Dean - Panamerican School of Natural Medicine

Malaria, a widespread and potentially lethal infectious disease, has afflicted people for all
of human history. The prevention and treatment of the disease have been investigated in
medicine for hundreds of years, and since the discovery of the parasite by Alphonse
Laveran, research has not stopped. The famous researcher Paul Ehrlich [Erlich's Magic
Bullets] startled the scientific study with methylene blue [MB] as the first synthetic drug
used to treat humans. Ehrlich’s theory as the first use of the term "magic bullet": the concept
that chemicals could be designed to bind to and kill specific microbes or tumor cells. Paul
Ehrlich (1854–1915) is considered a pioneer of such disciplines such as histology,
immunology, oncology and hematology. Since MB was first synthesized in 1876 by Caro,
methylene blue has been used for a variety of medicinal purposes. Currently, methylene
blue is used in human and veterinary medicine for a number of therapeutic and diagnostic
procedures including use as a stain in bacteriology and for colonoscopy.

Much of the emerging works in homeopathy has come out of Europe, relating to the use of
nosodes and various other new preparations - gemnotherapy, oligotherapy, lithotherapy,
and organotherapy - using homeopathic low potencies. It began as the use of Schussler's
tissue salts as micro-dose nutrient therapy. This led the new biotherapies* in France and
Germany where it is best-known form is homotoxicology of the Reckeweg system. They
work more in the way of therapies for regeneration and detoxification at the cellular and
tissue level than specific homeopathics. Tautopathy (Tauto-same), for example, is a method
of curing or removing side effects of drugs by iso-intoxication, i. e., curing by means of the
identical harmful agent in potentised form. Recent Russian research has confirmed this
principle.

Isopathy is methodology that took birth from homeopathy, invented by Johann Joseph
Wilhelm Lux in 1830’s. He was a homeopath along with Hering's school realizing that
potentized toxins were capable of a cure. The core principle of Isopathy is that remedies for
the treatment consist of dilutions that cause a particular disease, especially toxic chemicals
like arsenic, mercury and lead. Isopathy also forms the basis for use of micro-vaccines -
pathogenic samples (nosodes) that are a part of homeopathic practice.

The most definite homœopathic experience of the use of methylene blue in homeopathy is
that of Dr. Halbert utilising the affinity of MB for nerve tissues and nerve cells. Methylene
blue is FDA approved for topical, i.v., and oral administration, and has minimal side effects
in milligram doses, so when given in homeopathic microgram doses, it is absolutely
completely harmless yet yields a wonder cure. Since methylene blue absorbs light in the red
wavelengths, i.e., approximately 670 nm, which penetrates tissue much better than other
wavelengths, light penetrating the skin to the capillaries at the surface can be used to
enhance the activity of the dye. Methylene blue is a photosensitizer, and in conjunction with
light and in the presence of oxygen it can inactivate viruses while you get your daily dose of
Vitamin D. Methylene blue combined with light has been used to treat resistant plaque
psoriasis, cancer, and now we see also reduces facial wrinkles by making the skin more
supple. Interestingly, MB is also used to sanitize fecal contaminated water by exposure to
sunlight. This provides a real clue to micro-dose actions.

Even recently, for example, it has been reported by the famous Bruce Ames, the professor of
molecular and cell biology at UC Berkeley, who fed older rats dietary supplements: acetyl-L-
carnitine and an antioxidant, alpha-lipoic acid which proved increased cell energy, is now
an advocate of methylene blue to prevent aging. "What we potentially have is a wonder
drug." said Dr. Ames. "To find that such a common and inexpensive drug can be used to
increase and prolong the quality of life by treating such serious diseases is truly exciting."
Methylene blue in near homeopathic doses delays cellular senescence and enhances key
mitochondrial biochemical pathways, something sorely needed in today's epidemic of
hypothyroidism type II. The German school added this remedy to their homeopathic
intermediate catalyst therapy, along with the other salts of Kreb's cycle, e.g. acidum citricum,
acid fumaricum, acidum succinum, etc.

The use of synthetic chemicals in the healing arts is not new. Procaine was first synthesized
in 1905 by the German chemist Alfred Einhorn who gave the chemical the trade name
Novocaine. Procaine is the primary ingredient in Gerovital H3 by Ana Aslan (Romania),
which is also claimed like MB, as a remedy to counteract the many effects of aging. The
mainstream medical view discredited H3 in the 1960s but my colleague in St. Marteen, a
Romanian medical doctor, recounts his vast positive experiences while interning with Dr.
Aslan for many months. Neural Therapy, which also uses Procaine, is based on the
observation that trauma can produce long-standing disturbances in the electrochemical
function of tissues. Among the types of tissues affected by trauma include scars, nerve
blocks, dental amalgams, or a cluster of nerve blockss called ganglions, all treated
successfully by injections of Procaine for decades.

The usual allopathic dose of methylene blue is in the milligrams per kilogram of body
weight. Laboratory research shows that micro-doses of MB extend the life span of human
IMR90 fibroblasts in tissue culture by greater than 20 population doublings (PDLs). MB
micro-doses delays senescence in IMR90 by enhancing mitochondrial function. MB
increases mitochondrial complex IV by 30%, enhances cellular oxygen consumption by 37–
70%, increases heme synthesis, and reverses premature senescence caused by H2O2 or
cadmium. Clinical monitoring of microgram doses of methylene blue with objective
measurement methods of skin elasticity, epidermal hydration and skin surface lipids were
used to determine effects of microdose MB treatment. Clinical monitoring includes wrinkle
counts, measurement of wrinkle depth around the right eye, and nasolabial fold depth.
Results demonstrated consistent efficacy of MB treatment in counteracting different signs of
aging in the skin and improving overall energy levels. In other words, a near homeopathic
daily dose of MB is an anti-aging tonic!

It has also been reported that bipolar manic-depressive patients treated with macro-dose
300 mg/day methylene blue for one year were significantly less depressed than when
treated with a 15 mg/day placebo (Naylor, 1986). As another example, methylene blue at
dosages of 65 mg taken three times a day has been reported to be useful in the management
of chronic renal calculous (stone) disease (Smith, 1975). Methylene blue will dissolve
calcium oxalate stones given 65 mg orally 2 to 3 times a day. (Dr. M. J. Vernon Smith: Med.
World News, Dec. 4, 1970)

It has also been reported that methylene blue, injected at a dose of 1 mg/kg of body weight,
improved brain oxidative metabolism and memory retention in rats (Callaway, 2004), and
that senescence-enhanced oxidative stress which is associated with deficiency of
mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase in vascular endothelial cells improved (Xin 2003).

SANITIZING THE REVELATION

The patent office long ago approved this common fish tank disinfectant for approved use
for sanitizing biological fluids contaminated with HIV !. It is also being used by the RED
CROSS for sanitizing HIV contaminated plasma.

So. Doing a little surfing, and since I DO READ, I found this article...

Virostat (Methylene blue)

Virostat, especially when irradiated by light, acts by preventing replication of nucleic acid
(DNA and RNA) in pathogens. Investigator sponsored Phase II clinical trials are ongoing in
Europe and the Middle East to study Virostat's use in treating hepatitis C virus infection and
we announced interim results at the UBS Global Life Sciences Conference in New York on
September 28, 2005. Virostat was given to 25 patients with genotype 4 hepatitis C who had
failed a prior treatment, including interferon in many of the patients. Sixteen (64%) of the
patients had cirrhosis. Virostat was given orally for 100 days and measurement of the viral
load was made at 50 days. At 50 days, 22 (88%) patients had shown a reduction in viral load
of greater than 70%. Of these responders, 14 (64%) had a clearance of greater than 90%,
with four responders having complete viral clearance.

Seven of the 25 patients have had viral load measured at 100 days. Six of these patients
show continued reduction in viral load and the seventh patient, who had been one of the
three non-responders at 50 days, had a greater than 90% reduction in viral load. No major
adverse events were noted.

Further, methylene blue is being looked at as a treatment for West Nile Virus.

Bioenvision, Inc., (BIOV) announced that it has signed a research agreement with Oklahoma
Medical Research Foundation (OMRF) to continue the development of methylene blue for
the treatment of West Nile virus (WNV). Methylene blue is a thiazine dye that combined
with light can inactivate pathogens in the blood. The compound is already in use in parts of
Europe, including Germany and the U.K., where it is used to inactivate viruses in vitro.
Methylene blue is used as an additional screening tool prior to transfusions, and has been
found capable of inactivating HIV in fresh frozen plasma.

Its broad capacity to kill a wide variety of viruses makes methylene blue...

Methylene blue has had many uses in medicine for the last 100 years. The kidneys have a
distinct attraction for Meth.-b., as it appears in the urine within half an hour of the dose;
and if the kidneys have their normal permeability the whole dose is eliminated in about
thirty-six hours. If there is delay beyond this it indicates that the urea is not being perfectly
eliminated and that a tendency to uremia exists. So now we have a wonderful remedy for
the "bush" to check our patients for impending renal failure:

McWilliams' modified Volhard's test

a test for renal function: the patient drinks 1500

ml of water on an empty stomach; if the patient

was not dehydrated beforehand and the kidneys

are normal, this fluid will be excreted by the end

of 4 hr, with specific gravity of the urine being

from 1.001 to 1.004.

Methylene Blue Dilution test: Collect 8 AM urine, measure the specific gravity, discard. Give
1.5 liter of pure water with 60 mg. (six drops of 1% lab grade) with no food nor breakfast.
Collect urine from 8:30 to noon in the wait. Normally the water is voided within 4 hours and
will be green/blue. After 1 1/2 litres of water the specific gravity should fall to less than
1.003.

This a test for renal insufficiency wherein the drinking of a large quantity of water will
cause a proportionate increase in the volume of urine with a decrease in specific gravity if
the kidneys are sound, but not if the epithelium of the secreting tubules are damaged.

MORE ABOUT MB

These aniline products have also been used by homeopaths as remedies for malignant
growths. Recent research suggests that methylene blue, toluidine blue, and other 3,7-
diaminophenothiazinium-based redox cyclers induce selective cancer cell apoptosis.
Combined with plant auxin (indole-3-acetic acid), methylene blue is being investigated for
the photodynamic treatment of cancer. In traditional medicine, it is called PDT (Photo-
Dynamic Therapy). Among photo-dynamic sensitizers are erythrosin, methylene blue,
quinine, some sulfonamides, chlorophyll (fresh vegetable juices), hypericin (st. john's wort),
porphyrins, and others. The plant psoralens are being used in cancer research as they are
now considered as "enerceuticals."

MB is a methyl donor with the ability to cleave carbon monoxide off from hemoglobin.
When the body is poorly oxygenated, the sugar that is burned in oxygen by the cell for
energy burns poorly, producing carbon monoxide, instead of carbon dioxide. I once had a
patient in terminal cancer, and she tripped my Carbon Monoxide breath analyzer, which at
the time puzzled me, as she had not been exposed to automobile traffic. Monoxide has a
great affinity for the iron in hemoglobin, and the hemoglobin is unable to shed it in the
lungs, and so must leave without a fesh supply of oxygen. This can produce the condition
known as methemoglobin anemia. People over the age of fifty almost always have some
methemoglobin in their blood. By taking methylene blue, 5 drops of 1% in a glass of water
before bed, we can eliminate carbon monoxide from our blood in a few short weeks.
Methylene blue is perfectly safe -low dose- and non-toxic. Its only side effect in milligram
dose is to temporarily turn the tongue blue, and to make the urine green. It rarely needs to
be repeated more than once a year for this effect. One of my graduates in London tried this
and thanked me, relieved all his brain fog, it works! So if you live in a congested city, take
your que.

DON'T LIKE THE GREEN URINE ?

There's a cure for MB urine, it's called vitamin C - sodium ascorbate! The soldiers in WWII
disliked the green urine even though it was helping their malaria. So the reason for the
disuse to treat malaria in the pacific wars could have been avoided if the doctors simply
gave the GI's vitamin C when they injected methylene blue. Just add drops of methylene
blue in vitamin C, it will instantly become colorless. Interestingly, methylene blue works
better with vitamin C. Taking MB in allopathic doses will turn your urine green, but if you
take at least 1000 mgs Vitamin C with the MB, these side-effects will not occur. Taking MB in
microdoses is not even a consideration but who in their right, healthful mind would not
take at least 1 gram of C daily?

In Conclusion

A recent paper on the methylene blue conducted by Hani Atamna, PhD, and a his team
published in the March 2008 issue of the Federation of American Societies for Experimental
Biology (FASEB) found that methylene blue can prevent or slow the decline of
mitochondrial function, specifically an important enzyme called complex IV. Because
mitochondria are the principal suppliers of energy to all animal and human cells, this has
all important implications.

Methylene Blue is also known to increase CNS levels of serotonin over two-fold, so extreme
care must be given when administrating this drug in allopathic doses to a patient using an
SSRI, as Serotonin Syndrome could result. We should ask, why not just give depressed
patients not on these drugs a healthy course of micro-dose methylene blue homeopathic,
increase their mitochondria since they are hypothyroid, and make them happy altogether?
What we are talking about is one drop of MD-MB (Micro-Dose Methylene Blue) in their
bottled water, 3 times daily, everyday.
Since researchers have found that methylene blue can protect cells from oxidative stress
and delay cell senescence (aging) at effective concentrations that are orders of magnitude
lower than previously reported milligram therapeutic doses of methylene blue is a boon to
natural therapeutics. Now we come to the homeopathics and what I always say, is never
what it appears to be in terms of what one thinks.

ALL THINGS HOMEOPATHIC

In A DICTIONARY OF PRACTICAL MATERIA MEDICA by John Henry CLARKE, M.D., he states:

"Halbert has given it in 3x trituration with success in: Neuralgias of neurasthenia; tremor in
neurasthenia; spasticity of hysterial contractions; trophic disturbances, the result of nerve-
exhaustion; spinal irritation."

The 3x trituration is what is called a " low attenuation " that is to say, it is not highly
infinitesimal but it is sufficiently low to have lost all taste or smell of crude component. The
largest particles of the 3x trituration do not exceed 1/4000 of an inch in diameter, meaning
they are colloidal. This is equivalent to one drop of water diluted into 50 milliliters (ten
spoonfulls) or, which is approximately a few milligrams of MB per kilogram of solution of
water. Homoeopathic Triturations are used in 250 milligrams to 500 milligrams (half a
gram) at a time per dose whether 1 or 2 tablets are used. Triturations are used in generally
in 3X or 6X potency. So a 3x trituration at a 1/2 gram dose, of which the tablet is 3 parts per
thousand meaning we have reached the microgram doses of Ames.

So in Halbert's day (circa 1920's), Alzheimer which is today the most common form of
dementia, had just been described by German psychiatrist Alois Alzheimer in 1906.
Parkinson's disease, which is a degenerative disorder of the central nervous system was
known. The motor symptoms of Parkinson's disease result from the death of dopamine-
generating cells in the substantia nigra, a region of the midbrain. The cause of this cell
death is unknown. Early in the course of the disease, the most obvious symptoms are
movement-related; these include shaking, rigidity, slowness of movement and difficulty
with walking and gait. Later, cognitive and behavioural problems may arise, with dementia,
like Alzheimer's, commonly occurring in the advanced stages of the disease.

So in examining Halberts use of MB in neurasthenia, his results would be from the anti-
oxidant action newly discovered by Dr's Ames and Atamna. I suspect Halbert had
triturations of MB given for some time, like cell salts are given in low dose, to see these
effects. The German Homeopath Dr. Hans Reckeweg long ago predicted that herbal
dilutions and extracts in these micro-ranges would have metabolic stimulatory effects,
reversing blockages of Kreb's cycle. I have said the same thing about herbal teas. Now I feel
my theory is complete. Never doubt the power of herbal tea! Do not underestimate the
value of homeopathic study.

Alzheimer's disease is characterised by loss of neurons and synapses in the cerebral cortex
and certain subcortical regions. This loss results in gross atrophy of the affected regions,
including degeneration in the temporal lobe and parietal lobe, and parts of the frontal
cortex and cingulate gyrus. Parkinson's disease result from the death of dopamine-
generating cells in the substantia nigra. The cause is unknown in both diseases, but it
advances with mitochondrial shut down in the early stages.
As one of my homeopathic teachers once told me, "I don't have problems with the potenices
in the highs or lows, just understand how they work!" If the efficacy of MB at this dosage
were to hold true, a 1 fluid ounce bottle of MB at 2% would provide sufficient MB at the
concentration we are discussing for 3 doses taken daily for 5 years. The cost for that 1 fluid
ounce (2 %) of MB sold as a guppy cure is just $5. A medical prescription of MB, the same
quantity costs $30. Either way, MB would be an extremely cheap treatment for dementia,
parkinson's, tremor, nerve exhaustion, or just increasing one's longevity. Frankly, as a long
skilled homeopathic physician, it is totally astounding that such a relatively simple and
inexpensive chemical that has such a profound effect on human physiology, could be
overlooked when it was recorded in Boericke's and Clarke's Materia Medica's in the 1920's.
For conventional medicine to have ignored homeopathy as a group of ignorant pharmacists,
and focus solely on Hahnemann's 'like cures like' as the sole basis of homeopathic
treatment, we can see it was clearly a mistake, if not an injustice to a system that had
enjoyed more popularity than its opposite at the turn of the 20th century. The homeopaths
were clearly way ahead in intellectual and empirical advancement.

A popular verse went: 'Doctor comes with free good will, but ne'er forgets his calomel.'
Ordinary people often feared and scorned regular doctors for their brutal methods and
shaky education, and because their "cures" killed more people than the diseases.

THAT QUACKING SOUND IN COLONIAL AMERICA. CW JOURNAL:SPRING 04.

Now you may wonder, what lies ahead, if methylene blue is only one of another 623
remedies listed in Boericke's Materia Medica ? I have said it before, and I'll never stop
saying it, there is GOLD in that book, and it is unfortunate so few know how to read it. Long
has been abandoned (until recently) such remedies as Kali iodatum (potassium iodide),
Magnesia muriatica (Delbet's solution), Aqua marina (Sea Water), Lithium carbonicum,
Phaseolus nana, and the list could go on and on...
