Selection of Current transformers Certifiedbased on

shortthrough Knowledge
circuit
study report
 CTs provided for protection have to transform fault current
in liner proportion with minimum errors for satisfactory
functioning of protection relay connected to the CT
 For CTs provided for protection following parameters are
required to be selected
 Accuracy limit factor (ALF)
 Ratio error at current corresponding to ALF
 ALF shall cover as much as the fault current as possible
 The ratio error shall be as low as possible
 For selection of ALF the fault current is obtained from the
short circuit study
 ALF= Fault current/ primary current of CT

MRSS board Empowering through Knowledge

 CT ratio= 1600/1 Amp

 Fault current= 13340 A

 Ratio of fault current to CT primary current= 13340/1600=8.3375

 Hence ALF should be more than 8.3375

 Accordingly ALF of 10 can be selected

 Protection CT selected is 5P10

 For Outgoing Motor of rating 3150 KW on 11 KV board

 Full load current of motor= 216 A

 CT ratio= 250/1 Amp

 Fault current= 20,710 – 1300 = 19,410 Amp.

 Ratio of fault current to CT primary current= 19,410/250= 77.6

 Hence ALF should be more than 74.6

 But CTs can be manufactured up to maximum ALF of 20

 Hence ALF selected is 20

From the consideration of capability to carry fault current
the cable shall be selected as follows:
 Outgoing motor feeders- to withstand fault current for 20
Milliseconds
 Outgoing transformer feeders- to withstand fault current for
600 Milliseconds
 Incoming feeders to the board - to withstand fault current for
1.0 second
Example
 For Outgoing Motor of rating 3150 KW on 11 KV board
 Full load current of motor= 216 A

 Considering:
 Derating factor for ambient temperature of 50 Degree-
0.9
 Derating factor for laying in groups Degree- 0.9
 Overall Derating factor = 0.7
 Hence the cable shall be suitable of carrying
continuously current= 216/0.7 = 308 amp
 Referring to cable catalogue, 3c 50 mm2 XLPE
insulated cable has continuous current rating of 360 A
 Hence 3c 50 mm2 cable appears to be suitable
 However, as per cable catalogue, 3c 50 mm2 cable has
capability to withstand Amp. for 1 second
