Creating Gap Convection and Radiation

‰ Gap Radiation and Fixed Coefficient convection LBC’s are used to facilitate Thermal Coupling across narrow gaps

‰ Radiation

ƒ Create using "Gap Radiation" option

ƒ was "Between Regions" in version 7.6 and previous

ƒ User must input a known view factor

ƒ View Factor code not run for Gap Radiation LBC

ƒ Data is written to gap_rad.dat file

‰ Convection

ƒ Create using "Fixed Coefficient" option

ƒ was "Between Regions" in Version 7.6 and previous

ƒ Not used for Time or Temperature varying convection

ƒ Data is written to gap_convec.dat

‰ Gap LBC Data is not written to the Neutral file

"Between Regions" Application Region

There are two application regions

‰ Areas are computed from entities in Application Region

‰ Application regions must both be either Geometry or FEM

ƒ Cannot mix Application Region and Region 2 entity types

‰ Order:

ƒ Selection

ƒ Many-to-one or one-to-one nodal correspondence

ƒ Closest Approach (default)

ƒ Many-to-many nodal correspondence

ƒ Most useful option

‰ Cannot include the same node or element in both regions

ƒ Usually an unintentional picking error

ƒ Analysis breaks down writing gap_convec.dat file

“Between Regions” Input Data

‰ Convection between regions
ƒ Uses constant convection coefficient values
ƒ Use Convection Hex/Wedges for variable convection
coefficient until MSC.Patran version 8
‰ Radiation between regions
ƒ Provide surface emissivity of each of the two regions
ƒ Form factor = View factor
ƒ Assessed or computed by user
ƒ Bypasses Radiation Interchange calculation
ƒ No viewfactor calculations performed
