 Description and Teacher/Trainer Directions

Prior to this session, students will review the PowerPoint presentation on Air
Masses and Fronts or view the instructor created videos on the same topics
(or they may choose to do both). Students will have the opportunity to ask
questions as needed.

1. Answer any questions related to the information students reviewed on

air masses and fronts.
2. Distribute (or have students access the electronic copy of) the
Weather Map Challenge Performance Task.
3. Explain that the purpose of the task is to allow students to use their
knowledge of air masses and fronts to “be” a weather forecaster.
They may get as creative with the task as they like, but all predictions
must be supported by evidence from the weather map (no silly
forecasts) and must accurately correlate to the air masses and fronts.
4. Allow students to read through the steps in the performance task or
read through the steps with them.
5. Clarify as needed to answer any questions.

6. Remind students that they may choose to utilize Google Docs, Slides,
and potentially a screen recorder to complete this task. Show
examples of what each type of product might look like at completion.

Teacher Comments: I enjoyed reviewing your performance task. You
seem to understand the weather events that accompany the cold front.
Good job overall! 

 Materials and Equipment

 Chromebooks with internet access
 Student access to Blackboard and Google Drive
 Air Masses and Fronts PowerPoint presentation and/or video
links
 Weather Map Challenge Instructions and Rubric
 Weather Map Challenge Examples
 What 21st Century Technology was used in this performance
task?
 Students utilize school issued Chromebooks to complete the
instruction and assessment for this task.
 The materials are provided through Blackboard (the school
provided Learning Management System).
 Students will use their Google Drive to create, save, and share
their performance tasks with each other and the teacher.
 Differentiated Instruction
 Students are given options to present the information based on
their preferences. Students who enjoy writing may choose to
write their forecast in paragraph or dialogue format in a Google
Doc. Students who prefer less writing may choose to use a
Google Slides presentation and present the information
graphically as a forecast that one might see on the TV news.
Students who enjoy performing may choose to create a video
and narrate their graphics instead of writing the information on a
Doc or Slides.
 The instruction prior to the assessment is presented in a variety
of formats as well (written, PowerPoint presentation, and video),
so that students may choose a learning format that they prefer.
 Web Resources
 For instruction:
 PowerPoint presentation
 Screencast Videos
 For assessment:
 weather.com
 Google Drive (Docs or Slides)
 Screen recorder as necessary(Google extension or screen
recording websites as approved by instructor and parent)
 Setting
 The instruction is taking place in a summer school, blended
learning setting. Students may participate in instruction both in
the classroom and at home. The classroom setting is at
Whitewater Middle School in a 7th grade classroom.
 All resources for the lesson (both instruction and assessment)
may be accessed from any electronic device, but students are
encouraged to use school issued Chromebooks.
 Learners
 All of the learners participating in this lesson are students who
did not pass 6th grade science during the 2017-18 school year.
 The learners are 11-12 years old.
 3 are male and 1 is female
 2 are white and 2 are African-American students
 1 student has an IEP for Emotional Behavior Disorder; the
remaining 3 students are general education students.
 All speak English as a first language.
 3 students are participating in summer school to be eligible to
play sports next year; 1 is participating to be promoted.
 All are proficient in the use of technology necessary to complete
the instruction and assessment.

Weather Map Challenge Performance Task

Purpose: To demonstrate your knowledge of air masses and fronts by

predicting the weather based on an authentic weather map.

Directions:

1. Decide whether you would like to present your weather forecast as a

Google Doc containing your weather map and forecast (in paragraph
format), as a Google Slides Presentation containing your weather map
and forecast (in a graphic format), or as a video containing your
weather map and forecast (with both audio and visuals).
2. Create your Google Doc or Google Slides presentation.
3. Name it … Your Last Name. Your First Name. Weather Map Challenge.
(Example below!)

4. If you choose to work with a partner, be sure to include both partners’

names in the name of your file. (For example:
Grandea.Nickey.Smith.Donna.Weather Map Challenge)
5. Share your file with your teacher (and your partner).
6. Find a weather map, copy it, and paste it into your file.
a. Go to weather.com.
b. Click on Menu in the upper right corner.

c. Choose “Classic Weather Maps” under Maps.

d. Place your arrow on the map, right click, and click copy.
e. Paste the weather map in your document or presentation.

7. Choose a specific state in the US for your forecast. Be sure to tell me

which state you’ve chose in your doc or slides.
8. Describe the current conditions in that location based on the front(s)
located in that area. Include the type of front, air masses associated
with that front, temperatures, humidity level, and precipitation.
9. Describe the weather you predict will occur in that state for the next 3
days. Include the type of front, air masses associated with that front,
temperatures, humidity level, and precipitation.

* Creativity is encouraged, but you must make accurate predictions

based on the fronts and air masses on the map.

** Use the rubric to evaluate your work before you submit it!
