CAD Drawing Standards

GP 01-01-02

Scope
[I] This Global Practice (GP) contains requirements governing the following major areas:
1) The type, content, and structure of all computer aided drafting (CAD) drawings to be supplied as part
of the project documents.
2) The content of a Drawing Index listing all CAD and other drawings supplied as part of the project
documentation.

Copyright Waiver
ExxonMobil Development Company and ExxonMobil Pipeline Company hereby license the use of ExxonMobil Engineering Practices System (EMEPS) Global Practices (GPs) for
use by any ExxonMobil division, subsidiary, or more-than-50%-owned affiliate. The GPs may be downloaded and modified as necessary for project and affiliate use. Written
permission from ExxonMobil Development Company or ExxonMobil Pipeline Company is not required. However, any modified GPs must be renumbered to a project-specific or
affiliate-specific number to distinguish them from the GPs on the EMEPS web site. ExxonMobil operated joint ventures may utilize GPs to create project-specific or location-specific
specifications. It is the responsibility of individual affiliate or joint venture to ensure that the use of GPs and their derivatives is limited to joint venture related business and not
disclosed or used outside the JV without appropriate EM management approval.

1. Required References
This Section lists the Practices, codes, standards, specifications, and publications that shall be used with
this document. Unless otherwise specified herein, use the latest edition.

1.1. Global Practices–ExxonMobil Engineering Practices

GP 01-01-01 Drawings, Diagrams, and Line Lists

2. Definitions
Term [I] Description

AutoCAD Refers to the computer aided drafting package by Autodesk Inc.

AutoCAD is a registered trademark of Autodesk Inc.
Intergraph Refers to the plant design system/computer aided drafting software
packages provided by the Intergraph Corporation.
Layering Refers specifically to the manner in which the CAD system separates
drawing information into separate groups. Properties may be defined for
these groups; such groups may be manipulated in the CAD system
drawing files.

3. Computer Aided Drafting File Format

1) [*] [I] Drawings to be supplied in CAD format are listed in Table 1. This Table is a list of the
minimum required drawing types (see the Job Specification for any additional required drawing
types).

2) [*] [I] Information to be supplied as part of the Job Specification is given in Table 2.

Table 2: Information to be Supplied as Part of Job Specification

Information Possible Options

Drawing size Imperial or metric standards

Text styles and fonts Standard AutoCAD or Intergraph fonts only
Minimum text height 0.1 in. or 2.5 mm
CAD file type DOS, UNIX, NT etc.

3) [A] [I] Computer aided drafting files shall be provided in native AutoCAD DWG format, based on
Release 12, except where Item (5 of this Section applies. Drawings may be provided based on later
releases of the AutoCAD product or on a non-AutoCAD product with approval by Owner's Engineer.
In the case where CAD drawings originate in a non-AutoCAD system, Contractor shall demonstrate
that conversion to AutoCAD DWG format is 100 percent effective in retaining the drawing content,
except where Item (5 of this Section applies.
4) [A] [I] Intermediate drawing formats such as DXF are not acceptable unless agreed as part of the Job
Specification.
5) [A] [I] For Company sites that currently use Intergraph CAD systems, files may be provided in an
Intergraph format as agreed with Owner's Engineer and documented as part of the Job Specification.

4. Symbol Sets
[I] Drawing symbol sets are defined in GP 01-01-01. Line weights not covered by GP 01-01-01 shall be
covered in this GP.

5. Naming Conventions
[I] Naming conventions for drawings, process units, equipment, and instrumentation shall follow GP 01-
01-01.

6. Layering Conventions
1) [*] [I] Computer aided drafting files shall be prepared with the information layered according to the
conventions given for the type of drawing in Table 3 of this GP, or as amended by the Job
Specification.
2) [*] [I] Layer names shall follow the standard names given in Table 3 of this GP, or as amended by the
Job Specification.
3) [A] [I] The layering standard provides separate layers for standard text and title blocks, and for most
drawing standard line weights and types. These layers typically have default colors and default line
types. Only standard AutoCAD line types and default colors shall be used unless other line types and
default colors are agreed to with Owner's Engineer and documented as part of the Job Specification.
4) [I] Where the original source drawing system is not AutoCAD, Contractor shall demonstrate that the
conversion to AutoCAD DWG files will produce the correct layering as required by this GP with the
exception of Item (5) below.
5) [A] [I] If the original drawing system is Intergraph, and the user's system is a compatible Intergraph
system; then the requirement for conversion to AutoCAD DWG files may be waived by Owner's
Engineer as part of the Job Specification.

Attachment: Purpose Code Definitions

Code Description

* Assigned to paragraphs that require the Owner's Engineer to provide additional information or
make a decision.
A Assigned to paragraphs that require approval from the Owner's Engineer before the work may
proceed or the design is finalized.
C Assigned to paragraphs whose primary purpose is reduced costs. Reduced cost in this context
refers to initial investment cost and does not include life cycle cost considerations. Life cycle
cost considerations are captured under reliability, maintainability, or operability purpose codes.
E Assigned to paragraphs whose primary purpose is driven by environmental considerations.
Environmental considerations typically include specifications intended to protect against
emissions/leakage to the air, water, and/or soil. Deviations from the specifications contained in
such paragraphs require formal review and approval according to local environmental policy.
I Assigned to paragraphs that provide only clarifying information, such as Scope statements,
definitions of terms, etc.
M Assigned to paragraphs whose primary purpose is to provide for maintainability of equipment
or systems. Maintainability provisions are those that facilitate the performance of maintenance
on equipment/systems either during downtimes or during onstream operations.
O Assigned to paragraphs whose primary purpose is to assure operability of equipment or
systems. Operability is the ability of the equipment/system to perform satisfactorily even
though conditions are off-design, such as during start-ups, process swings, subcomponent
malfunction, etc.
R Assigned to paragraphs whose primary purpose is to improve or assure the reliability of
equipment or systems. Reliability is a measure of the ability of equipment/systems to operate
without malfunction or failure between planned maintenance interventions.
S Assigned to paragraphs containing specifications/guidance where the primary purpose is the
avoidance of incidents impacting personnel safety, operational safety, and the public in general
and/or involving responses to emergency situations. Any deviation from the specifications
contained in such designated paragraphs requires formal review and approval according to
local safety policy.
Personnel Safety: Refers to incident-related personnel injuries or illness, e.g., burns, cuts,
abrasions, inhalation of or exposure to dangerous substances, etc., that
could result in medical treatment, restricted work, lost-time incidents, or
fatalities.
Operational Refers to the prevention and control of process releases, fires, and/or
Safety: explosions that could result in damage to equipment, process disruption,
or personnel injury or illness.
