Part A – Career Interest

Introduction

The purpose of this report is to clarify my work values, education, experience and knowledge that
is linked to a job that is appropriate for me. This report will mention what the interviewee
answered about the nature of job, skills, values, personality, qualifications and experience
required. Also, it will give analysis about the industry of the job. Moreover, it will include a
conclusion which will simplify if I am still interested in the job or not.

Interview

To begin with, I had conducted an interview with a person who is working in State Bank of India
(SBI) and his job is a teller. This person name is Hussain Ahmed. SBI is an Indian government
international bank and it is a public sector and provides financial services. He is working in SBI
since June 2012 until now. I have met with him in Costa Coffee in the morning time. The
questions that have been asked was about the nature of his job, skills, values, personality,
experience and qualifications required, challenges faced in this job and little a bit about
applicants in their bank.

Firstly, Mr. Hussain described the nature job as a teller, as it needs to deal with the customers
directly and he should satisfy what they want by depositing or withdrawing money from or to
their account. The money that is deposited or withdrew, it could be either cash or cheque. Also,
he said to serve the customer want he might get asked to transfer money to someone else
account either in the same bank or other bank as in Bahrain. Moreover, he would fill up the ATM
of the branch when it is required. At the end of duty time, he would start counting his money to
do the closing process and check that there is no short in his counter. Last thing is to finalize all
the reports and registers of the day.

Secondly, Mr. Hussain explained the main skills that require for the job to be accurate and focus
in the work, because as the person is dealing with money then it requires to keep full attention.
For example, when the time comes to give a customer cash as wanted, you should make sure
how much exactly you are giving and at the same time what is recorded in the system; by
deducting from the customer account. Therefore, if you did not take care about that then the
teller is the one who will pay it from his pocket. Also, Mr. Hussain mentioned another two major
skills required as a teller, is to have IT skills and to be familiar mathematically. The IT skill is
required because in their bank, they are using computers developed with a system named
(FINACLE) for the bank process. For instance, this system that used in the bank is likely similar as
excel so if the employee does not have basic IT skills then it is not possible to work as a teller.
Whereas, for the mathematical skills, since the teller is dealing with large amount of money. Mr
Hussain provide an example, is that when a customer wants to withdraw then the teller should
make sure that if the client account has enough balance to do the transaction. So, the teller
should be very familiar and fast with counting, adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing; in
order not to do any mistake easily.

Thirdly, Mr. Hussain expressed the values to have excellent relations with everyone for this job;
should work friendly such as the teller would like to do things for other people. As Mr. Hussain
mentioned that the teller should be friendly with everyone and be calm and not annoyed from
any customer who have bad attitude. As Mr. Hussain described the personality of teller that
should be self-confident. For example, he said while doing any transaction you should be fast
with a confident of what I am entering and not be always in doubtful of what is done.

Finally, to work as a teller in a bank, Mr. Hussain said that I need to have at least two years’
experience in financial services such as cashier in finance company that do transfer or exchange
money. Because he got this job from his experience in Bahrain Financial Company. Also, he said
I need to have a good knowledge on how the system of transactions or transfers work so by that
I need to get an experience for that. As Mr. Hussain stated that the qualification required is the
Bachelor of Banking and Finance or even a diploma certificate the links to the banking and
finance. According to Mr. Hussain, he recommended for me to get a cashier job in any of the
financial companies that are available in Bahrain. So, in this job I would gain experience that will
benefit me and help to get a job in a bank. He had described that the financial companies are
same as school that would benefit me to get a good knowledge and experience financially. Mr.
Hussain stated that there are plans that SBI are looking forward to expanding and provide more
branches where they would start to recruit the applicants required. Lastly, Mr. Hussain thinks
that the job demand for a teller is similar with the other banks.

Independent Research

According to Aurelio Locsin, the bank teller are the ones who holds the withdrawal, deposits and
other financial transactions with the customer. The duties and responsibilities that they would
take, count and handout cash, after entering the information required into the computer from
the answers that had been investigated for the service. They must make sure about the opening
and closing balance of the cash drawer in workdays, because they should uphold the
responsibility of the money that goes in and out of their drawers. By that they should confirm
the customer information by their government-issued identity cards or any other government
document. The qualification needed at least high school diploma, but the applicant should prove
that has basic mathematical skills and perfect awareness of customer service (Doyle, 2018). That
means the future of banking industry is impossible to fall because it is one of the most important
in the economy of Bahrain. But according to the Bureau of Labour Statistics, it is stated that the
job opportunity of bank tellers is probable to minimise by 8% from 2016 to 2026 because of the
increasement of automation and online or mobile banking (Doyle, 2018).
Part B – People Interest

Analysis

Based on the interview and the available research, the future of the job as a teller is compulsory
needed in any bank. But there is chance to decline as mentioned previously. Although, the bank
needs personal touches where they cannot dispense with tellers in a branch. The bank is required
in any region that have a good economy; where the bank would benefit easily from the interests
taken from loans. Most of the businesses that start-up or in process, needs to take loan between
time to time. As technological, currently the banks are developing fast with the automation,
internet and mobile banking. For example, the latest system that is developed in banking is
FAWRI+ where an individual can transfer money from his own account to the other by online
banking. As a result, banking industry is a strong industry which it is important in all regions.

Reflection

In conclusion, there are some advantages and disadvantages if I am going to work in a bank. The
advantages that I will gain from working in a bank are getting great benefits that are added to my
salary such as transport allowance, key-holding allowance, lunch allowance and other allowance
that are being paid by the bank. Also, I will develop the important skills that is valuable in many
of the other occupations such as math skills and accuracy skill which it is needed in most of the
organizations. Moreover, having experience in bank sounds great in my resume because this job
originates with great responsibilities that another employer like to see. Whereas, the
disadvantages that I would face is when a customer have a distress on his account that would be
ordered from the central bank, then the customer might get angry and shout because of the bad
news. So, here I should be kind and let him to calm down because it is not the bank problem.
Another disadvantage that I might face if I did any mistake in the counting of the money or wrong
record then I am the one who should pay it; as it known working in a bank means working with a
large amount of money. Even though, I have a confident if I did this job, I would not do any
mistake that might affect me financially. Another issue that I might face, at this time I am studying
accounting to get the Bachelor of Accounting and it might not link to the requirements of the job
in Bahrain. Among all that I am currently still interested to work in this job because I like to work
with numbers and money; since I like this job, I will success in it.
