1 Introduction
1.1 Scope
This Operational Instruction describes the procedure to replace a Base Station
Controller (BSC) Network Interface Ethernet (NWI-E) in an operational BSC,
and configure the new BSC NWI-E.
This Operational Instruction may end with consulting next level of maintenance.
2 Procedure
2.1 Prerequisites
2.1.1 Conditions
The following conditions must apply before this procedure can be completed:
2.1.2 Data
The following data must be known to complete this procedure:
• User name and password to use when logging into the BSC NWI-E to
be replaced.
• Parameter file to use with the Python script BSC NWI-E Configuration File
Compiler
• Network cable with RJ45 and DensiShield connectors (TSR 491 603 or
equivalent)
• Environment where scripts for Python, version 2.5, 2.6 or 2.7, can be
executed
2.2 Actions
Is It Possible to Connect Cable and Log On?
1. Connect the serial console cable, TSR 491 616 or equivalent, from your PC
to the serial management port of the BSC NWI-E that is to be replaced.
Note: For more information how to configure the terminal settings see
Additional Information, Section 3.3 on page 19.

No
Go to Step 8.

6. Copy the printout received in Step 5 and save it in a file on your PC.
7. Go to Step 14.
Yes
Go to Step 9.
No
Go to Step 11.
9. Acquire the backup configuration for the BSC NWI-E that is to be replaced.
11. Fill in the parameter file for the BSC using the file Parameter File Template
as a template.
12. Run the script BSC NWI-E Configuration File Compiler and use the file
edited in Step 11 as input to the script.
Note: For more information how to run the script see Additional
Information, Section 3.2 on page 19.
13. If the BSC NWI-E to be replaced is side A, the configuration file to use is
called sideA, otherwise use the file called sideB.
14.
Warning!
Connecting and disconnecting cables without wearing a grounding wrist
strap can damage equipment.
15.
Warning!
Removing or inserting a board without wearing a grounding wrist strap can
damage equipment.
16. Configure the computer to use the IP address 192.168.255.3/24. Use the
default gateway 192.168.255.1.
17. Connect the serial console cable, TSR 491 616 or equivalent, between the
replacement BSC NWI-E and the computer.
18. Connect the network cable, TSR 491 603 or equivalent, between the
replacement BSC NWI-E and the computer. Use the Ethernet management
port on the BSC NWI-E for the network cable.
19. Use the terminal emulation software to log on to the replacement BSC
NWI-E.
Note: If prompted, accept the default values on the questions following the
logon except for the question "Would you like unconfigured
ports to be turned off by default? [y/N]:" where
you answer y.
20. Restore the configuration to factory default on the replacement BSC NWI-E.
Note: The replacement BSC NWI-E reboots and you have to log on
again. Even if the replacement BSC NWI-E asked the initial setup
questions in the previous step we perform this step to make sure
that the BSC NWI-E is back to factory default. This is also the
reason why the next step might be a repeat of the previous step.
Note: If prompted, accept the default values on the questions following the
logon except for the question "Would you like unconfigured
ports to be turned off by default? [y/N]:" where
you answer y.
Note: The Mgmt VLAN is not routed so there are no address conflicts
even though both BSC NWI-Es might have the same address on
this interface.
Note: The BSC NWI-E reboots and then performs the diagnostics test.
When the diagnostics test is complete, the BSC NWI-E reboots and
becomes operational again. It is expected to run the diagnostics
test for up to five minutes.
24. When the BSC NWI-E is done with the diagnostics test, log on to the BSC
NWI-E.
show diagnostics
26. Does the printout received in Step 25 show that any diagnostics test failed?
Yes
Go to Step 29.
No
Go to Step 27.

28. Does the printout received in Step 27 show that the current state of the
BSC NWI-E is OPERATIONAL?

Go to Step 29.
Is ExtremeXOS to Be Upgraded?
30. Check the ExtremeXOS revision of the replacement BSC NWI-E with the
command.

Note: See the work order. Both BSC NWI-E in the same BSC should be
running the same ExtremeXOS revision.
Yes
Go to Step 32.
No
Go to Step 43.

35. Download the new version of the SSH module to the non-active partition
image space.

47.
Warning!
Connecting and disconnecting cables without wearing a grounding wrist
strap can damage equipment.
Connect the cables for port 9-10 to the replacement BSC NWI-E.
48. Verify that the Link State has value A for ports 9 and 10 on the replacement
BSC NWI-E.
49. Verify that the connectivity to the other BSC NWI-E is working.
50. Verify that the replacement BSC NWI-E can be accessed from Operation
and Support System (OSS).

to play nice with the interface. Make sure you have a USB-to-serial
adaptor that have been tested and is known to work with BSC NWI-E if
the on-site laptop is using Windows operating system.
