5052. Some demo and new piping required.

Item 2:
Piping Requirements
 50’ (est) of 4” piping (Class 261N2) to spillback a portion of the pump discharge
to the bottom of the Secondary Tower or alternatively to the common suction line
of the pumps. Spillback to the tower bottoms is preferred if there is an available
nozzle.
Instrumentation
 4” control valve on spill back line to open at high pump discharge pressure with
associated instrumentation (see P&ID C-410-Y-1060 for details)

Item 4:
Equipment:
New pump to replace DU-19 or DU-20meet the following nominal requirements:
Capacity - 2400 gpm
Δ P, psi - 350
Fluid Conditions-
Temp, °F - 675
Sp.G. - 0.79
Calculated BHP @ 85% efficiency – 600 (rounded up from 577)

Item 5:
Instrumentation:
Two new pressure monitors on the suction of each pump with readout on the DCS
(PT/PY/PI). (See P&ID C-410-&-1060)

Item 6:
Piping Equipment:
New 6” globe valve (full port) to replace existing 6” gate valve (See P&ID C-410-Y-
1060)
