Unit 2: Activity 2
April 27, 2018
Faith Winn Wood
There are many factors to take into consideration, but I think the three most important are what I’m
going to be happy doing, what has the least amount of schooling so I’m not in debt until I’m 35, and
what will actually make me money after debt of schooling. All these jobs would make me happy, but to
be fully happy would not be worrying about finances. Another factor before everything is what
educational requirements I have to become these jobs. In order to become a veterinarian you need
biology and chemistry. In regards to chemistry it is something I just cant do. Which leaves me with the
following; art therapist, paramedic, and funeral home director. The next factor would be the schooling
and the money the job makes. Funeral home directors make an average salary of 66 000 a year and take
3-4 years to become. Art therapist makes a low of 44 000 a year and will take 4-6 years to become.
Paramedics make 89 000 a year and only 3 years to complete. My main concern is the cost of schooling
subtracting from the money I’ll actually be making. An average semester at a college or university is $7
000 to $10 000. If I become an art therapist I wont be making real money for at least 7-8 years if I’m
lucky after taxes and finding a real job in the field early enough. Funeral Home directors make more and
are less schooling, but demand for them are low and the need for funeral home directors are decreasing
because less and less people are having services and burying their loved ones. It’s to expensive, which is
impacting the funeral business, declining, and putting people out of business. Finally it comes down to a
Paramedic. The schooling is three years, which is very short compared to majority of jobs. I’m likely to
find work not long after leaving college. It’s also college which allows me to have a higher chance of
achieving higher expectations. It allows to me to come out of school with less debt and quickly get rid of
my debt within 5 years. The last factor is my happiness. All jobs I feel strongly about and like so it
basically comes down to which would make me the opt most happy. Being a funeral home director
would involve a lot of death, which I could deal with because it’s not my grief, but I’m also sure it would
take a lot out of my physical energy. I would be helping people, but as an art therapist or a paramedic I
could say I’ve saved someone mentally or physically. As a funeral home director I could only help
someone heal and knowing the kind of person I am I’d be sad that I cant do more for those people. As a
paramedic I feel I’d get the most satisfaction from helping that person because most likely I saved them
from a life or death situation. As a result, I believe a paramedic would be the job for me. I value life, I
always wanted to go into some form of help with medicine and helping people or animals. It’s quick
work, its fast schooling (something that is very important to me), and it makes a decent amount of
money if I decided to have a family I alone would be well off. It does show me how I’m changing as a
person and what I truly value, but I do think this closer to what I want to be than as to what I want to be
when I entered high school. There’s still a lot to consider and my life keeps changing, but right now in
my life this seems like the career for me. I have dreams to make a difference and be successful, which is
happiness and supporting myself. In which this occupation has both qualities.
