Problem Group 1.

Consider the mechanical system shown in Figure 1. The pendulum with mass m2 is supported by
the car with mass m1, which vibrates because of an elastic connection. Derive the equations of
motion for the system. The displacement “x” is measured from the equilibrium position for t < O.
The angular displacement “θ” is measured from the vertical axis passing through the pivot of the
pendulum. Analize the temporal behaviour x(t) and θ(t), for diferent inicial conditions of “x” and
“θ”, and diferent values of the spring constant “k” (both springs have the same value). Consider
m1=10 Kg, m2=5 Kg and l=1 m. The beam mass is negligible.

Problem Group 2.

Consider the mechanical system shown in Figure 1. Replace one spring by a damper with damping
coeffcient b. Perform the same analysis of problem 1, for diferent values of the constant b.

Problem Group 3.

Consider the double pendulum in Figure 3. Derive the equations of motion for the system for the
two displacement θ1 and θ2, when an input constant torque is applied on the rotation point
regarding θ2. The beam masses are negligible. Analice the temporal behaviour of θ1 and θ2, for
different values of “k” and “a”. Consider m1=2 Kg, m2=5 Kg and l=1 m The beam mass is negligible.

Problem Group 4.

Consider the mechanical system shown in Figure 2. Include one damper, with damping coefficient
“b” between, horizontally placed in a distance a1<a. Perform the same analysis of problem 3,
including different values of “b”, and the distance “a1”.

Problem Group 5.

Consider the pitching motion of an automobile. Figure 3 shows the coupling of the translational and
rotational vibrations. Determine the equations of motion for the system for the two
Figure 3 displacement x and θ. Analize the temporal behaviour for different values of “k1” and
diferent inicial conditions of “x” and “θ” (Remember, there is a nonlinear relation
between “x” and “θ”). Consider m = 2000 kg, l1 = 1 .5 m, l2= 2m, k1 = k2= 4 X 104 N/m, J = 2500 kg-
m2

Problem Group 6.

Consider the mechanical system shown in Figure 3. Include one damper, with damping coefficient
“b” between, placed vertically between the spring with k2 and the center of gravity G. Perform the
same analysis of problem 5, including different values of “b”, and the distance l3<l2.

Problem Group 7.

A boy riding a bike is modeled like a mechanical system in Figure 4. The weight is 800 N, the spring
and damper coefficients are 20000 N/m y 1000 N-s/m. The level of the road can change suddenly in
the point A, in which the velocity of the bike is 5 m/s. Determine the vertical displacement of the
boy once the bike enters in the level in A, during 3 s, assuming the bike is not vibrational mode in
the vertical directtion, before entering in the point A. After 3 s, determine again the vertical
displacement, when the bike enters in the point B. Analice the temporal behaviour for different
values of “c”
