Post Instructional Plan

After reflecting on my instructional plan, I have come to the conclusion that a majority of the
students fall within the ‘Meeting Standard’ category. Looking at the assessment data, there is a
clear shift from ‘Approaching Standard’ to ‘Meeting Standard’ along with a shift from ‘Meeting
Standard’ to ‘Exceeding Standard’. This shows that students are understanding the material at
grade level and have demonstrated success on the correlating assessments. However, this
instructional plan was just a small fraction of the narrative writing unit. This lesson on descriptive
paragraphs was the second writing mini-unit the students have had instruction on. Still focusing
on adding detail to writing, the next mini-unit focuses on dialogue. I believe that the students
have showed enough understanding of sensory detail to move onto dialogue. All of these
lessons within the unit are pushing students to organize their ideas in a clear way and to paint a
picture for the reader through their strong verbs and adjectives. It will be easy to make
connections to future lessons for students, since all are related to adding detail and expressing
emotion and essentially building on one another. I hope that throughout the course of this unit,
students will continue to have opportunities to plan, draft, and revise short pieces of writing. At
the end of the unit, the culminating assessment will be a narrative essay to assess student
learning.
