3 Prerequisites
A grade of C- or better in M 408C, M 408S, M 408L or the equivalent. M 408D may not be counted
by students with credit for both of M 408S and M 408M, nor for students with credit for both of M
408L and M 408M. The two courses M 408C and M 408D are required for mathematics majors, and

mathematics majors are required to make grades of C- or better in these courses. (Majors may also
complete the equivalent sequences M 408N/S/M; or M 408K/L/M, with grades of C- or better.)
4 Grading
Your grade will be determined by homework, two quizzes, two midterm exams, and a final exam.
Assignment Date Value
1. Homework weekly assignments, due Wednesdays 15%
2. Quiz 1 September 21 8%
3. Midterm Exam I October 8 17%
4. Quiz 2 October 26 8%
5. Mideterm Exam 2 November 19 17%
6. Final Exam December 15, 9am-noon 35%
Final grades will be assigned on the usual scale: 90-100 is an A or A-; 80-90 is a B+ or B or B-; 70-80
is a C+ or C or C-; 60-70 is a D; and below 60 is an F. At the discretion of the instructor, course grades
might be curved upward at the end of the semester, depending on the performance of the class and
difficulty of the exams. The instructor will not assign letter grades to individual assignments or exams.
5 Homework
Homework assignments will be completed online using the Quest system. Quest enables you to get
constant feedback on how well you are understanding the material. Quest costs $30 for one course or
$60 for two or more courses. You are required to sign up for and use Quest as part of this course. To
register for Quest, go to: https://quest.cns.utexas.edu/.
The homework must be completed online by the date posted, typically about one week after it becomes
available. You will accumulate points during the semester, and your "Homework score" will be your
average score as reported by Quest. Note that Quest will subtract points for wrong answers, so think
carefully before you answer or you could end up with a negative score! The solutions to each homework
assignment will be available on Quest shortly (minutes) after the assignment is due. Late homework
will not be accepted under any circumstance. However, your two lowest homework grades will be
dropped.
Collaboration
You are encouraged to study the material with your classmates. You may work on the homework
assignments with classmates. However, you must enter your solutions yourself. It is considered cheating
by both parties if a person other than you enters homework answers on your quest account.
6 Exams
Two quizzes and two midterm exams will be given throughout the semester. The quizzes will be held
in discussion section. The midterm exams will be held during lecture time, but possibly at a different
location, to be announced during class and on the course Quest page. The final exam is worth 33% of
your final grade. The final will be scheduled by the registrar’s office about four weeks before the end of
the semester. Exams will likely consist of both multiple choice (similar in style to the Quest problems)
and free response questions, although the proportion is still to be determined. Quizzes will be short
and consist of several free response questions.

7 Other Policies
7.1 Make-up policy
There are no make-ups for homework for ANY reason. Your two lowest homework grades will be
dropped. If you have a valid reason (medical or family emergency, or any other university approved
excuse) for missing an exam, then I will give you an alternative exam, preferably before the scheduled
exam. Missing an exam without a valid reason will result in a score of zero for that exam. To schedule
a makeup must notify me (acknowledged email or written) prior to date of absence if such notification
is feasible. Except in the case of a university approved excuse, you must take the final exam at the
scheduled time. Even if you really really want to go on vacation early.
8 Tentative Schedule
Warning: This schedule will most likely change. Changes will be announced in class and on Quest.
You are responsible for knowing about all announcements made in class, even if you are absent that
day.
